Our name derives from the two distinct communities of any university town, the local population and the university dwelling community and the ever improving relationship between them. Our Town and Gown is a space for both to meet, drink, eat, experience and revel. The Theatre is a revival of the building’s history as an Arts Cinema from 1933 trading as the Cosmopolitan Cinema. Our Black Box Theatre located on the top floor of the venue is a wonderfully intimate fringe theatre with an abundance of shows and experiences from the moment we open the doors. Please take your seats, the performance is about to begin! Box Office 01223 309796 www.townandgown.co.uk
Venue History In 1926, the interior of the 1866-built Central Hall and Conservative Club was gutted by fire. Rebuilt in 1927, the hall was used as a part-time 250 seat cinema, the Cosmopolitan Cinema, from 16th October 1933. It became full-time in 1940. It had a square-shaped one-floor auditorium with mirror projection from the ceiling. The floor was reconstructed and raked, and it became the Arts Cinema from 16th October 1947. The accent was on ‘quality’ films, and the Cambridge Film Festival became established there. The auditorium was ‘turned round’ in 1961 and seating increased to 320. A pair of Philips FP20 projectors with pulsed lamps were installed above the seating, again using mirrors. A Philips 16mm projector was installed in 1976 and the pulsed lamps were replaced by Orcon Xenon lamp houses. These were replaced in the 1980s with more powerful equipment and Dolby stereo was added with a CP50 processor (donated by none other than Ray Dolby, who had been a student at Emmanuel College) feeding Westrex power amps and JBL speakers. Strong Super Lumex Xenon lamp houses were added later. In the 1990s, Ray Dolby donated a CP45 processor which was in use when the cinema closed on 26th June 1999 with “Cinema Paradiso”. By the mid-2000s the building had become “B” Bar & Restaurant. Source Cinema Treasures. McMullen's Brewery has owned the site since 1999 and it has since operated as B BAR and most recently Baroosh. Bringing the venue up to the present we are excited to be launching our new Pub & Theatre venue. Our 100 seater theatre will be a flexible studio playing in all orientations featuring the best of fringe theatre programming with regular live entertainment throughout the venue and a food and drink menu to die for.

Quentin Crisp: May January Naked Hope 27th - 29th May Tickets £12 Fresh from its Off-Broadway debut and milestone 100th performance, Mark Farrelly’s hugely acclaimed solo play comes to Cambridge. “A masterclass” Broadway Baby “Farrelly’s mastery of his audience is total” Time Out Naked Hope depicts Quentin at two phases of his extraordinary life: alone in his Chelsea flat in the 1960s, certain that life has passed him by, and thirty years later, giving a performance of his one man show An Evening with Quentin Crisp in New York. Packed with witty gems on everything from cleaning (“Don’t bother - after the first four years the dirt won’t get any worse”) to marriage (“Is there life after marriage? The answer is no”), Naked Hope is a glorious, uplifting celebration of the urgent necessity to be your true self.
Adolf 4th & 5th June Tickets £12 The Führer's bunker, Berlin 1945, the air thick with betrayal. Hitler awaits the inevitable. Pip Utton, looking uncomfortably like the Führer, stands before a huge Nazi banner addressing his party faithful. He furnishes us with an acute anatomy of fascism; its ideological justifications; its poisoned utopias. We are in the presence of a compelling idealist, helplessly drawn in to his warped logic. Hitler is finished, his crusade defeated. We know how the story ends….. But Utton has reserved a sting for his tale...a sting so powerful it forces us to look within ourselves, questioning our own prejudices and intolerance. One of the most extraordinary, successful and powerful solo works ever presented. It is live theatre at its best and that touches us all; powerful, challenging, divisive and illustrative. ‘Adolf’ is utterly provocative and totally necessary; everyone should experience it. The Nobodies 8th & 9th June Tickets £12 WINNER OF THE COMMON AWARD 2020 - Top 5 Most Anticipated Shows Stage Door London 2020 - Lyn Gardner’s Top Picks Week 4 Vault Festival 2020 – British Theatre Recommended Show 2020. Naughty Boy June 23rd & 24th June Tickets £12 Acclaimed writer and comedian Eddy Brimson presents his debut play Naughty Boy. This one-man play brings Brimson’s natural wit into the darkly hedonistic world of Joe, a mysteriously complicated character whose life is full of twists and turns, violence and compassion, lies, and reality. All of which exposes some uncomfortable questions about both responsibility, and truth. In NAUGHTY BOY Brimson examines nature vs. nurture in this thrillingly provocative exploration of mental health, morality and politics. Raw, powerful and shocking, this is a not to be missed theatre experience from a talented performer and writer who jangles the nerves with his sharp writing on identity. To truly be oneself can lead some down both a brave and yet destructive path, something Brimson explores to the full as he taps at the darker side of all our minds.
