Page 4 T h e T a t t l e r PRESIDENTS REPORT Presidents AGM Report 2020 It is once again my pleasure to present my report covering the last twelve months, my report does not cover any financial reporting I will leave that up to Dennis our treasurer. It has certainly been a challenging twelve months with Covid closing the RSA for two months, then only permitted to have table service which has made for a difficult time for staff. Covid also meant the cancellation of Poppy Day, Ride of Respect, ANZAC Day, and also affected many private functions that has affected our income. On a positive note, signage for the RSA has been increased with flags being displayed at the Harewood Road entrance and the fence coming into carpark. The outdoor area was completed and was well used over the warmer months a great asset for the RSA.. Vietnam Veteran’s day held on August 17th was again well supported by some 30 veterans thanks to Stu Rankin for again organising this event. Myself and Wendy attended the National Conference in Wellington held in October, I feel this is an important event in the RSA calendar to attend, a lot of networking occurs and it’s great to see that Papanui RSA is not the only RSA throughout NZ to have its challenges encouraging our members to use facilities. Armistice day was commemorated with two services one held at the Steam Scene. The second at 11.00am in the Memorial Gardens with a number of Veterans and RSA members attending. During the year three sports afternoons were held and although not sup- ported by many a lot of fun and laughter by those who did. Along with our continued entertainment on the 1st and 2nd Sundays of the month. Karaoke was held on the third Thursday of the month come along and enjoy. Entertainment proves to be a struggle to involve our membership, and your thoughts would be appreciated in general business.
Oct/Nov 2020 Page 5 Robbie Drew very generously donated his skills as an entertainer for the Mid-Winter Ball which was well attended. We have over 15 Community based organisations that continue to use the RSA for their monthly meeting’s many using the Canteen on these nights. It is encouraging to see the RSA being use regularly and it continues to be an added stream of revenue. To our numerous volunteers thank you, you are the strength of this RSA please remember that you don’t have to be on the executive to play a significant role in the RSA I thank all the staff office, bar, canteen and cleaners for their diligence and hard work over the past year they are the first point of contact and their warm welcome, positive and professional knowledge receives many positive comments. I would like to thank Ali Smith who continues to produce a high class publication of the Tattler and would appreciate interesting articles from you. I would like to acknowledge all that have supported our Veteran’s and their families. Welfare and remembrance remains our core RSA business. I thank the Executive for their commitment to ensuring that weekly working bees are held ensuring our grounds and RSA building are well maintained, raffles are run every week. I would like to acknowledge Lyn Anthony who has not sought re-election this year, Lyn’s contribution to the running of the RSA has been immense over eight years she has been on the Executive, every Saturday with the RSA Market, the Thursday night Bag raffle organising the raffle roister, entertainment. I move that the RSA present Lyn with a Life Membership do I have a seconder. Lyn please come forward.
Page 6 T h e T a t t l e r Financially the next trading year is going to be just as difficult as previous years and I can assure you all that we endeavour to control expenses and maximise our income. Finally Thank you to the members who continue to regularly support the RSA. You have a warm, friendly and pleasing environment where you can be safe and proud to bring your friends and guests. The future of Papanui RSA is in the hands of YOU the members. I look forward to your continued support as President. I now move that my report be accepted. Article provided by Frank Newsome Official Opening Ceremony The Papanui RSA will officially open its new premises at 55 Bellvue Ave on Saturday, Oct 31st 1992. The celebrations will be officiated by the Canterbury District RSA President, Frank Mugford, and it will take place before at least 120 specially invited guests and many of the club membership. The transformation of the former Telecom building into the new RSA has taken much of this year, and most of the work has been carried out voluntary. “We have spent $140.000 on interior refurbishment, but all the labour except for the specialist jobs has been completed by our own membership,” Ivan Ward, President of the Papanui RSA. The RSA paid $416,000 for the venue and then proceeded to convert the interior to an upmarket design including a double bar area, a large billiards room with two full-size tables, a main lounge which will hold up to 150, and a sports area which can be used for indoor bowls and darts, or can be the venue for a band and dancing. New Machines. Two new gaming machines have been installed, and in the near future the premises are likely to have a library. “We’ve had a collection of war history books for a while now and additionally have had some more books gifted to us and others given on permanent loan,” Mr Ward said. “We’ll be generally looking for good reading material of all descriptions,”
Oct/Nov 2020 Page 7 A kitchen area is also to be completed in the near future. The interior décor is rag-rolled in pastel hues and the carpet throughout is a bright red. The opening ceremony on Saturday will be held outside weather permitting, with speakers including Mr Mugford and the MP for Papanui Mike Moore. Ribbon Cutting The Rev Charlie Batterbury, formerly of St. Pauls Church, Harewood Road, will dedicate the commemorative plaque, and it is hoped the club’s oldest member, Jack Gregor of Fairhaven, will cut the ribbon, McGregor is 102.The afternoon would then continue with refreshments and conversation inside the new fully licensed building, Mr Ward said. And look at us now General Maintenance: We’d like to build up a register of people who are willing to attend to odd jobs around the club. Are you a woodworker, plumber, mechanic, etc? Let us know your skills, how we can best reach you, and when you are available. We’ll add you to our register to call on as required. Just 1 response to this request thanks to Colin Rae remember people many hands make light work. Veterans Support: Are you interested in being part of a group who visits members who are not well or who need some assistance. Please leave your name at the bar or office for Wendy. Papanui RSA Executive Monthly Meetings All Executive meetings are open to financial members to attend and raise matters of concern to them. It is your opportunity to question the Executive about any concerns you may have regarding your club and we are always receptive to new ideas you may have about the club’s future. The meetings are held on the second Monday of the month from February through to December at 5.00pm.
Page 8 T h e T a t t l e r “Waiting” Inspired by a painting by Graham Braddock that hung in the Waiouru Officer’s Mess, “Waiting” pays tribute to the history of the NZ Army from the NZ Wars to today. Many have sat on that very quiet platform under the eye of Mount Ruapehu after being dropped off by the duty driver and I have tried to recreate the scene in 1/6th scale with figures reflecting the Boer War/ WWI/WWII/Vietnam/Afghanistan.
Page 10 T h e T a t t l e r History of the Matariki Tu Rākau Grant The Government announced Matariki Tu Rākau on Anzac Day, 25 April 2018. The first tree plantings and local community-led celebrations began during Matariki (Māori New Year) 2018. The programme is one of a series of initiatives around the country to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of the First World War. There will be a number of Matariki Tu Rākau events between 2018 and 2020. Over the 3 years, Matariki Tu Rākau plantings will create a national trail of living salutes for service men and women of the Defence Force that complement our time-honoured war memorials. They will be places where whanau, communities, and visitors can visit in years to come to reflect and appreciate the work and sacrifices of our service people. In October of 2019, Te Uru Rākau (Forestry New Zealand) extended the commemorative nature of Matariki Tu Rākau to include other commemorative projects. For example, applications can be submitted to commemorate those who have demonstrated innovation, entrepreneurship, improved the lives of others, or exemplified selfless voluntary service. These can include Māori leaders, philanthropic contributors, writers, artists, and others. The Ministry for Primary Industries has funded Trees for Canterbury and CCC through their Matariki Tu Rakau Fund (Part of 1-Billion trees) to plant and establish 40,000 Kahikatea Trees in Cranford Basin over the next two years. On Saturday 10th October, the first 3600 Kahikatea will be planted by volunteers organised by Trees for Canterbury – with the remaining 36,400 planted in 2021. Planting and establishment will also be supported by Conservation Volunteers New Zealand (CVNZ) who have been funded by the Department of Conservation.
Oct/Nov 2020 Page 11 In terms of RSA involvement, the Matariki To Rakau fund was established to plant 350,000 native trees across NZ that recognises the 350,000 service men and women who have served overseas since the end WW1. Page 16 T h T h e e T a T a t t t t l l e e r r Photo: Lytton Volante with NZDF WO2 F and local Nurse. Considering the long term wellbeing of retuning Kiwi children in NZDF isolation facilities, many of whom have not been back to New Zealand in a while, site coordinator Lytton Volante thought about how the RSA could help. "The way we thought of it is if we can give them something they can take it away with them. That way it becomes a memento and a nice welcome home gift”. Spearheaded by Canterbury District RSA with support from the NZDF and the Warehouse they hope to roll this initiative out to all isolation facilities nation-wide. Lytton also hopes it will show the changing face of the RSA in reaching out to the wider community.
Oct/Nov 2020 Page 17 Financial Report for the 2019/2020 Financial Year This is a rundown on the finances for the 2019/2020 financial year. A report was given at the A.G.M. that was incorrect due to the Accountants releasing the draft financials two days prior to the A.G.M. and then releasing the correct details the next day. My summary to the A.G.M. was based on the draft copies. This last financial year was going OK until Covid 19 was thrust upon us. We lost 8 weeks trading, functions, training sessions and Anzac Day income. The Bar – Sales were down but we finished up with a surplus of $62,108. A good result. The Gaming Machines: The site rental was the same, but we finished up with a surplus $5,110. The Canteen – Sales were down $39,000, from last year but we finished up with a net surplus of $13,434 for the year – great result. Financial Performance – income was $82,617. Subscriptions and fundraising were down but our total income was $156,537 – up $40,000 from last year. Financial Performance – expenses – Depreciation amount to $48,030 which took the total expenses to $219,532 and that a deficit of $62,995. Last year the deficit was $88,136. Financial Position: Total Assets $940,741 Total Liabilities $350,634 Net Assets $590,107 My apologies for the A.G.M. mix up – Dennis Moffat - Treasurer

Page 20 T h T h e e T a T a t t t t l l e e r r A Little Poem for Seniors, so it hurts! There was a time not long times ago, when life was quite a blast. Now I fully understand about “Living in the Past” We used to go to weddings, football games and lunches. Now we go to funeral homes and after-funeral brunches. We used to go out dining and couldn’t get our fill. Now we ask for doggie bags, come home and take a pill. We used to often travel, to places near and far. Now we get sore asses from riding in the car. We used to go to night clubs, and drink a little booze, now we stay at home at night and watch the evening news. That, my friend is how life is, and now the tale is told. So, enjoy each day and live it up …. Before you’re too damned old!
