MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Tree Canada is a shining example of how a formerly government- funded organization can make the transition from government dependency to finding a niche within the private sector. Back in 1991, when the Hon. Frank Oberle created the Tree Canada Foundation to plant trees across Canada, nobody could have foreseen the vibrant stand-alone organization we have become today. Yet, here we are, independent and filling an important role as Canada’s Number One tree planting organization, planting and rehabilitating trees in urban areas and in other places where people live. In the intervening years, we have planted 77 million trees; we hold the Canadian Urban Forest Conference every second year; we manage a successful national program called Green Streets, which focuses on the health of urban trees and we have another program to green Canada’s school grounds. We created Canada’s first tree planting carbon protocol. Our ReLeaf program has been responsible for planting trees in many natural disaster areas, the most recent of which is the program to help alleviate the devastating effects of the mountain pine beetle. This past year, we were instrumental in working with M.P. Royal Galipeau to have National Tree Day declared in the House of Commons on a private member’s motion. Our hats go off to Royal and to all those M.P.s who voted with him in this almost-unanimous vote. These accomplishments would not be possible without the support of our many sponsors and supporters; a dedicated board with representation from coast to coast; our advisors who do a wonderful job in representing Tree Canada at dozens of events; and especially our hard working staff members in our headquarters who ensure smooth operations of our programs. I thank you all for your dedication, commitment and passion to making the organization as successful as it is today. Dorothy Dobbie Chair Cover Photo: TD Tree Days, Ottawa, Ont. TOP STORIES OF THE YEAR HELPING URBAN FORESTS WITH TD FIGHTING THE BEETLE — ONE PROVINCE AT A TIME In 2010-2011, Tree Canada and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) embarked Mountain Pine Beetle, a native insect that has destroyed pine forests in B.C., has jumped over on an ambitious project to deliver the Green Streets program, Canada’s only urban forest the Rockies and is now found in Alberta. Our Alberta Mountain Pine Beetle ReLeaf program was competition for municipalities, for the next three years. Over 100 municipalities applied in 2010 for created to provide funds to landowners, municipalities and homeowners to buy trees to replace a chance for their project to win funding. TOP STORIES OF THE YEAR — CONTINUED A DAY TO CALL OUR OWN — NATIONAL TREE DAY Canada has its own National Tree Day. On March 2, 2011 M.P.s voted on designating the Wednesday of National Forestry Week as National Tree Day. It was moving to hear several parliamentarians talk about their love of trees and how Canadians’ history and future are 1 entwined with our appreciation of forests. The motion was put forward by M.P. Royal Galipeau (Ottawa-Orléans), a big Tree Canada supporter who has been responsible (along with his family) for planting over 200,000 trees in 5 eastern Ontario. Tree Canada has been looking forward to this day for years. We started the trend with Maple Leaf Day — a day for all Canadians to celebrate trees promoted by our organization. But National Tree Day is recognized by the federal government which means we all can “officially” promote trees. The first National Tree Day was Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 — it will always be the Wednesday during National Forest Week, the third week in September. Tree Canada is excited to work with our partners and all Canadians to ensure our first year is excellent. Check out www.nationaltreeday.ca. 2 Photos: 1) M.P.
