The SCIENCE DRIVING the SKA Open key questions in Astrophysics, Astrobiology and Fundamental Physics • Formation of the 1st galaxies in a dark Universe dominated by atomic gas • Evolution of the atomic gas and star formation till the current epoch • Strong Field Tests of Gravity Using Pulsars and Black Holes • Acceleration in the expansion of the Universe not understood yet • Habitable extrasolar planets (proto-planetary disks, biomarkers)
The SCIENCE DRIVING the SKA Open key questions in Astrophysics, Astrobiology and Fundamental Physics • Formation of the 1st galaxies in a dark Universe dominated by atomic gas • Evolution of the atomic gas and star formation till the current epoch • Strong Field Tests of Gravity Using Pulsars and Black Holes • Acceleration in the expansion of the Universe not understood yet • Habitable extrasolar planets (proto-planetary disks, biomarkers) Instrumentally: • Ultrafaint radio signals (MHz to GHz): different technologies • Large collecting area = Thousands of antennas equivalent to 1 km2 • High angular resolution: Interferometer, separated by thousands of kms • High precision timing measurements • High survey speed of large sky areas
The SKA Organisation • 2011: Establish SKA Organisation as legal entity • > 1000 scientists and engineers Credits: SKA Observatory • > 100 institutions > 20 countries 1 Observatory, 2 telescopes in 3 continents 14 Member countries: • Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, UK + Brasil, Ireland, Japan, Malta, Mexico, Poland, Russia, S. SKA Observatory SKA Observatory launched • Intergovernmental Organisation (IGO) established 15 Jan 2021 • First SKAO Council meeting on 3-4 Feb 2021: • Approved Initial Funding Schedule (21-22) • 6 Members (AUS, IT, NL, PT, ZA and UK) and 10 Observers (CA, CN, FR, DE, IN, KR, ES, SE, CH, JP) attended 1st SKA Council meeting Credits: SKA Observatory • Spanish delegation: Inmaculada Figueroa, Rafael Bachiller and Lourdes Verdes- Montenegro

SKA Observatory SKA Observatory launched Statement by Minister Pedro Duque after the celebration of the first SKA Council meeting: “España da la bienvenida a la creación del Observatorio Internacional SKA, que culmina un periodo de intensos estudios y diseños, y marca el comienzo de una nueva etapa en la cual se construirá uno de los telescopios más ambiciosos de la historia de la astronomía. Estamos orgullosos de haber contribuido a esta impresionante fase preparatoria, y ahora esperamos participar activamente en la construcción del Observatorio. Nuestra contribución al SKA estará basada en una comunidad científica fuerte, estratégicamente posicionada dentro del proyecto con la intención de jugar un papel importante en el desarrollo de la Ciencia Clave del SKA, y en una industria bien preparada para llevar a cabo los exigentes desarrollos que un proyecto de esta magnitud requiere.
