EMERALD BAY - THE TIDE A MESSAGE FROM YOUR COMMUNITY MANAGER Summer may feel rather different this year, but it’s nice to see the little folks of Emerald Bay enjoying modified camp and our residents enjoying the quieter-than-usual beach. Over the last few summers, we have been tackling the growing influx of guests on the beach. Although we have made some inroads, we hadn’t had much success until this year as Covid-19 emptied our beach and we were then able to implement the current wristband system. There are clearly some silver linings in today’s unfortunate circumstances. As a community, we may have prepared for natural disasters, but we certainly were not prepared for a worldwide pandemic. While the nation and world unite to confront a shared calamity, there are no easy solutions to the problem. There are no ready-tested plans or best practices to follow. However, with new challenges come new opportunities for growth and success. The pandemic is teaching us lessons in patience, compassion, tolerance, understanding, and providing us with a newfound appreciation for the little joys in life. With that in mind, I want to personally thank the Board for the extra load they have had to lift during these last few months, with special thanks to Board President Victor Assad for his tireless efforts and leadership. Making difficult and often unpopular decisions is never easy nor enjoyable. Leading in good times is one thing; leading in unprecedented bad times is quite another! A Forbes article recently stated, While experts are often the smartest people in the room, it’s far easier to be an expert than a leader. Experts live in a world of opinion. Leaders live in a world of decision. Experts live in a world of should, as in, “You should have done this.” Leaders live in a messy and imperfect world…. Leaders have to make decisions based on conflicting advice, difficult trade-offs and stubborn resistance, then have to accept responsibility and accountability. Experts, by contrast, can often go from one wrong assessment to the next without consequence. I thought this was a great insight into the difficulties Victor and the Board have faced. Regardless, the safety of the Bay’s residents and staff has guided the Board’s decision making and remains the number one priority. And so, what are we doing to keep you safe? The Board and staff have worked on modified re-openings, implementing worksite plans according to state and county guidance: Opened tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts, playgrounds, and pool complex, with modified capacity Provided beach wristbands for each household; removed half of the beach picnic tables and sanitized the remaining tables every morning; increased beach patrol; encouraged guests to park at their host’s home Modified Summer and Multi-Sports Camp Increased janitorial efforts, sanitizing common areas and high-touch points Ordered sanitizer stations, arriving soon, for the common areas Implemented an office appointment system and scheduled decal drive-through events Required face covering for all employees when six-foot social distancing cannot be achieved Increased communications via eblast, website (ebca.net and ebrecreation.com), and mailings Coordinated Board and Committee meetings via video/teleconference We are also working on plans to reinstate swim lessons and fitness classes. Additionally, the Board is considering an increase in the number of permitted guests at the beach, and it is continuing to seek guidance on lifting the moratorium on private events and other recreational activities. We are also moving along with previously budgeted Association projects. The Aesthetics Committee has been working on the pool fence and gate replacement, which was reviewed by the Architecture Committee and Board earlier this year. We hoped the work could be carried out while the pool was closed, but as with anything right now, there were unexpected delays. Work is expected to begin on June 29th, and we are working on a modified pool appointment schedule to allow our avid swimmers their daily swim. Watch for further updates soon. Finally, I want to note that we are always interested in hearing your thoughts and suggestions, now more than ever. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Association office – we are here to help. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy summer. Toni Hughes, Community Manager 4 Copyright 2020 Emerald Bay Community Association. Proprietary information; all rights reserved. 2ND QUARTER 2020
EMERALD BAY - THE TIDE A SAFETY MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOCAL EB PATROL OFFICER It pleases me to no end when I see Emerald Bay dogs playing on the beach or on the green. I saw one dog chasing a bird up and down the beach, not knowing that he would never catch it, but he was happy. I saw ten dogs all chasing a ball on the green twenty times and they wanted more. One time, Bailey (a well-loved pup from #130) went on a walk-about without her human’s permission. I knew exactly where to find her. I drove to the Main Beach and there sat Bailey under a picnic table. She was being fed scrap steak from the humans up above. I looked at her and said, “Bailey, you know better.” With that, Bailey got up, gave me the stink eye, and walked away. As she walked past me, she turned her head and winked. I swear I could see a smile on her face! One time I saw a coyote chasing a dog. I then chased the coyote. About 30 seconds later, the dog came back without the coyote. I don’t know what happened, but no one was hurt...well, I was quite winded. And then there was the time I picked up another dog on a walk-about. He jumped in the truck as if he owned it. He looked at me and I looked at him and I said, “Let’s go.” He rode shotgun for about forty minutes until his human finally called. I took him home and he gave me a few licks prior to exiting. The next day I saw him at the green surrounded by several other dogs. I know he was talking about his ride. I could go on and on, but I want to remind you that “Please” have an ID on your dog at all times and obey the dog rules and regulations. For as much fun as I have with them, I have to know where their home is. “Remember…always treat each other with respect and kindness.” Have a great summer, Patrick. EB Patrol DOGS ON THE BEACH WE LOVE YOUR PUPS! From Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekend, dogs are allowed on the beach during the following hours: But due to COVID-19, we can no longer hand out treats in the office. Anyone utilizing the beach must be wearing one of these wristbands, and guests must always be accompanied by a host resident. Wristbands will not be available for collection day-of. Vehicles must be equipped with a valid Emerald Bay decal to be granted access (no Fourth of July Guest Vehicles Passes will be issued this year). Guest vehicles which access the Bay prior to Fourth of July must park on the Member host’s property the day of the event. There will be no Association sponsored events, i.e. the Firefighters’ BBQ. 4th of July concert, and music stage. No set ups or stake outs will be permitted on the beach before dawn on Saturday, July 4th. EMERALD BAY - THE TIDE POLITE REMINDERS HIKERS AND BIKERS - TIPS FOR THE TRAILS With recent decline in outdoor activities and events due to the pandemic, many are heading to local trail- heads for fresh air. As our very own wilderness Gate 13 leads directly to these trails, we encourage you to take the proper precautions when venturing out. Check out these tips from OC Parks to help you stay safe: Hike with a friend or family member. The companionship in the great outdoors is fun and you can encourage one another to meet your fitness goals. Take plenty of drinking water. Leave stream, river and lake water for the park wildlife. Although it looks clean and refreshing, stream water can make you ill. Let someone back at home know where you are going and when you plan on returning. Take a mobile phone for emergencies only or to let them know you have returned safely. Don't walk off-trail. Cutting across switchbacks erodes the hillside and eventually destroys the trail. Plus, walking off-trail increases your chance of suffering an injury or getting lost. Keep an eye out for wildlife. Although rare, bob cats, mountain lions and snakes may be seen. Whenever you encounter wildlife on the trail, keep your distance, back away slowly and do not run. Report your sightings. Avoid Poison Oak. Learn to identify its shiny, three-leaf pattern and avoid touching it. If you touch poison oak, wash immediately with water and mild soap. Pat dry with a clean towel. Remember: Not all trails are dog-friendly. This is for the safety of your pet and for the safety of wildlife. PLEASE HELP MAINTAIN THE UNIQUE NATURE AND NEIGHBORLY SPIRIT OF EMERALD BAY BY CONSIDERATION OF THE FOLLOWING: Call in all of your guests, including ride-share and delivery apps (e.g. Uber, UberEats, etc.) to avoid denial of entry. Direct your guests/deliveries to enter at the Main Gate - provide directions/instructions. Request guests park at your residence before accompanying them to use the Bay’s facilities. Remind them of the parking rules. Avoid sharing your call-in code to limit access to unauthorized guests. Set up alerts on Dwelling Live to receive notifications each time a guest is added to your account. Purchase a transponder if you wish to use the ‘resident lane’ at Main Gate 2ND QUARTER 2020 7
EMERALD BAY - THE TIDE THE BENEFITS OF HAND WASHING We’ve all been told over and over again lately by health organizations, government agencies, friends, family, and a myriad of signage... “wash your hands!” But with other quicker and more convenient methods available, such as hand sanitizer, why should we opt for this old-fashioned routine? Well, for starters, there are limits to how well hand sanitizers disinfect. According to UCI Health, applying hand sanitizer may be easier, but even the ones with sufficient alcohol content (60% - 95%) cannot remove all types of bacteria and viruses. Furthermore, alcohol-free sanitizer (usually foam) is the least helpful in warding off germs and is not recommended by the CDC or the FDA. While hand sanitizers may work well in clinical settings, they do not clean thoroughly enough in work and community settings where people handle equipment or food. However, the lathering of hands and scrubbing thoroughly creates friction that helps lift and wash away dirt, grease, and microbes under running water. Hand sanitizer is also ineffective if too little is applied, or it is wiped off before it has dried completely. But let’s say the pandemic is over, let’s say we’ve found the cure for COVID-19 and the threat is gone. Should we continue to wash our hands at the rate we are now – after every store run, touch of a commonly used door handle, or handshake? Absolutely! The benefits of hand washing are far reaching and can make a huge impact world-wide. When taking the time to wash your hands frequently, you are not only protecting yourself from getting sick, you are avoiding spreading sickness to others. When fewer children get sick, school attendance improves – leading to higher graduation rates and better grades. When fewer infections are spread, less antibiotics are prescribed, consequently battling the rise in antibiotic resistance. There is truly a domino effect when you take the time to protect yourself and others against bacteria and viruses. So take another moment to review, because washing your hands could potentially save a life! 1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. 2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. 3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the chorus to “No Scrubs” by TLC twice. 4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. 5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. LETTER TO THE EDITOR During all the years I have been living in Emerald Bay I have seen only one other person pick up plastic or other trash from the beach, namely Spence McIntyre. All you numerous dog walkers or you teenagers would you consider doing a good deed and bend down and contribute? Please! Eberhard Neutz, EB 909 8 Copyright 2020 Emerald Bay Community Association. EMERALD BAY - THE TIDE DID YOU KNOW? THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE EMERALD GREEN TENNIS COURT Emerald Bay had some dedicated acreage within its tract maps which could be developed, provided that it was an asset to the community and the members whole-heartedly agreed to a 'change in the terrain.' In 1948, Fire Chief Victor Andrews (#25) and the Association President Larry Reynolds (#27) proposed a community tennis court on Lot E, a portion of Emerald Green Park. The two men brought along "T" Richardson (#12), an avid tennis player, and David Young (#17), a builder, to substantiate the need for a tennis court. The park was graced with many full-grown trees interspersed with sand dunes - no problem! David said they could move the sand around to elevate the tennis court, providing a bank to ward off tidal waters. There would be enough open space for picnics and concerts. The tennis court was completed in 1948, the result of a successful fundraising campaign, led by Victor Children were charged $1.60 and adults $2.00 for Andrews. Victor "extolled the virtues of a tennis court tennis court entry and $1.50 each for dinner. All this which would serve other purposes such as a dance to enjoy a six-piece orchestra for dancing, some floor, badminton court, and a place to have group singing of old favorites led by Vera Newcomb, committee meetings - in other words, a 'social center,' wearing a Gay Nineties costume, oh yes, and 5 1/2 a step toward a Club House." EMERALD BAY - THE TIDE CERT ALERT JOIN THE TEAM! “CERT” stands for Community Emergency Response Team. Our Emerald Bay team is a trained group of your friends and neighbors who are ready to respond here in Emerald Bay to a fire, earthquake, or other emergency. We are always looking for new volunteers, and our Emerald Bay team needs you! The team consists of several important components. There is a central command group who coordinates community efforts and maintains radio and other communications with local fire and emergency authorities. They are backed up by a medical team of almost 20 Emerald Bay doctors and nurses who have stored needed supplies and are ready to provide emergency medical care. Out in the neighborhoods, our zone volunteers are prepared to canvas Emerald Bay by going door-to-door to determine individual family needs in a crisis. In the event of an emergency, all three of these volunteer groups would activate and provide emergency services to all Emerald Bay residents. With only the PCH providing access to Emerald Bay from the outside, the community could easily be isolated during a catastrophe, and this team of dedicated neighbors would be vital for providing care to the community. When thinking about volunteering, many people have questions about what part they would play and whether they are a good match for the group. Here are a few of the questions I hear, and I hope the answers will encourage you to learn more and become a part of our team. HOW DO I FIT INTO THIS? WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
