Thinking Green is a series of free community sustainable living workshops presented by the City of Swan. The series aims to inspire participants to change their lifestyle to improve their wellbeing and be kinder to the environment. Make your own rag rug or bathmat Free workshop! Create something useful and chic out of old rags and scrap fabric! In this hands-on workshop, Miriam Gardiner will teach participants to make a Swedish Woven Rug using post war techniques like looping, weaving and tying strips of used fabric and rags into a flat thick rug or bathmat. Participants will create their own small bespoke rug or bathmat made of out materials which would otherwise end up in landfill. People are welcome to bring their own rags as well. This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 14 and over. Bike maintenance Free workshopS! Bike maintenance: Part 1 A hands-on two hour bike maintenance session covering the basics, presented by Bike Dr. Learn about about bike parts, servicing, puncture repair and how to clean and maintain your chain. Bring your own bike to work on under the guidance of a mechanic and gain practical mechanical knowledge the fun way! Bike maintenance: Part 2 A hands-on two and a half hour session focused on more complex maintenance and fine tuning. You will cover safety checks and bike servicing with a focus on gears and drivetrain maintenance. From theory to practice, a professional mechanic will walk you through all the factors that might be causing your gears to go ‘clunk’. Bike Maintenance: Part 1 is a pre-requisite. These workshops are suitable for adults and children aged 14 and over; children as young as 8 may attend if accompanied by an adult. BYO bicycle – essential! Cloth nappies for newborns Free workshop! Do you want a hands-on opportunity to check out cloth nappies and have all your questions answered? Cloth nappies have many advantages including reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill; however the different brands, sizes and fabrics can be confusing. New parents often question “will my newborn really fit into this nappy?”, “how do I use cloth at night?” and “do you have reusable swim nappies?” Presented by Aline Brion from Green Skills, this workshop and display introduces new parents to modern cloth nappies. Aline is an environmental scientist, community educator and mum of four who has used cloth nappies for 10 years! All welcome – bring the whole family. Introduction to permaculture Free workshop! Are you new to gardening, do you grow your vegetables or have you been gardening for decades? Have you heard about permaculture? Permaculture design was created in Australia (Tasmania, actually) over 40 years ago and is a design process drawing from nature to provide a practical, energy efficient and close to self-sufficient landscape. It is closed loop, holistic and much more than growing food. This introductory workshop, presented by permaculturalist and educator Fiona Blackham, brings it back to the basics of permaculture design (not gardening!). You will take home a head full of ideas and skills on how to look through ‘permaculture design goggles’. This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 14 and over. Low cost gardening Free workshop! On a budget, renting or not sure where to start with gardening without having to spend a heap of money? Presented by Fiona Blackham, this workshop runs through practical ways to garden on a budget including seed saving, cuttings, turning green waste into garden beds and utilising recycled materials to build with or grow in. Understand the basic tools to use and where to get them from. There will also be a demonstration on how to make a great compost tea for your garden, how to plant for your needs so you can avoid waste, and where to go to trade your extra produce. Please bring a clean glass jar with lid, up to one litre, to take home compost tea. Also bring along any seeds you want to swap! This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 14 and over. April 2020 school holiday workshops Sustainability warriors Explore the topic of sustainability: what is sustainability, what are natural resources, how can we use them and what can we do to reduce, reuse and recycle? Activities include colouring, an interactive sorting game and decorating an eco-bag. Each child will take home their own decorated bag and a colouring book about nature’s recyclers. Presented by Kids Nature Club. Suitable for children aged 6 to 13. Parent/guardian supervision is not required; they may choose to browse the library or participate as they please. Free workshopS for kids & families Caring for wildlife We have many native local birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians in our backyards and local bushland. Join Native Animal Rescue, a not-for-profit organisation located in the City of Swan, to learn about these animals and what we can do to care for them including why we shouldn’t feed native animals human food, how to attract wildlife into your backyard and what to do if you find an injured or sick native animal. April 2020 school holiday workshops Minibeasts Join Kids Nature Club to learn about minibeasts; arachnids and invertebrates. After the interactive presentation on minibeast megastars and bewildering bugs, kids will have the chance to hold a live invertebrate such as a stick or leaf insect. There will also be a discovery table complete with magnifiers, bugs in resin and life cycle figurine sets. The workshop ends with a build-a-bug activity. Suitable for children aged 6 to 13. Worm farming Free workshop! Learn how to use a worm farm to transform household food scraps into useful products for your garden. Kevin Smith from The Worm Shed presents on all aspects of worm farming and the role worms play in recycling and waste management. This is followed by a demonstration of setting up and maintaining a worm farm. Worm Café worm farms will be available to purchase. Residents and ratepayers of the City are entitled to a $110 subsidy on a worm farm, complete with worms and worm castings or a $50 subsidy on 1kg of worms. This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 14 and over, except for the workshop at Lockridge Community Gardens which has been designed to also be suitable for younger children if accompanied by an adult. Worm Farming Subsidy The City of Swan is offering residents and ratepayers a $110 subsidy on the purchase of a worm farm, which comes complete with worms, worm castings and a comprehensive instruction booklet, or a $50 subsidy on 1kg of worms. Worm farming is a simple way of converting food scraps and other organic materials into nutrient rich products for the garden. A worm farm produces worm castings and ‘worm wiz’ which are natural, non-toxic and full of beneficial nutrients for your plants. As well as contributing to a thriving garden, worm farms also help to reduce waste, improve soil and protect water quality. Worm farms and worms will be available to purchase at the free worm farm workshops provided by the City of Swan in partnership with The Worm Shed. Fauna habitat creations Photo: Mandy Bamford Free workshop! Encourage native wildlife into your garden by providing a safe shelter. Come along to this hands-on workshop, chock full of ideas to help wildlife set up house in your backyard. Ecologists Mike and Mandy Bamford will provide you with lots of practical tips for creating fauna shelters in your backyard; lizard lounges, bandicoot bungalows, insect hotels, frog bogs and more. Then you’ll work in a group to construct a creature creation to take home or, for the workshop held at the Recycling Centre – Bullsbrook, you can choose to install it in the nearby bushland. The thrifty fashionista: look (and feel) fabulous on less Free workshop! Do you have a wardrobe full of clothes but feel like you have nothing to wear? In Australia, we are suffering from a wardrobe crisis, with the average Australian woman wearing only 40% of the clothes she owns. In this workshop, you will learn how to escape the fast fashion cycle, make better use of what you already have and wear your clothes with confidence. Presented by Dr Jane Genovese. Lindsay Miles from Treading My Own Path talks about the journey to living plastic free; understanding the challenges, where to start, and how to make big and small changes along the way. This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 14 and over. DIY skincare Free workshop! This hands-on workshop introduces homemade skincare products as a natural, ecofriendly and cost effective alternative to buying store- bought products. There’ll be a short presentation before participants make two of their own products, a deodorant and body scrub, and there will be a demo of making cold cream moisturizer, with samples to take home. Become a Friends Group member Friends Groups are volunteers who undertake bushcare activities in local reserves that are under the management of City of Swan. Activities you can get involved with include: • Planting native trees • Protecting and restoring habitat for • Weed and rubbish removal native species • Dieback control • Creekline restoration Being in a Friends Group allows you to: • Meet new people with a similar • Conserve and restore the natural environmental passion environment • Learn about WA's unique bushland • Get active and enjoy the outdoors!
