Where Does the Secret Lay? Ahmed Al-Maghlouth - Media and Communication Unit Manager Article The first lady, Betty Ford, did not think for once that her name will go down in the history as one of the greatest women who fought breast cancer. In 1974, a few months after her husband has surprisingly become the 38th President of the United States which was after the resignation of Richard Nixon. Mrs. Ford was then diagnosed with one of the diseases that cannot be revealed to the public at that time. According to Tasha N. Dubriwny, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication & Women’s and Gender Studies Program Texas A&M University, Talking about cancers, especially breast cancer, was a taboo so it had no name. Breast cancer was treated like myths that are told to the world, It was included under the name of gynecological diseases, but with no specific and accurate name for it. Perhaps the first lady’s frankness and independence, which she showed since the first months of her husband’s presidency was the real reason behind what we see from the tremendous development in the continuous research, and studies on ways to eliminate this type of cancer and naming it by its accurate name. [Thanks to Allah, then to the courage of Mrs. Ford who brought this disease out of the darkness into the media and the press. Also, she invited the media to visit the hospital and take pictures at a time when the whole world was looking forward to see her as the presidents companion in his travels, and meetings with heads of the world]. After her mastectomy, and her speech to the media, the trajectory of American women’s health care has changed forever. Thousands of women went to visit clinics to begin the journey of early detection of this disease. Not only that, but during the first week after that famous speech, the White House received more than 35,000 messages of admiration and solidarity, which can be summarized to you here as “Early Detection is the key”. This first lady’s journey did not end here, she founded the Betty Ford Center in Eisenhower for rehabilitation, awareness-raising, and fund raising for early detection of breast cancer. In 2011, Mrs. Ford passed away at the age of 93 after leaving an extraordinary legacy for women and the world. Dear reader: According to the statistics of the Saudi Cancer Registry (2016), breast cancer ranked first with (2282 cases), with a rate of %17.3 among both genders, and %30.4 of all cancers among women. There are some reports that predict that the average lifespan will increase by more than ten years, within a few years, so that the average age is around eighty years. The increasing of the life expectancy of Arabs is a good thing. However, it put us in a difficult situation if we can see the whole picture. Although the scientific progress has a lot of benefits in many fields including health care which created new lifestyles that may seem strange in our Arabic culture. The trend towards urbanization industrialization and technological changes has caused changes in the traditional form of the family such as family disintegration. After having three or four generations living in one house we see now that the trend in societies is to live with smaller families. The hospital has received more than 30,000 patients in the Emergency Medicine Section during the past period, %30-25 of those patients suffer from respiratory symptoms whether they were confirmed or suspected cases of Covid-19 One of the proactive measures that the hospital has taken on is the optical sorting system. where each patient must pass through this point of sorting before entering the Emergency Medicine Section. After that, the patient is guided to the right and suitable path for such cases. The Emergency Medicine Section has created a completely private, isolated pathway for patients with respiratory symptoms. These patients are then registered and their vital signs are taken. ” I am not the only hero in the cardiac catheterization lab because saving one life requires an entire team.” Achievement Dr.Raed Al-Qatshan - Cardiology Consultant انجاز Interviewers: Reem Al-Subaie - Anwar Al-Mutairi The Catherization Lab is filled with stories that are stuck in the minds of those who have witnessed them. Through these stories, we sense the value of life. Some of these stories have survived to continue the rest of the chapters while others were unfinished stories. There is no doubt that the scientific progress has had an effective role in making this kind of surgery successful. For this, we thank Allah who blessed us with all of these blessings. Then, we thank our competent doctors who are capable of responding rapidly to emergency situations. Our hero, Dr. Raed Alkutshan, narrated one of the cases that had a huge impact on him as well as on the medical team. Um Mohammed is in her 50’s. She lives in Jazan region and comes to Jubail every now and then to visit her only son. She was suffering from a pain in the chest along with signs that indicates heart problems. For this, her son insisted that she receives her treatment in the Royal Commission Hospital. Regardless of his constant insistence, Um Mohammed could not care less and went back to her home. However, her son could not rest, so he decided to bring her back to receive the treatment. Um Mohammed’s situation got worse after hearing the news of the death of her son and his family in a car accident while they were on their way to her. After that Um Mohammed’s husband took upon himself to complete what his son left unfinished. When she arrived to Jubail, she got even worse to the extent that she went immediately to the ER. Then, the medical team has decided to preform heart catherization; as soon as they started the procedure, her heart stopped. Thus, they immediately preformed the CPR. Due to the team rapid response, and to Um Mohammed’s strong will to survive, her heart started to beat again. Despite of this, Um Mohammed has fallen into a coma which required her to be in the ICU. In less than 24 hours, Dr. Raed took a courageous step to do the catherization although she was in a critical situation. Despite the efforts of the specialized medical teams who successfully performed the procedure, Um Mohammed was still in the coma which lasted for three weeks. During that time, her husband has not left her side for a moment, for he believed that she will survive. In the third week, her vital signs started to improve until she awakened and recovered. She walked through the doors of hope to continue the chapters of her life. Third Issue 21 Mar 2021

Delivering Medicines to Beneficiaries in initiative the Royal Commission Hospital “It is said that ‘People show their true colours in difficult times’. This is what the compatriots of our beloved country have shown during the breakout of coronavirus. Our colleagues in the pharmacy exerted their efforts and energy to reduce the impact of the pandemic. Thus, they came up with a way to address the need of delivering the medicine to the beneficiaries safely.” Bader Alqannass, Head of Pharmacy Covid19- pandemic has struck the world and wrecked its balance. What we used to do freely has been limited in a way that forced changes in our lifestyles. The Ministry of Health has imposed some proactive measures; one of which was the lockdown of the entire country to stop the outbreak of the virus. Taking such a decision was the motive and the reason behind what our heroes in the pharmacy department has done. The pharmacy team has organized an initiative to deliver medicine to patients without the need to visit the hospital in order to practice the social distancing and maintain the safety of patients. So, the patients can either call or contact the pharmacy by using WhatsApp. From the beginning of the pandemic until this day, the pharmacy team took upon themselves the mission of delivering medicine to the elderly, children and those with weak immune system. Every day during the lockdown and from 9 am to 3 pm, the pharmacists took turns to deliver the medicine. It is worth noting that during that time, the pharmacy team has delivered fifty prescriptions a day and sometimes they used their own cars to do the mission. Lastly, there is no doubt that our ways of life have changed as a result of what we have witnessed during the breakout of covid19-. An initiative like this started to address an excessive need under difficult times may now become a means to facilitate the new lifestyle. Third Issue 23 Mar 2021

Story “Nursing is a humane profession before it is considered as a practical one” Wadha Al-Amiri Interviewed by: Anwar Almutairi, Muzun Alhajiri Media and Communication Unit trainees. On the 23rd of October at 2:00 am, while the brave nurse was driving her car near the 6th Rd., Wadha witnessed a horrible car accident that involved a family of 8 members due to a reckless driver. The driver’s recklessness led to several severe injuries that required immediate medical intervention. So, she called the ambulance immediately, but once she evaluated the severity of the injuries, Wadha knew that she cannot wait for the ambulance to arrive; so, she decided to help them herself. Wadha helped the mother who was unconscious due to the terrific crash by making sure that her case does not need immediate medical intervention. Once she discovered that the girl in the car was suffering from a pain in the lower part of her body, she instructed her to not move for the fear that her condition may get worse. At the same time, Wadha saw that the housekeeper’s condition can wait until the arrival of the ambulance. Moving to check on the other members of the family, she saw that the two months old twins’ condition needs an immediate medical care. So, the brave nurse couldn’t do anything except moving them to the hospital in her car with their older siblings. Thanks to Allah, now, the family members are sound and well after Wadha transferred them to the hospital at the right time to receive the necessary medical assistance. Third Issue 33 Mar 2021
