Total Solar Eclipse in Chile - 4 days Astro Tour
On July 2 2019 a Total Solar Eclipse will occur at around 16:30 local time
in the region of Coquimbo in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The Totality
occurs at 16:46 and last for 2 minutes and 18 seconds. During Totality
you could remove your solar safety glasses and look at a mind-blowing
“black hole in the sky “. At this point it´s possible to appreciate the
sun´s powerful pulsing corona, which appears as a brilliant white ring
around the edges of the moon. Often the Stella of Solar explosions ragging above the white ring
can be clearly seen during Totality and by the end of it a phenomena called the “diamond ring”
occurs when the light breaks around the moon as the sun starts appearing again.
To provide our visitors the best possible and accessible conditions for
this unique event we have an agreement with a strategically located
lodging in Choros bajos, a small coastal community 575 km north of San-
tiago, between La Serena and Copiapo. This is our “Choros base camp”,
here we have available 3 rooms with matrimonial beds, 24 bunk beds on
4 persons shared rooms and 15 double camping tents. The lodging is
well equipped with a swimming pool, a dining room, warm water showers. It has a vast garden
area to chillout or stargazing at nigth. Additionally to the facilities the lodging has to offer, we are
setting up domes dining tents and will provide free shared WLAN. Appropriate vehicles are provi-
ded from our side, so you don´t need to care about getting around, and in the case you arrive with
your car, parking slots are available.
The day of the total solar eclipse we will drive as a group for about 1 ½
hours using our vehicles to the sighting site, where we can enjoy in
closed community this wonder of mother nature. On site, shadow shel-
ters with camping chairs, a light dinner, snacks, cold and warm drinks
are available at no extra cost. After the event we drive back to our Choros
Base Camp, where we enjoy in community a mass barbeque on the twi-
We also have planned other activities to give you a wide glimpse of this
coastal area of the Atacama Desert and so we will visit the coastal village
Chañaral de Aceituno, in the Pinguino de Humboldt National Park.
Being in the Atacama Desert a night of stargazing is a must. We have or-
ganized a naked eye night astronomical tour in Punta Colorada with a
local astro guide.

Itinerary
Start date and place: Sunday, June 30 2019 in Copiapo or Bahia Inglesa.
End date and place: Wednesday, July 3 2019 in Copiapo.
Duration: 4 Days.
Day 1: Sunday, June 30 2019: Pick up in Copiapo – Choros Bajos Base Camp.
Pick up in Copiapo ( see pick up places ) and drive to Choros bajos base camp along the Ruta Pan-
america 5. It is a 3,5 hours drive and we will stop for lunch and sightseeing on the way. Arrive to Cho-
ros camp.
Transfer and tour: Shared with other tourists.
Accommodation: According to your choice at Hostal Los Delfines in Choros.
Meals: Dinner.

Day 2: Monday, July 1 2019: Choros Bajos Base Camp – Caleta Chañaral – Choros Bajos Base
Camp
Full day tour along the Chilean coast and visit Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno, at the Pacific Ocean, part
of the National Park Pinguino de Humboldt. Return to Base camp at 5 pm. (120 km roundtrip).
At night: Transfer to Punta Colorada, 40 km from the base camp, to observe the Atacama sky, naked
eye, with a local astro guide.
Transfer and tour: Shared with other tourists.
Accommodation: According to your choice at Hostal Los Delfines in Choros.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner in dinner room. Box lunch underway.
Day 3: Tuesday, July 2 2019: Choros Bajos Base Camp – Almirante Latorre Area – Choros Bajos
Base Camp.
Day of observation of the solar eclipse in the nearest of base camp. Total Solar Eclipse at around
16.38 hrs. We leave at 8 am from our base camp to Almirante Latorre, one of the 8 sites in the Coqui-
mbo region where the total eclipse will be seen in full (2 minutes and 35 seconds). Arrival to Almiran-
te Latorre area estimated at 10.00 am. We will provide comfortable mess tent, tables and seats to
wait for the eclipse. A light lunch, snacks and hot /cold and drinks will be available for our guests at
no extra cost.
Drive back to base camp at the end of the eclipse. (170 kms. Round trip).
Celebration and Farewell dinner.

Day 4: Wednesday, July 3 2019: Choros Bajos Base Camp – Copiapo – Santiago.
Transfer to bus terminal or airport in Copiapo (350 km, 4-hour drive) to continue to Santiago de Chi-
le.
Important notice: Arrival to Copiapo airport / Bahia Inglesa is scheduled around 2 pm and the bus
will stop in the following places:

The most convenient option is to buy all your flights online. In fact it is not uncommon for prices on
the Internet to be less expensive than those that we are able to provide for you. However, we advise
you with pleasure the flights and we do not take any comission.
Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any problems with international or domestic flights and if
you have any questions.
Terms of Payment
To confirm your booking we request a deposit of 30% of the total price by bank transfer or by credit
card. The balance of your trip is due at the latest 45 days before departure.
Cancellation conditions
All cancellations must make the subject of an email sent to the Travel 21 Online. The amount of
cancellation costs varies according to the moment when the cancellation occurs:
All cancelations have a penalty 10% of the cost of the trip.
Between 45 and 30 days prior to departure: 60% of the land cost will be refunded.
Between 29 and 15 days of departure: 45% of the land cost will be refunded.
Cancellation 14 days or less prior to departure – no refunds.
Reimbursement Terms
No reimbursement is provided if, for any reason, a participant renounces the completion of the pro-
gram after departure, or if the weather conditions, or other factors, make it impossible to achieve
the objectives. In the event that a participant needs help, or leave the program before completion,
for any reason, the participant will be responsible for all extra costs. Travel 21 Online and the invol-
ved service providers do not assume any costs for the delay, modification of the program or the
cancellation of the trip in case of adverse weather conditions, strikes, robberies, natural disasters,
riots, acts of terrorism, wars, restrictions or government regulations, failure to comply with pre-
established timetables by means of transport on which Travel 21 Online has no control.

Weather conditions:
In June – July it is winter time in Chile, in the area of La Serena we usually do not expect rain, but the
temperatures are rather low, with 0°C early in the morning and 15°C to 20°C around 1 – 2 pm. Warm
clothing and wind stopper jacket are recommended.
Difficulty:
Difficulty: Easy tour, not physical effort involved.
The expedition doesn’t require previous experience or a special preparation. You will be in the out-
door and in the nature most of the time, therefore adequate clothing and equipment is needed, such
as sunglasses, sun screen, hut, warm and light clothes, sleeping bag in case you are staying in tent.
