The Futures Project In youth categories from U14, the body of the players can differ enormously. Late mature players often drop off in the youth categories because of a difference in weight, height and development of the body in general. But late mature players are sometimes more talented than early mature players and have a bigger margin in case of progression. So how can we avoid losing them in our talent development system? The situation of the late mature Dries Mertens more than fifteen years ago was an inspiration. He was very skillful in the youth categories and part of the Belgian FA topsportschool project from 14 to 18 years, but it was so difficult for him to perform against early mature opponents. He struggled in the youth categories and he was about to become one of the talents lost due to his late maturity. And he was far from being the only one… A huge signal for the Belgian FA to come up with a new project: the Future national teams, founded in 2008. So next to the traditional youth national teams between Under-15 and Under-21, we started organizing activities for Under-15, Under-16 and Under-17 Future teams. Bob Browaeys (Senior Manager Youth Education and Head Coach National Team U17): “Our talent identification model is based on five criteria: winning mindset , explosivity, game intelligence, body & ball control and learning ability. But you can only assess the first four qualities correctly if players compete against opponents of the same maturity level.” “The first generation we really worked with regarding maturity was the 1993 generation in 2009. Yannick Carrasco was amongst the players then. And we do not only apply the Futures idea in our national teams, we also use it in the topsportschools and the regional selections”, explains Bob Browaeys, who recently qualified our Under-17’s for the Euro 2019 in Ireland. David Penneman (Coordinator Future Teams Belgium and Assistant Youth Coach National Team U16/U17): “Next to Futures, we also have the new BeGold teams. A project supported by the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee, the National Lottery and the Flemish, Walloon and the German-speaking Communities.” “The projects brought us two extra national teams: BeGold Under 16/17 and U18/U19. The two teams consist of highly talented players. This project gives us the possibility to create a more individual follow up pathway for those players. Not only within one year but during several years. From Under-15 until the Under-21 Olympic team.” In the meantime, countries such as Czech Republic, Denmark, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden joined us and have also launched similar projects. We are happy to have the U16F teams of Czech Republic, Denmark, and Sweden with us this week and are sure we will have a fantastic four nations tournament the upcoming days where we will see a lot of talented players who will make it in the future. In the middle of the tournament week the Belgian FA organizes an international conference to share stories and ways of working between the different countries. During the different sessions, we also focus on the relative age effect and biological maturity in a scientific and medical approach and how we can support late mature talents mentally. Enjoy the games! 3
