Keynote Speaker Dr. George Sugai: University of Connecticut Thursday, September 20, 2018 Grand Ballroom: 10:00-11:30 Professor George Sugai received his M.Ed. in 1974 and Ph.D. in 1980 at the University of Washington. His primary areas of interests are positive behavior support (PBS), systems change, personnel preparation, behavioral disorders, social skills instruction, behavioral consultation, behavioral assessment procedures, applied behavior analysis (ABA), and strategies for effective school-wide, classroom, and individual behavior management. Currently at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Sugai is Carole J. Neag Endowed Chair in Behavior Disorders and professor with tenure. He has taught graduate level special education courses in applied behavior analysis, emotional or behavioral disorders, behavioral consultation, social skills instruction, and classroom/behavior management. He is Research Scientist in the Center for Behavioral Education and Research in the Neag School of Education, which focuses on research and outreach activities related to promoting effective academic and social behavior supports. Sugai has presented at numerous local, national, and international conferences and professional meetings, and has served as advisor to the U.S. Departments of Education, Justice, and Health and Human Services. His international work includes projects in Jamaica, Cayman Islands, New Zealand, Netherlands, Australia, Spain, and Canada, and invitations to present in Japan, England, Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark.
Keynote Speaker Dr. Erica D. McCray: University of Florida Friday, September 21, 2018 Grand Ballroom: 8:30-9:30 Erica D. McCray is an Associate Professor in the School of Special Education, School Psychology, and Early Childhood Studies at the University of Florida. She earned her doctorate at the University of South Florida, Tampa. Dr. McCray’s experience as a special educator for students with behavioral and learning disabilities in elementary and middle school settings led to her interest in teacher quality and faculty development in the context of diversity. She has conducted studies with teachers, leaders, students, and education faculty. Dr. McCray is currently co-principal investigator of the CEEDAR Center, an Office of Special Education Programs funded technical assistance project.
Keynote Speaker Dia Jackson: American Institute for Research (AIR) Thursday, September 20, 2018 SE C: 1:30-2:45 Thursday, September 20, 2018 SE C: 3:15-4:30 Dia Jackson is a senior researcher at AIR. She provides technical assistance, coaching, and professional development to states and school districts in the areas of special education best practices and Response to Intervention. She is a professional development specialist in the Response to Intervention Personnel Development Project for New York State in the New York City region. Jackson also provides technical assistance and product development to the Center on Great Teachers and Leaders and the Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability, and Reform (CEEDAR) Center. In this role she provides leadership and expertise in best practices in special education.

Session #: T-2 Room: DR 1 Inclusive Post Survey Education and Pre-Employment Transition Services Prepares ID Student for SUCCESS: Maurice Williams: This session will provide information that will help attendees understand who students and families should connect with for Pre- ETS services while still in secondary education programs. You will also learn how to prepare and gain entrance in the IPSE program in TN and beyond. Session #: T-3 Room: DR 2 I Can Do It Myself: April Oliver: What are tasks boxes? Task boxes allow the student to feel that they can accomplish an activity with minimal to no adult guidance. In this session, I will give you ideas on building task boxes, provide examples and where to find the activities. Session #: T-8 Room: SE B Alternate Academic Diploma: Alison Gauld: The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) allows states to include in the graduation rate a diploma for students assessed on the alternate assessments that align to the state graduation requirements. The TDOE has developed the Alternate Academic Diploma policy and course requirements.

Students with disabilities are allowed to participate in the general education curriculum, where appropriate, regardless of whether this is in the general education classroom, special education classroom or in the community (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act [IDEA], 2004). Many professionals recommend community-based instruction as a strategy for
providing relevant learning opportunities that are anchored to everyday community contexts as a way for individuals with ID to learn (Kim& Dymond, 2010). Session #: F-13 Room: DR 2 The Overrepresentation of African American Males in Special Education and their Self-Esteem perceived by their Teachers: Dr. Dejuan Parker: This session will discuss several factors that contribute to the overrepresentation of African American males in special education which includes, but not limited to, the perceptions that scout has towards the black male, the absence of the African American male as a role model in the home and in the community, and bias procedures when it comes to referring and testing African American males for special education. Session #: F-14 Room: DR 3 Sensory Processing Integration for Children with Autism: Shawn Nolan: This session will provide a better understanding of how children with autism use their senses for processing information in their environment. You will learn some techniques of how to gain your student’s attention to improve their learning and coping skills.
