Welcome to Uppingham Community College Dear parents and carers, We are very excited about welcoming your sons and daughters into our school community. Starting secondary education can be a daunting prospect for young people and their parents, so we aim to make our transition activities as effective, informative and enjoyable as possible. We know from experience that students thrive at school when they feel happy and safe. Therefore we place great emphasis on the holistic development of our students. Working with students to help them become amazing young adults is just as important to us as the examination outcomes they leave here with. Many of the staff at UCC are parents themselves and we always ask ourselves ‘the parent test question’ – would I be happy with this for my own child? I strongly believe this guiding principle ensures we keep the best interests of our young people as our central focus and it provides us with a moral foundation for our decision making as a school. Uppingham Community College is a very successful school with an excellent reputation and I feel very privileged to be the Principal. I am passionate about ensuring that everything we do as a school is based upon our core principles of respect, honesty and kindness. I am very much looking forward to working with you throughout the next five years of your child’s education. Yours faithfully, Mr B Solly Principal London Road, Uppingham, Rutland, LE15 9TJ Tel : 01572 823631 e-mail : principal@ucc.rutland.sch.uk Principal : Ben Solly BSc NPQH Deputy Principals : William Brooks BSc, David Anderson BSc Assistant Principals : Paul Rhodes BA, Clare Duffy BA

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What does my child need to bring on the induction days in college? Just themselves and a pencil case! They need to wear their primary school uniform, and if they have PE on the timetable for the day – they can wear trainers. What happens on the induction days? Students will meet their form tutor and which students are in their form. They will do a tour around the school to help them start to navigate the building. They will also participate in some lessons and experience lunchtimes at UCC. My child has a Special Education Need, who should I speak to about this? Please contact Paula Norton at UCC to discuss your needs in more detail, Mrs Norton can be contacted on: Norton_p@ucc.rutland.sch.uk My child has a Social or Emotional Need, who should I speak to about this? See above. My child has a serious medical issue, who should I speak to about this? Please contact Helen O’Brien (Admissions & Attendance Officer) to discuss this. How do I organise school transport? Please see transport information at the back of this booklet. Where can I buy uniform from? We have two uniform stockists, one in Oakham and one in Uppingham. Please see the uniform information on the next few pages. How can I pay for lunch on the induction days? You will get a letter at the end of May/beginning of June with details of Wisepay (our online payment service) which will enable you to pay online for lunch on induction day (and also pay for a locker online). Alternatively, your child can bring a packed lunch if they would prefer. How do you allocate tutor groups? This is a complex task which relies on information received from the Primary Schools and information received from the students themselves. UCC aims to ensure that each tutor group is balanced in terms of boy/girl ratio and academic ability. We also try hard to ensure that each student is with at least one of their friends from primary school although this cannot always be possible. Why is my child not in a tutor group with their best friend? Whilst your child may be disappointed that they are not in a tutor group with their ‘best friend’ it may be that their teacher has advised that those children do not work well together. It might also be that the ‘best friend’ has not specified they want to be with your child. As difficult at this may be for your child, we do find that students make friends quickly and will relish the opportunity to meet new people. Are there lockers at UCC? We advise that all students hire a locker, for both the security of their possessions and also to avoid having to carry all their belongings around the school. The cost is £10 per year and more details will be sent out at the end of May/beginning of June.
PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR UCC will be sent to you at the end of May/beginning of June. It is a big change moving from primary to secondary school, for both children and parents. We have listed below our top five hints and tips to ensure the whole family are ready for the transition. 1. Talk about the changes with your child well in advance Ask your child what they are looking forward to, what they will miss about their old school and what they are worried about. Then you will have plenty of time to talk through any issues. 2. Encourage independence Is your child going to have to take a bus to school for the first time? Are they going to be walking to school on their own? Try and ensure they are comfortable with this new independence in advance of their first day of school. Are they able to walk to the local shop on their own? Walk to friends on their own? All of these activities will help build your child’s confidence in advance. 3. Help your child become more responsible Your child will have to organise him/herself far more than in primary school. They will have a two- week timetable so they won’t necessarily always have PE on a Thursday, for example. Ensure that during these last few months of primary school you encourage responsibility for their own belongings and time: get them into the habit of packing their bag every evening ensuring they have all the kit/books/homework they need for the next day. We actively discourage parents from bringing in forgotten PE kit, books, pencil cases etc, try and encourage responsibility now to ensure they are fully ready for UCC. If a student has forgotten their PE kit or homework they may face a consequence at school, a behaviour point or detention. But we believe this builds resilience and hopefully will encourage more organisation in the future. 4. Get your child ready to make new friends Whilst your child might be in a form group with a handful of familiar faces, there will also be a lot more people to get to know. This can be both daunting and exciting! Encourage them to make the first move, smile and look people in the eye. Encourage them to join extra-curricular clubs as this can be a great way to meet new people and make new friends. 5. Resilience, resilience, resilience Your child will hear this word a lot during their time at UCC. The Year 7 team will focus on building resilient students who are well prepared for the challenges ahead. Students need to understand that things might not always go their way, or that things won’t always be easy and straightforward and will be stressful at times. They also need to understand how to cope in these situations and this will be a key focus. We will be encouraging students to develop their independence in dealing with situations, as they arise, finding coping strategies, and discovering how they can use adults in a supportive way without expecting adults to ‘fix it’ for them. You can help them with this by: Encouraging your child to talk to the adults in school and ask for help. Encourage your child to find out what work they have missed, if they need to catch up on anything, if they have been absent from school. Allowing your child to make mistakes and to discuss with them what they learnt from it/what they could do differently next time. Helping your child to find strategies for improving a situation that hasn’t gone well. Encouraging your child to ‘fix’ their own situations. For example, if they have forgotten their PE kit, do not bring it in for them. Allow them to sort this out for themselves.
