ORDER OF SERVICE Bagpipe Procession for Confirmands from the Church to the Chapel Voluntary Concerto in G Major Mvmt. I Bach/Ernst Opening Hymn 525 The Church’s One Foundation Aurelia (Hymn is found on page 15 of this booklet) The people standing, the Bishop says Bishop Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Bishop There is one Body and one Spirit; People There is one hope in God's call to us; Bishop One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; People One God and Father of all. Bishop The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Bishop Let us pray. The Collect of the Day O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your lovingkindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Collect for Juneteenth Almighty God, you rescued your people from slavery in Egypt, and throughout the ages you have never failed to hear the cries of the captives; We remember before you our sisters and brothers in Galveston, Texas who on this day received the glad tidings of their emancipation; Forgive us for the many grave sins that delayed that liberating word; Anoint us with your Spirit to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim the year of your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 2
The First Reading 1 Kings 19:1-15a Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow." Then he was afraid; he got up and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he left his servant there. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: "It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors." Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, "Get up and eat." He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the LORD came a second time, touched him, and said, "Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you." He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" He answered, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away." He said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" He answered, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away." Then the LORD said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus." Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 3
Psalm 22:18-27 Read in unison. 18 Be not far away, O LORD; you are my strength; hasten to help me. 19 Save me from the sword, my life from the power of the dog. 20 Save me from the lion's mouth, my wretched body from the horns of wild bulls. 21 I will declare your Name to my brethren; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. 22 Praise the LORD, you that fear him; stand in awe of him, O offspring of Israel; all you of Jacob's line, give glory. 23 For he does not despise nor abhor the poor in their poverty; neither does he hide his face from them; but when they cry to him he hears them. 24 My praise is of him in the great assembly; I will perform my vows in the presence of those who worship him. 25 The poor shall eat and be satisfied, and those who seek the LORD shall praise him: "May your heart live for ever!" 26 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall bow before him. 27 For kingship belongs to the LORD; he rules over the nations. The Second Reading Galatians 3:23-29 Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to the promise. 4
Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gospel Hymn Know Christ the Light St. David’s Radnor (Hymn is found on page 17 of this booklet) Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Gospel Luke 8:26-39 Jesus and his disciples arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me" -- for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. 5

Doxology Hymn 380, st. 3 Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Eucharistic Prayer A Bishop The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Bishop Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Bishop Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Then facing the Holy Table, the Bishop proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus S-129 Holy, Holy, Holy Lord Robert Powell Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious Father, in your infinite love you made us for yourself, and when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. 10
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat. This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 11

Confirmation in the Episcopal Church is a sacramental rite in which a baptized person makes a mature and public affirmation of the promises that are usually made at baptism by parents and godparents. After making these affirmations, a bishop in apostolic succession lays hands on the candidate and prays a prayer of confirmation: “Strengthen, O Lord, your servant with your holy spirit: empower him/her for your service; and sustain him/her all the days of his/her life. Amen.” The origin of Confirmation is found in the New Testament in the Gospel of John as well as the Acts of the Apostles: “Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for as yet he had fallen on none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of Christ Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 8:14-17 At St. David’s Episcopal Church we believe that Confirmation is an appropriate time for youth to take responsibility for their formation and spiritual journey. It is a time marked by deep exploration of the faith and how they can personally live into the mission of St. David’s Church to know God in Jesus Christ and to make Christ known to others. Those being confirmed as part of the eighth grade class have participated in classes, outreach opportunities, meetings with mentors, and have been involved in the life of the church. Although Confirmation is an appropriate time for youth to take responsibility for their spiritual formation, parents and mentors need to provide ongoing support for their child or confirmand’s spiritual life by setting a good example and remaining or getting involved in the life of St. David’s Church. As you know, “it takes a village to raise a child,” and we are honored to be involved in the spiritual life of your child and your family. Join us in the coming weeks, months, and years as we continue to build the Body of Christ, the Church, through your participation in regular worship, serving our community, caring for one another, and sharing the gifts and talents given to each of us by God. To learn more about staying involved at St. David’s Church please visit www.stdavidschurch.org or speak to one of our clergy members or to our Director of Youth Ministry, Elliot VanHoy. Since the inception of the program, PRMH has collected over 200 tons of tabs and over $170,000. They collect tabs instead of entire aluminum cans because there is a higher concentration of aluminum in the tab itself, so they can really add up! All funds go to support the families of seriously ill children staying at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House. Please use a refrigerator magnet to make sure the tabs are aluminum. Many current tabs, like those from pet food cans, are steel, rather than aluminum.
