THE SJ VIBE Wednesday 31st March 2021 Edition 2, Volume 2 Principal’s Message As the St Joseph’s Community enters Holy Week, I consider and reflect on Pope Francis’ invitation when he said, “During this Holy Week, let us lift our eyes to the cross, in order to receive the grace of amazement.” I am most grateful to the families who have taken time to share their journey and their children. Most importantly, every child has lifted their eyes to let us (the staff) see into The official opening has been set for Tuesday 27th April at them. Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) I would like to acknowledge the Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) framework that our learners, staff and families have been introduced to this term. This research based framework was developed by George Sugai. The St Joseph’s staff, with the help of our leader Chrissy Edwards, have learnt about expected behaviours and how we can explicitly teach them. As part of our commitment to the implementation and success of this PBL framework, we wish to engage with parents in consultation and conversation. In a package that will be shared on Skoolbag on Thursday afternoon, we will explain how PBL works in the context of our classrooms. We will be sharing this with families with the intention that you will have conversations about it with your children at home. In our first “Community Conversation” (refer below) we intend to have a forum to gather perspectives and feedback from the larger group for reflection. PBL research shows that this framework has positive impact. I have seen firsthand how this approach enhances both family and school by creating a unified and collaborative approach to your child’s learning . This is part of my commitment to Family/School Partnerships. St Joseph’s Community Conversation No 1. On Wednesday 21st April at 6-7.30pm, we will engage in our first Community Conversation. We encourage families to RSVP by Monday 19th April on Try booking. Term One has flown and I am privileged to have engaged with families one to one. For that I am very grateful. We have been waiting on advice as to how the new Governance model from MACS will look different for St Joseph’s. This information will be shared with Principals at the end of April or beginning of May. This new model and changes to the Advisory Council has required some adaptations. St Joseph’s will engage in “Community Conversations” for the next 12 months to ensure that the family voice is invited, heard and connected to what’s happening at St Joseph’s. This MACS update will be shared with families at the Community Conversation. There will be three foci of this conversation: • Norms around Community Conversations- Reflections on Term One • PBL forum • Classroom Overviews - Year Levels, learning and teaching • Fundraising I hope that every child, parent/carer and staff member can take or make the time to create space between yourself and your life over this Easter season. I hope you can find a moment to spend time with your loved ones and your families, being present, living for now. Kindest regards Shelley Spirit of unity: Respect Courage Kindness

OTHER SCHOOL NEWS Environmental Education In Environmental Education students have been learning about waste from our lunch boxes. Thanks to Bunnings Werribee, we now have 1000 little worm friends that have come to live in our school worm farm. Students have been learning about what the worms can and can’t eat and our first lot of worm food monitors have been chosen to feed the worms each day. We have also fdasfdsafdsa been discovering all sorts of interesting facts about the lifecycle of worms. Do you remember the type of worms we have in our worm farm? Thank you to everyone who has donated Discovery Garden pots, I’m thrilled with the response. When it comes time to plant our school vegetable garden, the children will start growing these seeds to plant and eventually harvest. Some of the older students have come up with a bit of a brain teaser. How many Discovery garden pots do you think we have in our cupboard so far? Width 18 pots Depth 5 pots Height 5 pots RELIGIOUS EDUCATION On Friday 19th March, our school community celebrated the Feast Day of St Joseph. We started off with a whole school Liturgy that was streamed to families. The children made symbols of St Joseph’s and presented them during the Liturgy. Father Albert and Father Dong attended and spoke to our school captains, Patrick and Joseph in Year 6. We also supported fdasfdsafdsa Patrick in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday at St Andrew’s Church. We now look forward to Holy Week and Easter, our Official School Blessing (April 27th) and the Sacrament of First Holy Communion for Year 4s and 5s later in May. OTHER SCHOOL NEWS LET’S GET ACTIVE AND GIVE IT A GO! – THURSDAY SPORTS COMPETITIONS It’s been such an exciting term and, on most Thursdays, students have been provided with opportunities to participate in various sport competitions. Earlier this term we began with a skipping competition and we have gone on to have a soccer kicking shootout, hula hoop competition and last week we had many students participate in tossing some quoits. It has been fantastic to see so many students give sports a go and stay active, while they continue to use the equipment fdasfdsafdsaand participate in the various sports. We are looking forward to continue promoting physical activities and having lots of fun! NAPLAN The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will take place from Tuesday 11th May to Thursday 13th May. NAPLAN is not an event we want students to be worried about so preparation is completed as part of regular class work. Test readiness is discussed with students and strategies are provided to support them, with consideration of learners’ needs and adjustments. Year Three and Year Five students’ families will receive specific information regarding the assessments in the first few weeks back at school. WRAPPER FREE SCHOOL We are aiming to be a wrapper free school. We encourage a fruit/vege snack as a whole school at 10am. Please try to provide ample food in your child/children’s lunchboxes. ADMINISTRATION UPDATE Attendance - Skoolbag or voicemail If your child is absent from school you must ensure you communicate this with us. SKOOLBAG has an attendance eform which can be filled out and submitted direct to the office. Alternatively, please use the school phone number and select the attendance line option. When leaving a message please ensure you clearly state your child’s full name, class and the reason for their absence. We are required to have a valid reason for marking your child/children absent. Late arrivals process When arriving after 8.45am your child is marked absent. To ensure your child's attendance is marked accurately, we ask that students arriving after this time come into the front office via Fairhall Ave and sign in as a late arrival on the iPad in our Foyer. This is to ensure we account for all children. Your child will then need to enter the building to go to class from the reception area. Operoo Thank you to our families for your enthusiastic response to Operoo. Some families still need to verify their child’s medical information. We also encourage parents to check their details on Operoo. If you notice that your details are incorrect, such as your mobile number or email address, please edit the information in Operoo. If you are receiving an SMS or email for a child that is not yours, please email the school on enquires@sjwerribee.catholic.edu.au so we can rectify this immediately for you. Thanks to all our families for your support and patience with the implementation of this system. School Fees Thank you to all our families for being so patient with school fees this term. We have several options available to pay school fees including an EFT Machine at the school. Please keep up to date with fees to ensure we don’t have to contact debt recovery agencies. If you need to make an appointment for a fee plan for the remainder of the school year, please contact the office. CSEF CSEF forms are now due. If you haven’t returned your Camps, Sports and Excursions Funds form please do so ASAP. This is open to all families who have a Health Care Card or Pension Card. This card must be in the parent/guardian’s name. Scholastic We are excited to partner up with Scholastic Books. They will be taking online orders for our school to support that we are a cashless community. Spirit of unity: Respect Courage Kindness

I have been working in an after-school care environment for almost 6 years now. I am passionate about working with children and the most rewarding part of my job is teaching children how to handle big emotions. Religions and cultures of the world are an interest of mine and I love sharing part of my culture and learning different cultures. I love playing Uno, connect 4, origami, face painting and other arts and crafts activities with children. “Hi all! My name is Shanice and I am part of the Kelly Club team working in collaboration with St Joseph’s, helping to coordinate and run our before and after school program. My ambition is that the Bachelor degree will lead me to secondary teaching, allowing me to provide children and young adults with the skills to carry them through their future and potential further education. As I have worked in school aged care for just under 2 years, I have a wealth of experience working with children to create a fun and engaging program, aiming to create only the most memorable experiences.
