Introduction Welcome to the TILT Annual Learning and Teaching Conference (ALTC) 2021! This year we are delighted to welcome you to join us for the TILT ALTC 2021 main conference held online 9am – 5.30pm Tuesday 14th September, and the TILT ALTC 2021 conference Fringe also held online and launching Wednesday 1st September. The focus of this year’s conference is learning and teaching in a pandemic: opportunities, challenged and lessons learnt. The Covid-19 pandemic involved the expeditious adaptation of learning and teaching in Higher Education Institutions. Now in our second year of living in the midst of a worldwide pandemic the impacts on learning and teaching have begun to settle somewhat. Through the lens of three Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoTL) themes: Active, Collaborative Learning; Teaching, Technology, and the Pandemic; and Learning Community, TILT ALTC 2021 explores the experience(s) of learning and teaching in the midst of a worldwide pandemic with a view to distil insights, effective practice(s) and lessons learnt to take forward through Covid-19 and beyond. This year’s conference includes presenters drawn from across NTU as well as external national and international colleagues, and this booklet has been designed to: • provide you with guidance on how to join TILT ALTC 2021 main conference sessions and conference Fringe sessions online; and, • provide you with the full programme for the main conference and the conference Fringe. For the latest version of this booklet please visit the TILT ALTC Webpage. Follow us on Twitter If you use Twitter, we encourage you to use the conference hashtag (#NTUALTC21) and follow us @NTUTILT. Stephen is a member of NRC's Research Ethics Board. He is a popular keynote speaker and has spoken in three dozen countries on six continents. Keynote Address The pandemic of 2020-2021 challenged academics to redefine what we mean by a university education whether delivered online or in person. What really matters, what do we want, and what can we live without? We learned to use new tools and shared new experiences with each other. We found ways to work together and discovered things like Zoom fatigue and discussion boards and teams environments and padlet. And we learned about how ‘resilient’ our pedagogies and learning communities are - what happens when our work, learning and home environments merge into each other. Nobody was untouched by the pandemic, and we all have stories of learning to share. In this presentation, Stephen Downes draws on his experience and coverage of stories of learning and teaching in the pandemic to bring together the best of what we learned over the last two years. From the perspective of three conference themes: 1. Active, Collaborative Learning, 2. Digital Tools and Technologies, and 3. Learning Communities, he looks at where academics and universities excelled, where they struggled, and where they adopted new practices that may have a more lasting impact. He summarises these into ten core lessons we learned about learning and teaching during the pandemic, three challenges facing us as we leverage these into a better 'new normal', and three concrete opportunities for action we can take to facilitate improvements in teaching and learning, based on these lessons. Please click to view Stephen talk about his upcoming keynote address. 6
TILT ALTC 2021 Conference Focus TILT ALTC 2021 explores the experience(s) of learning and teaching in the midst of a worldwide pandemic with a view to distil insights, effective practice(s) and lessons learnt. These issues are explored through the lens of three Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoTL) themes set out below. Theme One - Active, Collaborative Learning – a continuum of practice(s): Stories from Lockdown / Socially Distanced Classrooms Beyond the vital hard work of getting learning and teaching up and running in the context of the pandemic, lay even more difficult questions of how to ensure a parity of experience online with that of offline. Would pedagogies associated with student inclusion and engagement and improvements in progression and attainment such as Active, Collaborative Learning (ACL) translate / be resilient to the demands of shifting learning and teaching modalities: online, blended learning, on-campus and mixed method? This theme focuses on staff and student experiences of ACL during the pandemic – a continuum of practice ranging from one or more ACL activities employed across shifting modalities to wholescale ACL approaches i.e. SCALE-UP, and distils insights, lessons learnt and effective practice(s) to take forward. Theme Two - Teaching, Technology and the Pandemic: Everyday Scholarship Stories of Digital Tools and Technologies The Covid-19 pandemic has involved the expeditious adaptation of learning, teaching and assessment in Higher Education Institutions. University staff and students alike have used digital tools and technologies to pivot learning, teaching and assessment at pace across modalities: online, blended learning, on-campus, and mixed method. This sub-theme focuses on staff and student’s experiences of engaging with digital tools and technologies across different learning environments, and insights and lessons learnt that could / should shape the future of learning, teaching and assessment in HE. Theme Three - Being Together, While Apart: Sustaining Learning Communities through and beyond Covid The interactive, collaborative, and social aspects of learning experiences including the hidden curriculum, captured by the concept of Learning Community, are associated with belonging, shared purpose and student engagement, progression, and attainment. Learning communities are about people. A central challenge posed by Covid-19 for HEI’s has been maintaining that strong sense of being together while physically apart. Through the lens of ‘positive relationships’, ‘wellbeing’, and ‘Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion’, the Learning Community theme puts centre stage staff and student experiences of being together, while apart and distils insights, lessons learnt and effective practice(s) to support the development of Learning Community and student experience to which we aspire. 7
