Team members spent 20 hours or more continued on page 7 FSAE Michigan, Formula Student Germany and Formula Student East held in Hungary. Team members set off to design, build and test a small-scale Formula One-style racecar over the course of the school year in order to com- pete against 80 other teams in both static and dynamic events. During static events, judges evaluate the team’s knowledge of the car through engineering design and business pre- sentations. The dynamic events assess the physical capabilities of the car, more so how well the vehicle was designed and tested. This is accomplished through events such as accel- eration, endurance and fuel efficiency. The competition is point-based, in which teams earn points in both types of events and the winner is chosen based on who performed the best both on and off the race track. While the design of the vehicle is open-ended, FSAE requires teams to follow a vast set of rules in order to pass technical inspections and com- pete in the dynamic events. Though the FSAE competition is strict in this aspect, one of its greatest takeaways is that it allows students to experience many aspects of a real-world engi- neering project, from designing and testing to time and financial management.
