A Message from Fr. Matt Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church. What we celebrate is that 50 days after Easter (the word Pentecost actually means 50) the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and the Blessed Mother in the Upper Room. That this event is called the “Birthday of the Church” shows to us its mission. On that day, the Apostles went from hiding together in a small room to going out into the world to tell the Good News of Jesus Christ. Memorial Day Mass On this day, the Church is shown not to be for itself, but for the world. It is only Monday, May 31 @ 9am when the Church is filled with the Holy Spirit and enters the world that it is born! What does that tell us about ourselves and our role in the life of the Church? St. Wendelin Church No noon Mass at MD Parish office is closed Have a Safe and Blessed Memorial Day! Thank you, K of C, for Veterans’ Flags! Earlier this week I got to spend some time away. I went to Delaware with my friend Fr. Tom. It wasn’t a long trip but it was good. If you’re anything like me, the first days of a vacation or retreat are a time of adjustment. That adjustment wasn’t relaxing for me. I was looking at my phone, even though I was right beside the ocean. I was thinking about and talking about things here. Only after a day or two could I turn away from me and see the surrounding beauty. It took some time for Mass & Confession Schedule This schedule is altered for Holy Days & Special Events me to look outward, but when I did, I felt peaceful and relaxed. I only had a few days, but I got where I needed to get. Out of my head, away from my Monday self concern. Then, I was living. Only then could I be “reborn” and refreshed. Mater Dolorosa Mass - Noon This is what Pentecost is telling us. When the Holy Spirit descended on Tuesday the Apostles, they realized that they didn’t have to be prisoners of self concern. St. Wendelin Mass - 8:00am They had someone concerned for them. They could stop looking inward, stop Wednesday watching their backs. They could be visible. They could seek others and share the St. Wendelin Mass - 10:00am Good News with them. They could come forth from their self-made prison. School-Only - If School is in remote They could be born into the world and for the world. They could live in this Spirit. learning status, Mass is canceled Mater Dolorosa Confession - 6:15-6:45pm Each of us has been given this very same Holy Spirit that descended upon the Mater Dolorosa Mass - 7:00pm Apostles! How do we know if we are living in the Spirit? It is a tough question but the answer is actually simple. Ask yourself, “What am I concerned about?” Are you Thursday a prisoner of self concern? Are you always watching your own back, perched and St. Wendelin Mass - 8:00am ready to pounce whenever you feel you’ve been treated unjustly? If that is you, Friday do you think that you are living in the Spirit? Because that is exactly the place that St. Joseph Mass - Noon this newly born Church departs from at Pentecost. Are you concerned that you Saturday didn’t fully and properly confess your sins? When you do that, your focus is on you. Mater Dolorosa Confession - 11:00-11:30am And that, too, is exactly the place that this newly born Church departs from St. Wendelin Confession - 11:00-11:30am at Pentecost. Do you want to live your life in the Spirit, like the newborn Church St. Joseph Confession - 11:45am-12:15pm we read about today? Turn your focus away from yourself. Trust that the Holy Spirit St. Wendelin Vigil Mass - 4:00pm has your back, and live! Mater Dolorosa Vigil Mass - 5:30pm Today we celebrate the birthday of the Church, the descent of the Holy Spirit that Sunday Masses turned a scared, worried, insular community into a force that changes the world. St. Wendelin - 7:00am The same Spirit is given to us, with the same mission, and the same prospects of Mater Dolorosa - 8:15am success! What it takes now is for us as Church, and each of us individually, to stop St. Joseph - 9:30am looking inward, questioning if we are good enough, and trusting that the Lord has St. Wendelin - 10:30am our backs, that He is good enough, and that He has a mission for us that is about more than just us. The Spirit is here! The Spirit is willing! Can you look out, see the Open Prayer Times wrap around Weekday potential, trust in the Spirit and live in Spirit? You sure can. Let’s do it! Masses, with churches available for quiet reflection: Happy Birthday Church! Let’s turn away from ourselves and get to work! > an hour after the Two 8am Masses Peace and Love, > an hour before the two Noon Masses Fr. Matt and the one 7pm Mass Page 2 Saint Clare of Assisi Parish May 23, 2021
