Research areas of interest include (1) social and behavioral research related to HIV/AIDS pre- vention, care, and treatment in local environments; (2) development of research infrastructure and research capacity; and (3) establishment or enhancement of partnerships among local in- vestigators, public health officials, institutions, and health care providers. Scope and Importance There were 36.7 million people living with HIV in 2015, up from 33.3 million in 2010, the re- sult of continuing new infections, people living longer with HIV, and general population growth. • Global prevalence (the percent of people ages 15-49 who are infected) has leveled since 2001 and was 0.8% in 2015. • 1.1 million People died of AIDS in 2015, a 45% decrease since its peak in 2005. Deaths have declined due in part to antiretroviral treatment (ART) scale-up. HIV remains a leading cause of death worldwide and the number one cause of death in Africa. HIV and AIDS in Western & Central Europe & North America regional overview:
• In 2015, an estimated 2.4 million people were living with HIV in Western and Central Eu- rope and North America. In the same year, there were roughly 91,000 new HIV infections and 22,000 people died of AIDS-related illnesses. • More than half of all new HIV infections occurred in the United States of America (USA), and more than a quarter occurred in six countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom (UK). The annual number of new HIV infections among adults in the region remained stable between 2010 and 2015.
