The life of the school Week Ending: Friday 11th January 2019 Happy New Year to our Uryside Community. We trust you had a super Christmas holiday and wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. Mrs Dodd, Uryside Head Teacher I’d like to thank everyone for their lovely welcome to Uryside School. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first week and look forward to meeting everyone in the near future. Primary 1 Primary 1 have been busy making new year resolutions. They have picked something that they want to get better at in school this year. We will all be working hard to try and keep to them! Afternoon Nursery – Primary 2 All pupils in our afternoon nursery to Primary 2 will be receiving some African drumming instrumental sessions this term. It was a very noisy and active start to the sessions but some tremendous sounds were coming from our GP room on Thursday. The classes hope to share their experiences later this term. 1
Primary 5 After reading chapter one of the Iron Man by Ted Hughes, Primary 5 tried making their own Iron Man. By working together and following instructions, they were all very successful in creating their own models. Primary 3/4 and Primary 4/5 P3/4 and P4/5 have begun their dancing sessions in P.E. this term. They were working together to create different shapes and explored different movements. Primary 7 Today our Primary 7 pupils were given the opportunity to wear their leaver’s hoodies to school. This was a great opportunity to model this year’s design. Thank you to our Parent Forum for purchasing these for our P7 pupils, a nice keep-sake of their final year at Uryside. Hoodies may be worn on school trips, sports events and other special occasions when you will be notified by the school. 2
Primary 4/5 and P4 swimming A letter was distributed today in order to receive parental consent for all pupils in P4/5 and the P4 pupils in the P3/4 class to attend swimming lessons starting next Friday 18th January. A copy of the letter is available here. Please can you return these by Wednesday 16th January to your child’s class teacher. We ask for a small contribution of £3 per pupil to cover the cost of transporting the pupils, the remainder is funded by our Parent Forum. The remaining pupils from P4 will begin their swimming sessions from Friday 22nd February, more information to follow. Indoor Shoes for PE A reminder that all pupils should bring indoor shoes which they are required to change into before participating in PE lessons in our gym hall. This is for health and safety reasons. Please can the indoor shoes be named and have non-marking soles. Thank you. Wow Travel Tracker Next week will see our trial begin of the WOW Travel Tracker. A presentative from Living Streets will be speaking to the pupils at assembly next week. Uryside School has signed up to a Scottish Government supported scheme that awards pupils who travel actively to 3
school. Active travel includes walking, scooting, cycling and Park and Stride. Pupils who travel by bus can be encouraged to walk to the bus stop to earn their active points. Pupils log their daily journeys to school each day. Those that travel actively at least twice a week for a month earn WOW badges. The hope is that promoting active travel to school can eliminate some of the parking difficulties in our car park. More information on this can be found here. School Car Parking Please can we remind all parents to respect the disabled parking bays. We understand, especially during school events, that the school car park area can be very congested but these bays are for blue badge holders only. During drop off and pick up times, school transport and partner providers may use the bays to collect pupils. This has been identified as a safe pick up area for our pupils. The car park area is monitored by CCTV cameras, please report any dangerous incidents to the local police who have permission to access these images. Thank you.
