Foreword Heritage railways are amongst the most popular destinations for group trips. Whether it’s the ease of access, the abundance, the distinct variety or the nostalgia, itineraries that include a heritage railway or two are sure to be a winner with travellers. In addition to scenic journeys and brilliant locomotives, many of the railways and attractions offer activities for children, mouth-watering catering and fun theme days throughout the year. The brilliant thing about a train journey is that it can not only make up a part of your itinerary, it can also get you from one destination to another, killing two birds with one stone. Groups are always welcomed aboard the UK’s myriad heritage railways and they do their utmost to accommodate specific requirements of each group. Disabled access is common, as is an incentive for coach drivers and tour organisers. So if you want to discover Britain by winding through moors, mountains, forests, open countryside and coastlines, where there are no roads and where the vistas are both stunning and unique to the rail passenger, consider adding a heritage railway to your next trip. You won’t be disappointed! Steve Oates Chief Executive, Heritage Railway Association Heritage Railway Association 3

Railway Tours for Photographers Geoff Cooke, Managing Director of Geoff’s Trains Limited, explains his train photography tours Britain’s heritage railways are well known with superb photographs appearing in the local and international enthusiast media. However, it has proven difficult for both local and foreign photographers to experience them in a well-planned, comprehensive touring package. Geoff’s Travel Club, a division of Geoff’s Trains Ltd., has teamed up with Tanago Gmbh, a German specialist rail photography tour operator, to offer photographers from around the world a unique opportunity to pack a number of photo charters on appropriate railways into tours lasting between one and two weeks. The next tour will feature nine days of narrow gauge photographic charters in Wales. Some iconic narrow- gauge railways are included in a true photographer’s extravaganza. This will be followed early in 2021 with visits to some of the larger standard gauge railways in England, an opportunity to photograph big steam locomotives in scenic surroundings. More information can be found on the Geoff’s Trains website at www.geoffs-trains.com. 12 Heritage Railway Association

The railway's terminus is located at the Valley Gardens which was once the site of the Great Laxey Mine's Washing Floors. Passengers travel in a tiny carriage, hauled by a replica of one of the original steam engines, through the Island's only railway tunnel and along the line which once carried wagons loaded with the metal ores. At the Mines Yard terminus of the railway, a series of information boards explain the surviving mining features. The Laxey Wheel, the Lady Isabella, is just a short walk away from the terminus. Built in 1854 to pump floodwater from the mine, it is the largest working waterwheel in the world and is the Island's most visited tourist attraction. In 2006, the former Snaefell Mine waterwheel was restored to working order on the Valley Gardens. No other railway can boast of a waterwheel at each end! Please take a few minutes to look at the various pages of the website (www.laxeyminerailway.im) which explain the history of the Great Laxey Mine, the mine railway, how it was restored, its rolling stock and operating days and much more. The Links tab also offers you a path to our Facebook page with current photographs of work and events being carried out by the volunteers. The Great Laxey Mine Railway is owned by the Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust, a registered Manx Charity, which was formed in 1997 to promote the rich industrial and natural histories of Laxey Village and Lonan Parish. The railway is operated and maintained entirely by volunteers from the Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust. Heritage Railway Association 13
