Transformations | Call to Artists 2019 City of St. Catharines Annual Juried Exhibit September 16, 2019 – March 13, 2020 “The Only Thing That is Constant Is Change” – Heraclitus Artists are invited to submit artwork proposals for a new exhibit at City Hall. “Transformations” asks the artist to investigate the positive and negative transitions and transformations that shape human beings and the world. As the seasons change, we are reminded of how quickly things that once were are no longer. We are constantly teetering on moments of change, brought on by memories, decisions, histories and futures. What hangs in the balance, what will reach its limit, and where and when? These transformations can leave behind tokens or a scar. This exhibit seeks to focus on transformations that face our artists and our world on a daily basis such as, psychological, environmental, global, etc. Submissions of original artwork created within the past three (3) years will be considered from professional, student and amateur artists. Artists will be paid an exhibition fee and their work will be considered for acquisition into the City of St. Catharines’ Civic Art Collection. The Jury will take the following criteria into consideration when selecting work for the exhibit: Originality Artistic merit and interest Relationship and response to exhibit theme Creativity of expression and medium used Clarity and effectiveness of Artist’s Statement The ability to display the work of art Final works selected will collectively o Provide a variety of perspectives on the theme of the exhibit. o Reflect the artistic community of St. Catharines and Niagara. Submission Deadline: Monday June 24, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.
Artwork Submission Information Selection Process and Conditions of Entry: 1. Works will be reviewed by a Jury approved by the City’s Public Art Advisory Committee. 2. Inclusion in the exhibit may involve your work being photographed, in whole or in part. Images could be used for exhibit promotional purposes (including online/social media) and will be preserved for administration, program development and archival purposes. 3. Artist fees will be paid at the CARFAC group show rate as an Exhibition in Other Public Places. An additional $25 will be provided as a copyright fee for use as described in #2. 4. The Jury’s decision is final. Artists will be notified of the Jury’s decision by Friday August 2, 2019. No submissions may be withdrawn or altered once accepted for exhibition. 5. Successful applicants are responsible for delivering their work as outlined in their acceptance letter. 6. All artwork will be made available for display for the entire period of the exhibition (September 16, 2019 to March 20, 2020). 7. Artists must reside within the Niagara Region. 8. Artwork created more than three (3) years ago will not be considered for the exhibition. 9. Each work must be equipped and suitable for hanging on a hook system and must not exceed 25 kg. If there is concern regarding the long-term safety of the work in relation to its hanging, the work may be excluded or returned to the artist for alterations. 10. The Jury reserves the right to accept or reject any or all applications and shall not be bound to accept any of them, and reserves the right at any time to cancel the exhibition or the Call to Artists. 11. The selected artwork may be considered for acquisition into the City of St. Catharines’ Civic Art Collection. The Public Art Advisory Committee will select work as it relates to the St. Catharines Public Art Policy. Cultural Services staff will contact artists to determine interest in advance.
Summary of Dates: Deadline for Submissions: Monday June 24, 2019 Notification of Successful Entries: Friday August 2, 2019 Delivery of Artwork: Monday September 9, 2019 Exhibit Start Date: Monday September 16, 2019 Exhibit Reception: Friday September 27, 2019 Exhibit Closing: Friday March 20, 2020 Artwork Pick-Up: Monday March 23, 2020 How to Apply: Please provide the following via email or mail. Incomplete applications may not be considered: Completed Entry Form 1 to 4 digital images of each work that you propose to exhibit (minimum of 150 dpi jpeg). A maximum of THREE WORKS will be considered per artist. Artist Biography or Resume. Artist Statement providing insight into each piece and explaining its relationship to the exhibit theme. (This statement helps the jury understand your intentions. If selected it will be included on the exhibit label for public viewing. Limit 200 words per work.) Please DO NOT submit original works of art. Submission material will NOT be returned. Submissions must be received by Monday, June 24, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.
