The PANDORA Project Paradigm for Novel Dynamic Oceanic Resource Assessments This project receives funding from the European Union‘s Horizon 2020 research and innvovation programme under the grant agreement No. 773713
What is the aim of PANDORA? Increase the sustainability of EU fisheries through improved fish stock assessments and management recommendations. To do this, we will... • provide new biological knowledge on fish and ecosystems, • build more robust tools to assess future fish stocks, • improve science-based advice to fisheries management, • and create „Pandora‘s Box of Tools“ for scientists and practitioners. 2
PANDORA Approach & Methods Collection of Co-framing of management questions new biological and and scenarios with ecological data regional stakeholders Development of online Training courses for tools for stock fishers, stock assessment and assessors and fisheries management scientists 6
How will you benefit from PANDORA? Who? Participation Get access to and up-take of Pandora’s Policy-makers and Box of Tools Provide input about regional fisheries managers developments in fish stock Adjustment of fishing exploitation to biology and ecology levels that ensure short/long term MSY Express management gaps and Be provided with new tools, training concerns for inclusion in courses, best-practice manuals European models and scenarios fisheries Transparency and more participatory Fisheries management Raised awareness about fish stock General status, ecosystems, food security public challenges and sustainability 7
We’d like your input! What are your main immediate and future management challenges, and do you think including more biology will help? 8
Challenges for assessments and management in the North Sea (What we believe is important) • Density dependent effects: Do we need new tools for reference point determination? • Why are some stocks not recovering to previous levels despite lower fishing mortalities? Can we expect major shifts in the distribution of stocks under climate change? Influence on reference points, future catch composition and the economy of fleets • Stock structure of North Sea cod: Can we do something for cod in the southern North Sea or is the further decrease a result of climate change? • How can we utilize data from the industry to improve assessments and are there possibilities for science - industry partnerships (e.g., new surveys)? • Are there alternatives to the current management of mixed fisheries? What are the economic and social consequences of such alternatives? What are the risk – reward trade- offs for target and bycatch stocks? Is it sufficient if we just manage the target stocks? • How important are food web interactions? Which interactions do really matter and can we cope with such interactions in management? 9
Challenges for assessments and management in the North Sea (What you believe is important) • Questionnaires are currently being developed and we would like to ask whether it is possible to distribute them among AC members by e-mail. • Filled in questionaires will be analysed to set priorities in the case study • Your opinion is important for us to ensure that the final products are helpful 10
