Introduction Besides showing a special physical sense of painting, the expressive work of Fahar Al-Salih also reveals a lot about the artist's nomadic biography. The result of his 2 year study with Professor Markus Lüpertz, 3 year color study with Jerry Zeniuk and 1 year masterclass with Hermann Nitsch, can be very well seen in his SPONGE MOSAIC WORKS as well as in his „SHELTER“ painting series. In his paintings but also in his sculptural sponge objects and his photographies, Al-Salih uses the “shelter” motif to deal with the very human need and search for protection and a home. With the combination of his painting and sculpturing endeavors in his most recent works, his work has now come full circle and he opens a new stylistic chapter.
Sponge objects Since 2003, Fahar has been creating his mixed-media works with sponges. The works are evidence of both his cultural background and his examination of contemporary Western art. This connection is reflected in a canon of materials that separates from tradition and creates free spaces to develop an individual design language. The industrial sponge plays a crucial role in these works. Like the clay of classical mosaics, it is ductile and soft; only through hardening does it become unchangeable and durable. The sponge works are resistant to humidity therefore they also can be presented in spa indoor areas.

Action Painting Action painting is a direct and dynamic painting technique that gets its strength from the visibility of the process. The composition is not preconceived, but is created on the canvas through the interplay of action and reflection. Like an oscilloscope, it is the temporary recording of the creative decisions of the artist. This directness creates a raw and intimate document that is not reproducible.

Photographie The Dark Side The Dark Side is the title of the new photographic low-key series of multimedia artist Fahar Al-Salih, known for his explosive action paintings and vibrantly colourful sponge objects. Yet his photographic oeuvre talks a different language, choosing an almost quiet and melancholic form of expression. In his photographs, mostly taken on journeys to the various homelands of the Iraqi-born artist, Al-Salih documents his surroundings in an almost voyeuristic manner, as the snapshots are taken spontaneously in the moment, hardly noticed by the depicted subjects. And still the images reach beyond concrete matters, beyond the visible, as if the photographs were to reveal a substance in between one moment and another, the oscillating atmosphere. In his series the artist documents an almost cineastic ‘univers noir', capturing a magic twilight that reminds us not only of cinematic stylistic devices, but leads back to the late renaissance, when the use of harsh and dramatic contrasts became a main stylistic tool and gained fame through the works of distinguished painters, like Caravaggio or Rembrandt. Where myths and religious motives provided emotional charge and catharsis, the photographs of Al-Salih live without horror or eros. It is the magic of the present in all its’ negligibility, which is so disappointing and wins us over yet again.
