A Word From Your Educator Jane Flowerday, Wairarapa Happy New Year one and all. All the festivities are over, the longest day of the year has passed, the children are back to school and 2019 is really in full swing again! I had an awesome break doing nothing and that included doing absolutely everything I felt like and wanted to do! I had no trips to make or banquets to host so I now feel rejuvenated and ready to support you and help you navigate your way around the health and disability system. We had an exciting and important fundraising event, Pedal for Parkinson’s, held on Sunday, 17 February, in a rural setting out on the beautiful Wairarapa coast. The planning for this and the number of volunteers donating their time was phenomenal. All the proceeds are to remain here to help safeguard our service here in the Wairarapa for our Parkinson’s Community. Brian Lambert ready for We have just had a lovely session in Greytown at the Wairarapa hydrotherapy Workingman’s club with Rachel Horwell, the Dance for Parkinson’s specialist with a taster class called “DaNZability. This was a fun packed hour of movement to music, both seated and standing depending on ability. Rachel took us through some great routines to catchy tunes familiar to us all and was enjoyed immensely by the 20 or so people who participated. It is our plan to hold this event monthly in Greytown to begin with and see what the interest is. We are currently aiming on doing this on a Monday, at 1:30 pm. I would appreciate hearing from you with expressions of interest. Spread the word! Parkinson’s Wairarapa ran their Inaugural “Hydrotherapy class” Trevor Andrew enjoying on Tuesday, 5 February, for a period of 8 weeks at 10:45am for a 30 dance minutes session. Held at a private heated pool and facilitated by a well-qualified swimming instructor. The class commenced with basic water skills to gain confidence in the water. These are small classes of six people, so we are planning Group at DaNZability with to hold two sessions with the current registrations. We hope this will Rachel Horwell become an ongoing activity throughout the year if enough people are interested. My initiative in organising the hydrotherapy was that I recognised some of our members have considerable musculoskeletal problems, including arthritis and some postural difficulties wherepeople are unable to achieve aerobic exercise through walking. Therefore the well-known benefits of hydrotherapy, and minimising weight bearing effects on the body can be most beneficial and additionally, improve balance.
