FEATURE WILL YOUR ESTATE BE SUBJECT TO UK INHERITANCE TAX? We spend years planning our finances for the run up to retirement, but sooner or later the emphasis must shift to planning for life in retirement. This is not just about generating a sustainable level of income after inflation, but about protecting our estates from the effects of Inheritance Tax. Inheritance Tax is the most punitive tax in the UK and normally applies to your world-wide estate, even whilst you live in Singapore.Yet, at the same time, it is often described as a voluntary tax. We don’t disagree. Join Martin Rimmer, Head of Tax for Select Investors, a Division of St. James’s Place (Singapore) Private Limited, to find out why, as he unpacks and simplifies this subject, and gives you his recommendations for your own succession planning. WEDNESDAY, 29 MAY 2019 Gilmour Room, Level 2, Singapore Cricket Club, Connaught Drive, Singapore 179681 The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances. SP ORTS Peter Schott is a longtime SCC Member who has been consistently LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD active in the Football Section. He represented the Club in First XI and Cosmo Leagues, was the Padanqiues (PADS) Captain, and served in different capacities on the Football Section committee and on the Soccer6s and Soccer7s tournaments’ organising committees. With his wide connections in the local and international soccer scene, Schott helped SCC establish contacts, build strong relationships and showcase the Club positively; he was instrumental in bringing in international football stars, including Andy Cole, Ray Palour, Nigel Winterbum, Alan Brazil, Lee Sharpe and Liam Brady, from 2011 to 2016. He also organised auctions and raised funds for Soccer6s, helping garner wide promotion and publicity for the SCC. Schott has also been the main driver for the Youth Football Home (YFH) in Phuket, Thailand - continuously finding new ways to raise funds for the children through PADS Calendars and Victorian Vodka competitions, and encouraging others to support the orphanage not only by providing resources but also by giving their time to visit the children regularly, engage with them, and ensure they are well-equipped for life after graduation. S P ORTS NEWS SCC’s Sports Persons of the Year 2019 This issue, we speak to our top athletes and find out a little more about them beyond their sporting achievements. SPORTS MAN OF THE YEAR: MATTHEW NGUI (BOWLS) • Singapore National Men’s Fours: Champion. • Singapore National Squad Men’s Singles League: Runner-up. • Singapore National Men’s Pairs : Semi-Finalist. • Asian Lawn Bowls Championship Men’s Fours, representing Singapore: Silver Why do you think Bowls is becoming more popular in Singapore? Lawn Bowls is a sport that can be played by most people, across gender, age and abilities. You might get a little less flexible later in life but you still can have the opportinity to participate in the sport at high levels, as long as you train and work at it. As such, in Singapore and elsewhere, people are beginning to appreciate this sport as something anyone can take up and get reasonably good at it. How has Bowls impacted your life? From a humble roll up, bowls has become a major part of my life. From getting me up and out of the house to train or play in competitions, it has also got me a new “family” in the bowling fraternity, with whom I spend a lot of time. Are there any similarities between Sports and the Arts? I think Sport and Art are the 2 most “human” of activities, as they feed into the human spirit and are basically “non-commercial” enterprises. Unless you’re a professional, for most of us, they both give us insights into ourselves and makes us, somehow, more “attuned” to our environment. It is, I think, not a mere coincidence that in Lawn Bowls, nomenclature such as “draw to the jack” or “follow the line” refer to drawing and visualising techniques in Art. I would like to thank Chai Hon Yoong, Yong Lew Foong, TQ Lim and Mary Lim for introducing me to SCC. Love my new family in the SCC Bowls Section, including the “young ones”. And I of course would need to thank my parents, Jimmy and Moira Ngui and my brother, Nick, for putting up with me as an artist and now "sportsman”! I think they worry where my next meal will come from. Finally but certainly not least, I need to thank Bowls Singapore and the National Squad who have supported me while playing for Singapore. SPORTS WOMAN OF THE YEAR: SHERMEEN LIM (BOWLS) • SCC Ladies’ Singles: Champion. • Singapore National Squad Ladies’ Singles League: Champion. • Singapore National Ladies’ Pairs: Runner-up • Singapore National Ladies’ Singles: Joint 3rd. • Asian Lawn Bowls Championship Ladies’ Singles, representing Singapore: Champion - Gold Medal. How does Bowls challenge you? Bowls is a sport that is simple yet intriguing, easy to pick up and yet a challenge to master. It is the ambiguity and freedom of expression that draws me in and kept me hypnotised for the better part of 10 years. At a beginner’s level, it could just be seen as a jack and a bowl, getting as close as possible as so defined in the objective of the game. And yet, since our bowl has natural bias (curves), there is a huge element of intuition and luck, or is it precision? Many sports are about precision, down the line, on the narrow fairway, sinking a three point shot, and in my first decade, I have spent the bulk of it pursuing this perfection. It starts off tangible, and you would chase after it, eager and excited; and when you come close to holding it, it slips right through your fingers. Indeed, many sandcastles have been built, of dreams and champions; and at one of the peaks, I have learnt that to be able is a gift. To be able to give (more), to be able to reach out (further), to be able to move forward (always). It is the gift of your imagination, and goes as far as you dare. So dream, give, and bask in the joy and wonder of the gift that you are. How would you encourage more people to try Bowls? Bowls is the most versatile and dynamic sport that tests both the mental and physical. It teaches the young about being a sport, how to win and ultimately about life and beyond. I believe that anyone who tries the sport at a social competitive level would learn something about themselves. And I would encourage everyone to give it a shot. Barefoot bowls and day carnivals would be the way to go, with cool prizes. I would like to give a huge shout out to SCC for all your faith and support all these years. Heartfelt appreciation and sincere thanks to the Bowls Section Members who have always been so endearing and loving, and for all our celebrations together. MAY / JUN 2019 THE PADANG 31
S PORTS NEWS SPORTS GIRL OF THE YEAR: JOY LIM (SQUASH) • National Junior Squash Championship 2018 - Girls U15 1st • SGSquash Junior Circuit 2018 1st leg – Girls U19 4th • SGSquash Junior Circuit 2018 2nd leg – Girls U19 3rd • NSL 2018 – Mens F Grade (Team) – 3rd • NSL 2018 – Ladies Div 1 (Team) – 4th • Challenge 2018 – Ladies Div 1 (Team) – 2nd • 10th ASEAN School Games 2018 (doubles) – Quarter Finalist • Technoform Lion City Junior Squash Open 2018 – Silver Event (Individual Girls U15) – 4th How did you feel when you won the National Junior Squash Champi- onship 2018 - Girls U15? I was of course very happy to win the title last year. I trained many days a week and it was great to see my hard work pay off. During the final match, I told myself to stay focused, not to rush to win the points and minimize the mistakes made in the court. Who is your sporting idol? I started playing squash with the mindset of just getting myself out of the house to exercise, to play with children my age. When I was getting better at the sport, I wanted to play to my potential. When asked about my sporting idol, I will say he is our Singapore’s first Olympic Gold Medallist, Joseph Schooling. Although we play a different sport, he has shown his fellow Singaporean athletes that it is possible to put ourselves at such an international podium. I admire his spirit, his belief towards his passion. He has inspired me to ‘dream big and reach for the stars’. How do you manage your time between family, friends, your studies and training? Juggling between studies and training is not an easy feat since I train almost every day. I need to find pockets of time to do my work before training and to complete them at the end of each day. However, through this journey, I have learnt to persevere, and to be more committed towards my work. I have also learnt to make sacrifices, as I prioritise between work and play. Nevertheless, I do not drown myself with work and squash only. I still spend time with my friends and watch my favourite television shows as a form of relaxation. SPORTS BOY OF THE YEAR: RUTVIK RAU (SQUASH) • Oncocare Singapore Junior open 2019: Champion (BU19) • Asean schools game 2019: Individual Champion (KL) • JC Lindsay Scottish Junior open 2019: Runner-up (BU19) • Asian Junior open 2019: 5th place • Asian ranking Top 5 (2019) • Asian Platinum event, Redtone KL Junior Open 2019: Semi-finalist What do you enjoy about squash? I actually started squash when I was 10 in India and I have been playing ever since then. I think one of the most enjoyable parts of the game for me was the mixture of the physical and mental aspect of the game. The highly demanding physical sport is not only tough on the body, but in order to play well, it is also crucial to have good composure and stability in the game. Another part i enjoy is the fast pace of the game and the need to have to continuously adapt to different situations and different circumstances. All players have different styles and a different approach is needed for each of them so what is very exciting for me is the process in which the game is played along with the changing plans I have to make throughout the matches. Another part is the culture around the game, something I would like to believe I have been able to experience first-hand at the Club. The friendly and open atmosphere always leads to very exciting and engaging training sessions and matches. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time in your sporting development? I am not very sure about how things would be in the next five years, but I definitely have strong hopes to continue playing at the level and further than I have been performing. I plan to play on the Professional Tour over the next year and would then see how that goes along. As a junior, the support was available but I think playing on the PSA tour would be a tough challenge and a rewarding experience for me. How can younger Members get involved in SCC events, activities and Club matters? I think for junior members the culture and environment matters a lot Personally, I was welcomed very well by most people in the Section and the warmth and comfort I received was something that encouraged me to be a part of the Club as much as possible. The Intersection activities and the Club nights play a vital role in building this friendly and homely feeling which encourages young Members to continue participating in the Club. 32 THE PADANG MAY / JUN2019 MAY/JUN 2019
S P ORTS NEWS Peter Schott SCC Lifetime Achievement Award 2019 recipient When did you start playing football? What was it about the sport that attracted you? Football is in your blood from an early age, It was the dominant sport at school and while I never envisaged a life as a professional footballer I simply enjoyed the atmosphere and teamwork. I played at the amateur level during my youth and I was fortunate to engage in the game during overseas visits and into my life as an expatriate in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Hong Kong & Singapore. The SCC Padang is a very special venue; it is Singapore's Wembley, and it is such a wonderful experience to play any sport in this impressive Asian arena. How would you describe your time at the SCC and your active involvement in the Football Section? The SCC is a unique Club - the management, the membership and the staff are all diverse individuals yet there is a bond of friendship and understanding that makes the SCC both distinctive and dynamic. I joined the Club in 1997 and became 'active' in the Football Section almost immediately; there was a lot of history and tradition in the Padantiques (and the age group was appropriate) my time based in Hong Kong. Henrik was a member of both HKFC so I signed up immediately. and SCC. I served on the Soccer 6s and 7s tournament committees and Sadly Henrik passed away before the official opening of the Captained the Pads for three years. I generally volunteered for orphanage.
