EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE MEMORIALS Larry Jacobs, #324 Joan Mattingley, #512 Ruth MacRae, #1209 Spence McIntyre, #717 We are sad to report that Spence McIntyre passed away on September 16. Spence had recently celebrated his 80th birthday after a full life. He was born in 1940 in Toronto, Canada, but was a longtime resident of Emerald Bay. Through his life he enjoyed travel and the outdoors, and was an avid volunteer in many organizations. His health had been declining over the last several months, related to his cardiac amyloidosis. He made the decision to go into hospice care and passed away peacefully at home with family. Ardetta Boyd, #1016 Ardetta (Detta) Boyd died at Cherrywood Memory Care in McMinnville Oregon on June 29, 2020 from natural causes. She was born on May 27, 1928 in Haines, Oregon. She attended the University of Oregon where she majored in art, and also developed her strong interest in fashion and fashion design. She began painting at this time, and this was a passion that stayed with her for almost her entire life. Graduating with an art degree from the University of Oregon, she met and married Byron Barnes. They lived in Sacramento where their first two children, Linell and Greg, were born, and where Detta began to exhibit paintings at local galleries. After two years in England they returned to San Jose, where daughter Lauren was born. In 1960 the family moved to Pasadena. Detta threw herself into life in Pasadena, becoming president of the PTA, volunteering at the Pasadena Playhouse, and acquiring a group of friends that would last her entire life. Detta became very involved with The Gamble House and was one of its first docents. She and her co-workers helped establish its marvelously successful fundraising café and cookbook. In 1974 she and Byron divorced. In 1975 she married Dr. Robert (Bob) Boyd and they moved to San Marino where they enjoyed an expanding circle of friends, combined with the opportunity to travel widely and to explore the world. After Bob retired from his practice they moved from San Marino to Emerald Bay, Laguna Beach. Fourth of July gatherings in Emerald Bay were huge celebrations of family, food and watching fireworks up and down the coast from their wonderful deck. Detta lived a full and wonderful life and will forever be remembered by her family and friends. Detta is survived by her daughter Linell Nevius, Linell’s son Devon Nevius, his wife Leslie and their three boys, Oliver, Henry and David, by Linell’s son Paul Nevius and his wife Wendy Gao. Detta is also survived by her son Greg Barnes, his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, Danica and Spencer, and by Detta’s daughter Lauren Barnes. 4 Copyright 2020 Emerald Bay Community Association. EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE COMMUNITY RENOVATIONS Pool Complex The pool fence and gate replacement project is underway. Two new entry gates have been installed and the wall has been raised and is currently being plastered. The fence is being updated with Ipe wood and new lighting is being installed. The jacuzzi and baby pool have been resurfaced, and a dive pool cover was purchased to help conserve heat and reduce energy costs. We look forward to featuring the before and after photos in the next edition of the Tide. A huge thank you to our wonderful Aesthetics Committee! Landscaping The annual Association tree trimming was completed. This included the Eucalyptus along PCH and across from the office, various palm trees, and other species throughout the community. The EBCA portion of the annual weed abatement work (within the Bay) has been completed, alongside the Emerald Bay Service District’s exterior work. Maintenance staff have trimmed vegetation throughout the Bay, including Palm Circle, the office, and main tennis courts and Emerald Green tennis courts, in addition to all the bougainvillea at the beach. In coordination with Greg Salmeri, maintenance staff removed old plant material from the ravine and installed new planting. 8 Copyright 2020 Emerald Bay Community Association. EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOCAL EB PATROL OFFICER As we all know, circumstances can change at the drop of a hat or a wink of an eye - most times without warning. If you find yourself in a situation where help is needed, please know that you can always call Security. However, if you or someone else requires medical attention, be sure to call 911 prior to calling Security. That way the paramedics or police can start rolling to save precious time. Many of your Security Officers are retired Police Officers or Sheriffs. We can assess the situation and take appropriate action. We are all trained in First Aid and CPR along with identifying criminal activity. Let’s not forget our Fire Station in the Bay either, OCFA Station 11. Despite Station 11 being a reserve station, those men can get to a scene without hesitation or delay, providing immediate help. I suppose the bottom line is this: we need to look out for each other in the Bay. Be aware of your surroundings and help each other out when necessary. And if you’re down in the dumps or having a rough day, you can always count on a pet to put that smile back on your face! Enjoy the remainder of the summer, Patrick Veneski, EB Patrol EB Security: (949) 533-2112 For Emergencies, please dial 911. Events In Common Areas At their meeting on September 1, 2020, the EBCA Board eased restrictions on events in common areas and implemented the following regulations: • All reservation requests for private events in the common areas or common area facilities must be received no fewer than seven (7) days prior to the proposed event. • Events will be evaluated and approved or disapproved on a case-by-case basis by Association Staff or the Board, depending on the nature of the event. • A decision will be based on the following: 1. Current State and County orders and guidance regarding maximum group size, 2. Plans for maintaining physical distancing between attendees, and 3. Other considerations such as catering options using disposable food service items, pre-packaged meals for each attendee instead of buffet or family-style meals, etc. Event Applications can be found at ebrecreation.com/private-events/ or at ebca.net. Please direct all questions and applications to Brittney Hodges at bhodges@ebca.net. 10 Copyright 2020 Emerald Bay Community Association. Proprietary information; all rights reserved.
EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE POLITE REMINDERS Mini-Motorcycles As a polite reminder, please note that mini-motorcycles, also known as “pocket-bikes” or “mini-motos” are prohibited from being operated in Emerald Bay. This is for the safety of everyone due their size, causing them to be difficult to see. Citations will be issued for any observed violations. Street vs. Garage/Driveway Parking Please remember to park your vehicles in garages and driveways when possible. Doing so eases parking congestion and traffic on our narrow streets. Dogs Please do your neighbors a favor and remember to pick up any dog droppings left while on walks around the neighborhood! There are doggy bag stations available throughout the Bay. Dog hours on the beach: 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Commando & Similar Neighborhood Games There have been complaints in the community recently about teenagers playing “Commando” and other similar ‘hide-and- seek’ type neighborhood games. While playing the game, residents have reported that participants sometimes trespass on other Member’s property in order to hide behind bushes and walls. This behavior can startle unsuspecting residents who may get scared when they see or hear people hiding in their yards. Parents who are aware that their teenagers are playing these sorts of hide-and-seek games, please counsel your teens and remind them to keep the game play to the Association’s public areas during daylight hours and respect the property of others. Residents who observe Commando-participants trespassing where they shouldn’t be, please contact security so that the Association can follow up with the parents of any participant acting irresponsibly. 3RD QUARTER, 2020 11
EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE THE WATER BARREL Beach Safety Living so close to the water means you have a natural swimming pool right outside your door. With all the fun that the beach brings, it’s important to remember that knowledge is vital when it comes to ocean safety. Take a look at these beach safety tips provided by the Orange County Fire Authority and learn how to keep yourself, your loved ones, and your community safe. Beach Safety Tips • Ask the lifeguard about rip currents and other hazards. If in doubt, don’t go in the water! • Obey the posted warning signs and flags. • Check the weather, water, and surfing conditions. • If someone is in trouble, get help from a lifeguard or call 9-1-1. Swimming in the Ocean • Keep small children and inexperienced swimmers within reach. • Learn to swim before venturing out into the ocean. For more information on swim lessons in EB, see page 23. • Use boogie boards and surfboards with leashes and only use them in designated areas. • Choose to swim near a lifeguard and never swim alone. How to Survive a Rip Current • Remain calm and don’t fight the current. Swim horizontal to the beach to get out of the current. • If you can’t escape, tread water or float. • If you need assistance, call or wave for assistance. Dedicated to Spence McIntyre, who contributed greatly to many Water Barrel articles and the conservation of Emerald Bay’s beach. 12 Copyright 2020 Emerald Bay Community Association. EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE ANNUAL MEETING 2020 Members Meeting & Election Results This year’s Annual Meeting looked a little different as it was held via teleconference to account for new safety standards. A voting station was set up on the Community Center Patio for any last-minute submissions as Accurate Voting tallied the ballots. 318 votes were cast this year in the Board Election, representing a 59% turnout of the electorate. Members called in to the meeting and participated in a virtual member comment/live Q & A and President Victor Assad addressed COVID-19, the community projects this year and next, and the contributions of Board Members, volunteers, staff, and committees to the Emerald Bay community. Results of the Board election were announced prior to the close of the meeting. Members selected the following neighbors to represent them on the Board: Neel Grover #31 (3-year term of office) Harley Bassman #165 (3-year term of office) Congratulations to our new board members! They will join Victor Assad, Cheryl Doyle, Scott McCarter, Greg Salmeri, & Scott Swensen on the 2020-21 EBCA Board. The Board thanks all those who ran for office in the 2020-21 Board election and those whose generous gifts of service ended this year. Your 2020 - 2021 EBCA Board of Directors 3RD QUARTER, 2020 13

EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE NEW STAFF Coryn Henderson - Director of Office & Member Services Join us in welcoming Coryn to the EBCA office! A southern California native, Coryn grew up in San Pedro and is currently residing in Placentia with her husband Matt, 3-year- old son Logan, and two pups. Coryn is an avid reader and loves to settle down with a good book, especially after a busy day of working and caring for her tireless toddler! As the previous Office Manager for the California Academy of Physician Assistants, Coryn brings years of non-profit and operational experience to the team, along with a passion for working with people. After hearing about the open position, she felt it was the perfect fit and we couldn’t agree more. She looks forward to learning more about the Association and community, getting to know the residents, and settling into her new “work home.” Ken Ramsey - Patrol Ken joined our Security team part-time in June, so it’s likely you’ve already given him a wave while passing through the Main Gate! Ken has lived all over Orange County and southern California, enjoying the beach every chance he gets – usually by loading up his 1977 VW bus with electric bikes and hitting the coastal trails with his wife. Ken spent 29 years on the Cypress Police Department (15 years as a Sergeant) and retired in 2018. However, after two and a half years of retirement, he was missing the social engagement that came with work and decided to jump back in. Ken has proven to be a wonderful addition to the team. 16 Copyright 2020 Emerald Bay Community Association. Proprietary information; all rights reserved.
EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE Nick Mester - Main Gate Security Nick recently joined the Emerald Bay team not only in Security, but as a Station 11 Reserve Firefighter as well! Having graduated the Santa Ana College Fire Technology Program, he then moved on to complete both the Santa Ana College Fire Academy and the OCFA Reserve Fire Academy before coming to work in the Bay. Nick is constantly trying to find ways to stay active, whether it’s surfing, hiking with his two American Eskimo pups, or the physical aspect of firefighting. He also loves interacting with people and has a passion for assisting those in need and giving back to the community, so he’s thrilled to be working in a place where he can do all three. We can’t wait to see him in action! Chris Catalano - Patrol Another law enforcement retiree, Chris spent 30 years at the OC Sheriff’s Department. Having Patrolled the Bay during his time there and having worked with our Security Deputy Mike Robert- son, Chris was already familiar with the Bay and thrilled to join the team part-time when the opportunity was presented. Chris is a huge outdoorsman, from camping, hiking, and fishing, to a more casual houseboating trip in Lake Oroville with his wife and three kids. When he’s not outdoors, you can catch him watching a Bears or Cubs game, representing his Chicago family! 3RD QUARTER, 2020 17

EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE Letter to the Editor Within moments of Jim calling 911 and informing the Main Gate of my fall, first our Security Staff, and then our Fire Department were in our kitchen to assess, stabilize, and help me. Each and every one exhibited the highest degree of professionalism and expertise. And each executed their jobs using the personal qualities that don’t necessarily come with training, but make all the difference: extraordinary compassion, gentleness, kindness, and even humor. They made me feel relaxed and secure, knowing I was in the best of hands. Along with our Emerald Bay teams, the Laguna Beach Fire Dept.’s medics and an ambulance service also arrived. They deserve a shout out of appreciation as well. The “multi-agency” response and on-scene close coordination between the different entities was impressive. Jim and I never thought we would be on the receiving end of needing emergency help. For 26 years, from the days when the fire siren used to go off with piercing loudness at the Main Gate, calling our small children to the kitchen window to watch our Fire House responders come into the Bay in their cars and then go out in the fire truck, all within a 3 minute period, while the Main Gate guards opened the arm wide clearing the path for them, to today, when responses happen in an equally rapid and efficient but more muted way, we have been impressed with the rapid response of our first responders. We will be forever grateful for the remarkable people on our Security Staff and Fire Department who are such an integral and important part of our Emerald Bay Community, for their help on July 30th. As Jim and I have always said, our best neighbors and friends are right across the street. EMERALD BAY ~ THE TIDE RECREATION Summer Camp 2020 While most of this year has been filled with uncertainty, one thing was for sure: we had a blast at Emerald Bay Summer Camp 2020! Summer camp looked a bit different this year, with smaller group sizes and mask-clad counselors, but the spirit and fun remained! Most of our little campers took up a liking for roly-poly bugs and snails. Our older campers showed their love for gymnastics, soccer, and the beach. Children adapted quickly to the new normal of temperature checks at drop-off and everyone did their part to ensure a safe, happy, and healthy summer camp program! We are looking forward to next summer and all the excitement that summer camp brings. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported our program, despite the challenges COVID brought. ‘Til next summer! 22 Copyright 2020 Emerald Bay Community Association.
