CAPE TOWN TOURS | Cape Malay Cooking Safari | Pick up from your hotel | You will be picked up from your Cape Town city based hotel; pick up time will be around 08:30 am from the hotel. This is a really interactive experience with one of the country’s oldest established communities- dating back to their forced arrival to these shores as captives in the 1600's. As their lands in the East were being occupied by European Colonists- dissenters were loaded onto sailing ships and banished to other colonies around the world- the Cape of Good Hope being one. The so-called Cape Malays - this race classification being an Apartheid construct-were talented and productive people and were deployed in building the Cape Colony. Amongst them were builders, architects, carpenters, tailors, traders, fishermen and gardeners. We visit this community who was confined to an area on the slopes of Signal Hill called the Bo-Kaap, or Cape Malay area. Begin with a Walking Tour of the Historic, Heritage Protected area of cobbled streets, colourful Cape Georgian homes, community corner stores that stock everything, and a number of mosques dating from 1795 to 1958. We visit a Community Empowerment Project, the popular local Spice (Masala) shop and the Bo-Kaap Museum. We then visit our hostess- a local resident, for an exciting encounter with her religious, cultural and indeed culinary background- in her home! You will participate in preparing and cooking samoosas, roti (flat bread) and chicken or veg curry-in the kitchen around her table- which you will enjoy at the end. Lunch | Lunch is included at the local family’s home (excluding drinks) Return to your hotel | Afterwards you will be transferred back to your hotel. Drop off time at approx. 12:30 pm Services Included | Vehicle & guide services: Return transfers with English guide Entrance fees included: Bo-Kaap Museum, Cooking session/demo and ingredients for cooking session. Donations or gifts are very welcome and we are happy to assist in determining the appropriateness of clients’ kind gesture. In some cases we also have a “wish list” which clients may have prior to their departure from home Guests are to wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing in respect to this predominantly Muslim community (e.g. no miniskirts/shorts, bare shoulders, sexy clothing, and flashy jewelry). Cape Town is an incredibly musical city. This is the city where music is at its most creative in South Africa, something which is due partly to the natural environment we have, which encourages creativity, but mainly it is because of the history of the city and the diversity of people and cultures and sounds that have ended up here. On this special music journey we are doing to travel deep inside the jazz music of the city, by visiting local jazz musicians in their homes. Part one is a visit to the home of a jazz musician for dinner, with music and conversation, and part two is a visit either to the home of a second musician for a nightcap, or to a jazz venue for the late set. The experience is intimate and deep, full of music and engagement and fun. It is a unique opportunity to meet local musicians away from club stages, and an excellent way to discover more about Cape Town and the lives of the people that live in it – through the music. Our hosts include will Cape Town musicians young and old, all of them composers and performers. These are the musicians defining the sound of the city. Highlights: - Meet local jazz musicians in their homes - dine on local cuisine in the homes of the musicians - discover the city through her music Inclusions: - supper - tea or coffee - entrance fees to jazz venue if applicable Exclusions: - alcoholic drinks - discretionary tips Half day tour 19:00 – 23:30 Return | Afterwards you will be transferred back to the hotel if required. Tour starts at 10:30 am. Meeting point: Cullinan Tourism offices, 99 Oak Avenue, Cullinan Community Ambassador: Peterson Mahlangu About 20 minutes east of Pretoria is the small mining town of Cullinan. This is home to the third richest diamond mine producer in South Africa. But perhaps its biggest claim to fame is the discovery of the world’s largest diamond. On the town’s outskirts, is Refilwe - a treasure which remains largely undiscovered. This is something that Peterson Mahlangu, the founder of Fundani Tours, is slowly changing with his walking tours. A sad irony resides in its name. In SeSotho, Refilwe means “We have been given /blessed”. Yet it’s not immediately evident what it is that its people have been blessed with. The township is a far cry from the leafy mining village up the road. But soon this “gift” reveals itself. We visit the family hostels and we’re invited into people’s homes. We’re warmly welcomed and even overwhelmed by the hospitality. Wide-eyed kids affectionately scream the words lekgoa (white person) as we head to the next place of interest. And even though we stick out like a sore thumb, we’re never made to feel out of place. Refilwe is predominantly made up of people from the northern province of Limpopo. And despite all the different languages at play in the township, there is a harmonious multiculturalism that we pick up on from the moment we arrive. We hear the words Thobela (hello) said to us by everyone, everywhere we go. We pass Sedibeng Primary School, the first school to be built in Refilwe. And as we continue walking the township, we also notice that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Refilwe. Small businesses are everywhere. We pass by street vendors, several backyard tuck shops, and restaurants people have started in their cleared out garages. We stop at one of the local restaurants, Chakula Pub and Restaurant, where we place an order and go off to No.7 Mine Dam, while our food is being prepared. No.7 is the slime damn created by the debris from the diamond
