ISSUE 4 | DECEMBER 2020 TULIP TALKS THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR PARKINSON'S HAWKE'S BAY A Word From Your Community Engagement Advisor LEANNE HAVILL Kia Ora Central Region! What an interesting quarter we've experienced, with the ups and downs of COVID-19, the shifting of levels, the ceasing, and then the recommencing of activities! I am pleased to say that the 2020 Tulip Cream Tea campaign has been an enormous success despite the uncertain times. There have been over 100 events across the country. The community spirit, generosity, and incredible stories that have come out of this year's campaign have blown the team at Parkinson's New Zealand out of the water. The Tulip Cream Tea campaign is now an annual activity, and we thank everyone who has been involved. We are pleased to showcase some of the events and look forward to an even bigger campaign in 2021. Below we have shared Linley's story as this is typical of those who are reconnecting with Parkinson's through the Tulip Cream Tea campaign - keeping the memories of loved ones alive and doing their bit to help in a fun way. Take care all. Leanne Havill CEA – Central Region leanne.havill@parkinsons.org.nz (027 383 1155) A Word From Your Parkinson's Nurse JOCELYN PACK Kia Ora Hawke's Bay, I hope you have been enjoying the spring weather and watching your gardens bloom. It is a lovely time of year and heart-warming to see after the weeks we have spent at home this year. Several of you have been in hospital recently, and I wanted to request that you give me a call if the person with Parkinson's in your home is admitted. I don't receive notifications from the DHB, so it would be helpful if you could share this information. I can then check that you have all the support in place when you are discharged. That will stop those quizzical looks I get when some of you say, "Well, you know that Bob has been in hospital" when in fact, no, I don't know! Many thanks for your help on that front; it would be appreciated. Onward to summer now. Please remember to increase your fluids, especially on those hot days. This will assist anyone bothered by constipation. Any fluids are good – jellies, ice cream, yoghurt, tea, coffee, cold drinks. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated, so make stopping for a drink a routine part of the day every couple of hours and have a drink with every meal. And yes, that glass of wine is ok too! Catch you at the Christmas party. Take care, folks. Jocelyn Pack Hawke's Bay Parkinson's Nurse Tulip Cream Tea at Keirunga Gardens The Parkinson's New Zealand Action Group in Hawke's Bay hosted its inaugural regional Tulip Cream Tea at Keirunga Gardens. Hosted in a beautiful setting, with everyone enjoying the outdoors and fantastic home baking, a selection of Dilmah teas and coffee with Lewis Road Creamery milk and cream. They were entertained by the beautiful acoustic sounds of Liam Farris, and thanks to New World, the hamper raffle was a hit! Special thanks go out to the incredibly talented local apron and mask sewers who contributed. All efforts combined made for a joyous and relaxed afternoon in the sun, all the while raising over $700 for people with Parkinson's in the Hawke's Bay region. Thank you all involved!
A Word From Your Action Group Chair JUDY CLARKE Hello everyone, and welcome to Spring! We have been celebrating this wonderful season with loads of Tulip Cream Teas. I would just like to thank everyone who has taken the time to host one of these events or anyone who has attended one. Apart from being a wonderful treat - it has undoubtedly helped us financially and lift the profile of Parkinson’s HB. Another huge thank you - in advance - to everyone who has volunteered to spend time helping with our Annual Street Appeal. By the time you read this, we will hopefully have had another successful appeal. We are now fast approaching the end of the year. This means our Christmas lunch will be organised for Tuesday, 1st December at 12 pm. I am looking forward to seeing you there. Don’t forget to let Sarah know you’d like to go! On that note, I’d like to thank everyone for all their support over this very different year we have had. Let’s hope the next one will be better! A Family's Journey with Parkinson's (and inspiration to host a Tulip Cream Tea!) This November, Linley Steel hosted a Tulip Cream Tea in memory of her father, Noel Colman, to raise awareness of her family's experiences, over a 34-year journey with Parkinson's. Noel Colman was only 48 years old when he was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's. Mavis, Noel's wife, and Linley's mother say the whole family needed to adapt to cope with the challenges Parkinson's causes. For Mavis, the support her family received from Parkinson's New Zealand was a "godsend." Only nine at the time of her dad's diagnosis, it wasn't until Linley became a nurse and a mother that she had a clearer understanding of the impact Parkinson's was having on her dad, both physically and mentally, inspiring her to host this Tulip Cream Tea and fundraise for us!
