J AN U ARY 13, 2021 V OL . 17, N O . 2 THE MESSENGER BREN TH AVEN CUMBE RLAN D PRES BYTE RIAN CHU RCH A welcoming community of Christian disciples seeking to love and serve God and neighbor 615- 373- 4826 www.br enthaven.or g GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANTS “Well done good and faithful servant,” from the 25th chapter of Matthew has been rolling around in my head for over a week now. I keep thinking of my friends, Lee Roy Satterwhite and Betty Murray. Talk about good and faith- ful servants. I’ve been guarding the Children’s Ministry for nearly 18 years now and my list of those who have giv- en, supported and participated in keeping that ministry going is countless. I’m just so thankful to all of you. Among the many supporters over the years, I counted Lee Roy and Betty among them. Even though they had no children in the program, that didn’t seem to matter. They gave of their talents as they could and always with much joy. And they became my friends. Lee Roy entered my life when my two boys were young. He and his lovely wife Dot sat behind us on Sunday mornings. My boys loved to look through their cartoon books during the sermons, Calvin & Hobbs and that funny cat, Garfield. Turns out Lee Roy was also a fan of Calvin & Hobbs and the three of them could become quite chatty about the topic on Sunday mornings. I reminded Lee Roy’s daughter Ame about this recently and asked who was more embarrassed at their chatter, me or her mother. She assured me it was her mother. Oh, what I wouldn’t give for one more day of seeing the three of them going over their comic books. But I see Lee Roy in so many places in this church where he gave extra to make sure the children had the supplies they needed and of course those pep- permint candies. And fearless Betty! If the church needed to get something done then it was going to get done. Period. Her love of the children spread over us like a warm blanket. She did her best to support every event, every fundraiser, every need. There was no children’s play or service or VBS she was going to miss. I thought hot dogs and pizza were the usual fare to a VBS meal; Betty introduced us to big casseroles of spaghetti and pepperoni. Huge hit. When the kids sold Brenthaven Christmas Ornaments for a fundraiser, there was Betty leading the charge and helping the children pack up the boxes. And greeting everyone at VBS, taking attendance, making sure the right t-shirt went to the right person, there was Betty. She guarded that front door to make sure no one who didn’t belong in the build- ing got past her. She set a standard that others now follow. And when my two brothers and sister passed, she al- ways made sure I received a special Christmas or birthday gift as if she were filling in for them. Her love was boundless. I’m going to miss my friends. I will cherish them in my heart forever. And I look around at so many of you who support and give of your time. I’m so thankful for each and every one of you. The future is bright, no matter the troubled times we currently find ourselves in. Brenthaven is full of “good and faithful servants.” I am truly thank- ful for your love and support. WHAT’S NEXT FOR BRENTAHVEN? That question, during this time, has such a negative connotation. As in, “What could possibly happen next?” But, it can also be read in a more positive light, such as, “Now that we have accomplished this, what is the next oppor- tunity we have before us?” That is the question many have been asking. You see, we have entered the final stretch of paying off the mortgage (the last year) and many want to know, “What’s next?” Pastor Kip would like to begin looking at this question and would like volunteers who would be willing and ex- cited about discerning the next phase for Brenthaven. Over the years, our focus has changed as the church has changed. From focusing on merging, to building, to being a presence in the community, to welcoming the home- less. But what is next? If you feel called to help with this process, please email or tell Pastor Kip. We cannot wait for the day we celebrate by burning the note, but on that day, we want to be able to say, “Here’s what’s next!”
