Winter 2013 Reno.gov City Receives Grant for SCI Fitness Program Project Fit Reno, sponsored by the Neilsen Foundation, provides weekly fitness classes and an all inclusive facility membership pass to promote a continuum of service, transitioning individuals living with Spinal Cord Injury from the hospital to their home communities to continue to work on their home rehabilitation program and personal fitness goals. Classes will be taught by a Renown Rehabilitation Hospital Physical Therapist and City of Reno fitness instructor. Individuals living with spinal cord injury will be required to participate in a minimum of 4 structured classes. The class facilitator will cover the following topics throughout the duration of the program: orientation to equipment, assess fitness level, teach proper technique to develop strength, endurance and flexibility, and discuss fitness goals. After the minimum required fitness classes are completed, participants will be eligible for a FREE all inclusive facility membership good for one year. Classes start this January! SPORTS Sierra Challenge Athletic Association The Sierra Challenge Athletic Association (SCAA) was founded in 1991 to improve recreation oppor- tunities for people with physical disabilities in the Reno/Tahoe area. SCAA is a private not-for-profit 501(c) 3 organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for indi- viduals with physical disabilities by boosting self-confidence through adaptive sports and recreation activities such as wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Sierra Storm Hosts Wheelchair Rugby Tournament The Sierra Challenge Athletic Association in cooperation with the City of Reno Adaptive Recreation Program hosted their annual wheelchair rugby tournament October 25th – Oc- tober 27th at the Plumas Gymnasium. Teams from the United States Quad Rugby Association (USQRA) joined the Sierra Storm in a fun filled and competitive weekend of wheelchair rugby. Wheelchair Rugby Wheelchair or Quad Rugby is a fast paced and competitive sport for individuals with physical disabilities that affect all four extremities. Players use special “Rugby Wheelchairs” to play the sport. These chairs are very maneuverable and can take a hit or two. Rugby players must be able to push their own wheelchairs. SPORTS Boccia The object of the game is to throw or roll game balls so that they land as close as possible to a tar- get ball called the “Jack.” Come see how close you can get. For informa- tion call April Wolfe at 775-333-7765 to register call 775-334-2262 Tuesdays January 28 – March 4 11am – 12pm Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center Fee: 4 Rink on the River Sledges are available for use on the outdoor rink for persons with physical disabilities to enjoy the great winter time experience of ice skating in a seated sled/skate. Sledges are provided through a donation from the State of Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Regular admission fees apply at the rink but the sledges are available free of charge. Adaptive Equipment Rental Program What do you do when you want to play but don’t have the toys? YOU RENT! Our adaptive recreation equipment is available to rent (sport wheelchairs, roller sleds, handcycles, etc.). Renting makes it affordable for participants to try before they buy, be a weekend warrior, gain skills, and be involved in more than one sport. Disabled Sports USA Far West Adaptive Snowsports Instruction Starting November 1st we will be taking reservations for adaptive snowsports instruction at our Program Center at Alpine Meadows Resort. A private 2½ hour lesson with lift ticket is only $85 with an annual Disabled Sports mem- bership fee of $30. Our tentative opening day is December 13, 2013, and we will be open every day except Christmas until April 19, 2014. Lessons are open to anyone with any disability. The only requirement is the completion of an "Application for Participation in Special Olympics" form. Once this form is on file in the Special Olympics office, the athlete may par- ticipate in any sport that they choose. Team River Runner (TRR), established in August 2004 in the Washington, DC area, is an all-volunteer organization run by kayakers. Through whitewater kayaking on various rivers, lakes, and the ocean, TRR promotes health, healing, and new challenges for healing Veterans and their families. Pool Sessions Available!! We are having pool sessions at the Northwest Pool (2925 Apollo Way) on Mondays, 8- 9:30pm. Sessions can be held on the river or at the Sparks Marina on other days and times with prior coordination. Arts and Crafts Class We've teamed up with VSA arts to provide Weekly Wonders, a craft/art workshop held on Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Larry D. Johnson Community Center, 1200 12th Street. Partici- pants (16 yrs. or older) will develop their artistic abilities through a variety of fun projects. Cost: $5 per month. For more information contact: Manal Toppozada at 775-324-5521 or visit http://www.note-ables.org/ IOS Academy IOS Academy is a class for teaching and tutoring disabled patrons on how to use mobile devices through the use of screen reading (and in some cases magnification) assistive technologies. The class is conducted on a peer-to-peer basis where attendees can tutor and learn from each other. In addition to the training, class materials are provided. The class is not limited to just IOS devices de- spite its name, attendees can also get hands on learning experience with other formats such as An- droid and Windows phones. Attendees can also learn how to use the MAC or PC with either screen reading or magnification assistive technologies. Oh, and did I mention that the class is FREE?
