Greetings from Student Life! UIU SUMMER UPDATE July 2018 Classes begin on Monday, August 27 Traditional Housing Apartment Housing Suite-Style Housing Housing Application - Have You Completed Yours? Need to confirm your housing for the 2018-19 academic year? Please complete the Housing Application at your earliest convenience. Please note: you must be logged in to myUIU to view this form. Planning to Commute to Campus? All students are required to live in University residence halls and maintain a meal plan during their first three years at UIU. All requests to live off-campus are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Requests are rarely granted. Students who fail to take up residency or move off campus without permission, will be charged a $3,000 penalty fee per year for the duration of the residency and will be required to enroll, at a minimum, in the 80-Meal Commuter Meal Plan every year for the duration of the residency requirement. If you are interested in commuting to campus, please complete the Off-Campus/Commuter Request Form. Once the form is submitted, your request is reviewed and you’ll be contacted with a decision. Contact studentlife@uiu.edu Payment Due Date Reminder All Fall Semester charges, including tuition, room and board, books and additional fees, are due and payable by Noon on Wednesday, August 22, 2018. Default in payment results in the student’s enrollment being dropped, delayed or denied; satisfactory arrangements must be made with the Business Office before reinstatement. NEWS FROM INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Some big changes are coming to International Student Services for Fall 2018! All of these changes are meant to improve the ease of accessing services and improve the overall international student experience at UIU. Questions or comments are welcome regarding any of these changes as well as further suggestions towards how ISSS can continue to improve. New International Student Association (ISA) Board ISSS is pleased to announce the new ISA board for the 2018-19 academic year. President Andre Cheong Vice President Barbara Lim Secretary Kailie Sasada Treasurer Zheng Bo Liew Event Coordinator Jie Jun Teng SGA Representative Jeremy Chan The board plans to arrive early in August to get a head start on planning for the upcoming year. They are actively looking for new members to join the organization. Any students, American or international, interested in ISA are encouraged to reach out to any ISA member to get more information or to join a meeting. ISA can also be reached at isa.peacocks@gmail.com. New Education Abroad Coordinator Please welcome Lacey Hawke as the new Education Abroad Coordinator. She comes to Upper Iowa University from Shanghai Normal University Tianhua College where she taught English and American culture. She has also worked in the study abroad office at Western Oregon University and studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea for 1 year. Lacey is excited to begin this new position and work with the UIU students and faculty to promote and facilitate study abroad opportunities. Lacey officially begins as the Education Abroad Coordinator on August 6. New Faculty Led Programs for 2018-19 We are working with faculty on creating some great programs for the upcoming academic year. All of the programs are getting finalized over the summer so students can be begin signing up in September. We expect to have programs going to Peru, Italy, and Greece. Spring 2019 Study Abroad Deadlines Any students interested in studying abroad for the Spring 2019 semester should be researching their options and planning ahead for the application now. ISEP’s deadline is September 1 and many other organizations and schools have an application deadline that isn’t long after September 1. We are available to assist students all summer, so please email us if you are thinking about the opportunity! Student Emergency Funding Grant UIU has been awarded grant funding from the Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation & Affiliates to assist qualifying Fayette campus students with emergency funding. This is a one-time grant from up to $1000 and can be used for expenses such as medical, dental, transportation, childcare, housing, utilities, and food. Last year, UIU awarded 44 students with this grant funding and look forward to being able to help additional students with grant funding to stay enrolled in college this upcoming year.
