FALL 2021 August 2021 THE MEMORIAL PAPERS The Official Newsletter of Memorial United Methodist Church September 2021 FROM THE PASTOR by Pastor Gene Aiken Hey Memorial family! I am excited about where we are as a church and where we are headed. I wanted to share a few of those joys with you. Some are things that we have done and some are things that are coming soon. We had a successful and wonderful VBS this summer. It was great to be able to gather again for VBS with so many children. I can't say thank you enough to Katie Jeter and all of the volunteers who helped with VBS this year. I loved the outdoor worship that we celebrated over Memorial Day weekend. We gathered in the October 2021 field by the FLC and got to see many familiar faces and families gather for this time of worship. We are planning another outdoor service in October that will be led by the Men's Ministry and will hopefully have some food trucks so that we can all share a picnic meal together after the service. On August 15th we are going to have one service together to celebrate the start of the new school year. We will be blessing backpacks and handing out Bibles to the 3rd graders during the service. After the service we will be gathering in the gym for a fellowship meal that will be catered by Mutts BBQ! The Rock House renovation should be completed sometime in September and the church offices will be moving over there. The more exciting part is that the youth will be moving into the Social Hall building. They have sent out a wish list and at the time of this writing have received a little over $6000 towards their list and they are going to begin selling Memorial swag on Sunday mornings. 201 North Main Street, Greer, SC 29650 We have a busy fall schedule shaping up for the church and there is a positive momentum and feeling in the church. I encourage you to continue to pray for our church, the leaders, and the Office:864-877-0956|E-mail: gene@memorialgreer.com staff. I would love to see as many of you as possible on Sunday mornings. If you are still sharing in Pastoral Care Emergency Phone: 864-256-0975 worship with us online I would love to connect with you any way that we can. We are grateful for all the ways that God is working at Memorial.

Both circles will begin meeting again each month, and we will hold our first UMW-wide general meeting since December of 2019. The Afternoon and Lydia Fellowship Circle will be meeting on September 13 and October 11 at 2:30 in the Adult Sunday School classroom. The Magnolia Circle will be meeting September 16 and October 21 at 6:30 with meeting locations to be announced at a later date. For this project, we will collect items for The Period Project and will work to package these items for distribution. This program has very specific item requests, so UMW members will receive information about this from their circle chairs at a later date. This dinner will be an opportunity for us to enjoy a time of fellowship and service. Donations will be accepted to help pay for the meal with any surplus going to the UMW general budget. Building Committee youth The building committee, along with our contractor has been working on the RH since early this year. As a follow up to our last update it may look like things have slowed down, but they haven’t. Our committee has been very busy with decisions to make the RH a permanent fixture of our grounds and campus. The belief and mission of our committee was to assess, repair, modify and plan for a hundred-year structure that will be passed along to future parishioners of MUMC. This aligns with being good stewards of our campus, assets and funds. The current update includes the following: *modification of inside structures for a more open and inviting appeal *preparation for installation of new walls and rooms / work areas *shoring up and leveling of floors *complete removal of bathroom fixtures and contents *complete removal of the kitchen *preparation of new and updated electrical, utilities and technology (internet, security, etc.) *updating and implementing the HVAC system As we start to gear up for a new school year and the upcoming seasons, we could not be *new energy efficient windows have been installed more grateful for everyone who played a part in making it such a memorable summer for *new roof and exterior trim our youth! General Information General Information In May, Sarah Glenn was delighted to receive her wooden cross made by the Methodist Men when Adair Johnson and Harriet Johnson visited her. She was happy to reminisce about her many years at Memorial and catch up on recent events. She misses her home church very much. After her college graduation in the late 1940's, Sarah moved to Greer to teach school. Here she met Fred Glenn; they married in 1950. She joined Memorial where Fred had grown up, and they raised 3 children here-Fredda, Frankie and Bob. Through the years Sarah was extremely active in church life by teaching Sunday School, coaching women's softball and basketball teams, organizing and participating in youth and adult mission trips and enjoying the fellowship of the Seekers class. Sarah's home is now in North Charleston, near Fredda. She would love to hear from her Memorial friends. Her address is The Bridge at Charleston, 2590 Elms Plantation Boulevard, North Charleston, SC 29406. Member Spotlight Choosing Jud Johnson as our member spotlight was easy! He is always around!
