August 22, 2021 Written by THE Twenty-first Sunday in FA I T H F U L DISCIPLE Ordinary Time Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b | Eph 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32 | Jn 6:60-69 GROW AS A DISCIPLE | PRAY, STUDY, ENGAGE, SERVE Have you ever felt nervous in standing up for something, or in taking a position on an issue? Even when the stakes are not particularly high, like a classroom debate over an author’s meaning in her text or requesting that customer service fix a take-out order gone awry, it can be nerve-wracking for many of us to have this kind of engagement. It is especially difficult when we sense conflict. Why is that? Why do we care so much what others think of us? What about when the stakes are literally life or death? In today’s first reading, Joshua is imploring the people to decide which god they will serve, and he boldly proclaims: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” In the Gospel, some of Jesus’ disciples reject his teachings and drift back to “their former way of life.” Jesus asks the Twelve whether they, too, “want to leave.” Simon Peter responds with the rhetorical ques- tion, “Master, to whom [else] shall we go?” Like Joshua, he is bold in his own pronouncement: “You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Today’s readings encourage and exhort us to go “all in” when it comes to disciple- ship. The implication is clear: it matters not what others think of us, or what attraction they might hold for us to acquiesce to them. God alone is the source of life, and the truth. He offers us a way – it’s that simple. We simply must decide to serve him. GO EVANGELIZE PRAYER, INVITATION, WITNESS, ACCOMPANIMENT At times this commitment, this life of discipleship, is more difficult than other times. Faith is a personal and communal relationship with our Triune God, and just like our human relationships it requires attentiveness, and “[living] in love as Christ loved us.” Just as a spouse or roommate can annoy us – being messy, hearing the same joke over and over, and don’t get me started on who gets to control the remote! – we may get upset with God because our expec- tations are not met. But God is God, not “who we think God ought to be.” Therefore, today’s readings are an encouragement to remain steadfast when things are difficult, with St. Paul comparing the love of Jesus for the Church (all of us!) with the mutual love between a husband and wife. No one said it would be easy. Just as a good marriage requires communication, give-and- take, and large doses of forgiveness, so does our relationship with the Lord require prayer, confession, repentance, and thanksgiving. Getty Images/MachineHeadz ACTION Place Joshua’s words on your refrigerator this week: “Decide today whom you will serve … As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Brainstorm about how each member of your household can do that. 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | August 22, 2021 | parish.stbenedict.com | Page 3

SUNG VESPERS & VINO JOIN US FOR THE SOLEMN CELEBRATION OF VESPERS, FOLLOWED BY A LIGHT RECEPTION. This event is sponsored by the Young Adult Ministries of St. Benedict and St. Andrew Parish. Music provided by Schola Cantorum Benedicti What is Vespers? Vespers is part of The Liturgy of the hours, which is also known as The Divine Office. The Liturgy of the Hours is a prayer that takes place over the course of a day. The various parts of the day are marked by different prayers, each one known as an “hour”. Vespers is the penultimate hour and is celebrated at or near sunset. The service begins with a Lucenarium or Service of Light. This tradition has roots in the early church as the faithful would light their lamps as the sun began to set. The service continues with the praying of the Psalms. The Psalms are sung or recited by all gathered, followed be extended periods of silent prayer. Much like the readings at Mass, the psalmody changes with each day. The high point of Vespers is the Magnificat, which happens near the end of the service and is sung or recited in its entirety. DATES AND LOCATIONS 9.19.21 at 7:30pm | St. Benedict 2215 W. What is Elder Abuse? From the Domestic Violence Outreach Team of St Benedict Parish Elder abuse is the intentional or negligent mistreatment of an adult over the age of 60. Remember, survivors are strong, capable and perseverant. Help is out there, though, and it’s important for survivors to know they don’t have to tackle the healing process alone. Emotional: Inflicting mental anguish or distress through verbal or nonverbal acts such as threatening, intimidating or humiliating. Neglect: Failure to provide food, clothing, shelter, healthcare or protection. Financial: Illegal use, misuse or concealment of funds, property, assets or benefits for someone else’s gain. Abandonment: Desertion of a vulnerable adult. It’s difficult to know how prevalent elder abuse is because it frequently goes unreported. The World Health Organization says anywhere between 1 and 10 percent of seniors are affected. According to the National Council for Aging Care, only 1 in 24 cases are actually reported. This means even on the low end we’re talking about hundreds of thousands of American and Canadian seniors being abused each year. Because not all seniors are able to communicate incidents of abuse, it’s important that those close to them watch for warning signs. Here are five to look for from the Administration for Community Living: · Unexplained bruises, marks, broken bones or abrasions that could be indicative of physical abuse or any bruises or injuries to the breasts or genitalia · Withdrawal from previously enjoyed activities, sudden change in alertness or unusual depression · Sudden changes in financial situation · Poor hygiene, bedsores, unusual weight loss or unattended medical needs · Belittling, threats or frequent arguments between patient and caregiver · If you suspect an elderly loved one is being abused, report it to authorities. If the threat is immediate, call 911. Otherwise, call your local police department’s nonemergency line or contact your state’s Adult Protective Care Services. Find an APS office in your area. For an even more comprehensive and printable list of elder abuse signs, see 29 Signs of Elder Abuse. To learn more about domestic violence among seniors, start by reading “When Domestic Violence Happens Later in Life” or explore the National Clearinghouse for Abuse in Later Life (NCALL), www.ncall.org. - With thanks to domesticshelter.org 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | August 22, 2021 | parish.stbenedict.com | Page 9
