Summation of Chapter The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) student chapter is available for civil engineering students at The University of Mississippi (UM) who are interested in transportation. The idea for the founding of a transportation engineering society was prompted by Dr. Waheed Uddin and Ms. Lucy Phillips when they returned from the Deep South Institute of Transportation Engineers (DSITE) annual conference in Philadelphia, MS on February 8, 2001. An interest meeting was held in April of 2001 where ITE member Bob Mabry of the Mississippi Department of Transportation gave a presentation on roadway design and ITS, and urged the attending students to apply for a charter for an ITE chapter. An election was held, and 2001-2002 officers were elected to start the application process. The results were: Founder President- Lucy Phillips, Vice President- Justin Spinks, Secretary- Austin Banks, Treasurer- Audrey Stewart, and Faculty Advisor- Waheed Uddin. Following the application process, the chapter was recognized by the university and the national headquarters. The ITE chapter charter was presented on December 6, 2001. The chapter is included in the University of Mississippi listing of student organizations. The chapter web page was created in March of 2002. Since then, every year new chapter members are recruited and guest lecturers are invited in the Fall and Spring semesters. Elections are held each year in Spring semester to elect next year’s chapter officers and faculty advisor. Dr. Alex Cheng (Dean of Engineering and former Civil Engineering department head), Dr. Waheed Uddin (faculty advisor), Dr. Christopher Mullen (Interim Chair of Civil Engineering), and other faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department approve and support the activities of the ITE Student Chapter at the University of Mississippi. Student members are encouraged to participate in DSITE meetings and paper/annual report competitions every year. DSITE scholarships are announced to students every year. The chapter members and faculty of the civil engineering department appreciate this honor given to one or two student applicants every year at the University of Mississippi. The students who won these awards become very active in chapter activities and motivate other fellow students to participate. . 3

Chapter Meetings ITE chapter officer meetings are held every Wednesday every semester. Scholarships, activities, University of Mississippi Dean of student Affairs’ required training meetings for student organizations, and other events are discussed at this time. Faculty advisor meets with all officers in the beginning of each semester to discuss plans of activities for the whole semester. The ITE chapter officers also discussed deadlines that must be met such as the annual chapter report, scholarships, and other issues. We also discussed how we can get other students involved in ITE. We always look forward to having guest speakers from industry and government agencies to visit and give lectures because it gets others involved. Everyone always enjoys the lectures and leaves more informed than when they arrived. A formal spring meeting and the election of officers for the 2013-2014 academic years will be conducted in early April of 2013. 5
Invited Lectures The Spring ITE lecture event and chapter meeting was held on February 21, 2013 in Carrier Hall at 5:30PM. The lecture was given by both Bob Mabry and Jonathan Kiser. Jonathan Kiser Lectured on “Multi-modal diversity of Holland with Bicycling as a priority” and Bob Mabry spoke to the class about “Careers in Transportation Engineering”. Jonathan’s lecture on bicycle use in Holland was very interesting and is a great representation of what some cities in the USA are trying to pursue. Bob spoke about the importance of being involved in ITE, FE and professional licensure process, and talked to us about the DEEP SOUTH quiz bowl for the spring of 2013. The class also had a mock quiz bowl where prizes were handed out to the participants who answered a question right. In attendance for the spring lecture were ITE members, faculty members, graduate students, and CE 315 junior civil engineering students. The lecture was followed by an ITE chapter meeting where pizza and refreshments were served. Many students who attended this lecture became members of ITE at the meeting. The event was co-sponsored by the Department of Civil Engineering and Center for Advanced Infrastructure Technology (CAIT). The lectures were well received by all students in a packed classroom. Dr. Najjar, CE Department Chair also attended and participated in the meeting. Honors and Awards For the 2012-2013 school year Ole Miss had three recipients to receive DSITE scholarships. Those student recipients included Kyle Grantham, Courtney Cunningham, and Maddie Costello. The Ole Miss ITE student chapter is proud to recognize these fellow students and would like to thank DSITE and ITE International for their generous annual scholarship opportunity. From left: Dr. Waheed Uddin (Faculty Advisor), Courtney Campbell (Vice President), Kyle Grantham (President), Maddie Costello (Member), Dr. Najjar (Civil Engineering Department Chair) Dr. Waheed Uddin was honored with the 2011 Epps/Dart Excellence in Teaching Award by the Deep South ITE section. The award was presented by Mr. Kiser after the ITE lecture on Feb 21, 2013. 9
Activities and News The ITE Chapter officers attended several University mandated meetings throughout the school year. The first meeting was organized by the Associated Student Body, to appropriate funding for the various school organizations on campus. The second meeting that was University mandated was a training program for Risk Management of the student organizations on campus in early February. The attendees for this meeting were Kyle Grantham (President), John Richard Patterson (Vice President) and Dr. Waheed Uddin (Faculty Advisor). The Risk Management meeting expressed the importance of being professional, safe and handling the organization with respect and dignity to the University as well as the organization. The ITE officers and members are also actively involved with many of the other student organizations within the Ole Miss Engineering School. John Richard Patterson is the current ASCE Chapter President. Kyle Grantham and Courtney Cunningham are the current ASCE Chapter Secretary and Vice President. We are currently fabricating the mold to build our concrete canoe as well as fabricating the joints and members for the steel bridge. The majority of the ITE members will be attending the ASCE conference and competition in Baton Rouge, La on March 22-24. Dr. Uddin headed the University of Mississippi team as a member of the Mississippi State University led university consortium that won the national University Transportation Center (UTC) grant of US$ 6.9 million dollars from the USDOT-RITA for a period of four years from January 2012 to January 2016. Dr. Uddin is conducting two research projects under this grant at CAIT where four CE undergraduate students and ITE chapter members are contributing on economic competitiveness of global supply chain and flood disaster protection of transportation infrastructure.
