RECOGNISING, REWARDING & DEVELOPING EXTRAORDINARY YOUNG MARLBURIANS The foundation for inspiration FEB 2018 UPDATE
RECOGNISING, REWARDING & DEVELOPING EXTRAORDINARY YOUNG MARLBURIANS Getting Behind Marlborough's Top Talent. The Inspire Foundation is unique in New Zealand and is a registered charity dedicated to supporting Marlborough’s young talent. In November we were proud to launch The Inspire Foundation Marlborough at the ASB theatre. The Foundation has been set up as a charitable trust to discover exceptional young Marlburians who have the potential and desire to achieve excellence in their chosen field, and then rewarding them in such a way as to help them realise this potential. We were very lucky to have as our guest speaker, superstar Sophie Pascoe. Sophie is NZ’s most successful Paralympian, having won 9 Paralympic gold medals, 6 Paralympic Silver medals, 13 World Championship gold medals and 4 world records in her career so far. Sophie was an early recipient of a grant from the Canterbury branch of the Inspire Foundation. It was also our pleasure to recognise 3 of our future leaders who were selected to receive a grant from the Inspire Foundation. With talent, passion, dedication and discipline these individuals have aspired to greatness and their drive to keep reaching for the top is indeed, inspiring. If you know an outstanding 15-23-year-old Marlburian, with the drive and passion to make it to the top, whatever their discipline – please visit marlbourough.inspirefoundation.co.nz and apply for the next round of grants. Visit our website marlborough.inspirefoundation.co.nz MARK DAVIS and don’t hesitate to contact us to get Chairman Inspire Foundation Marlborough involved.

Inspirational stuff as new Foundation launched in Marlborough Swimming champion Sophie Pascoe speaks at the launch of the Inspire Foundation Marlborough at the ASB Theatre on Thursday. It was hard not to be inspired in several ways during the announcement of a new venture in Blenheim on Thursday. The Inspire Foundation Marlborough, a registered charity dedicated to supporting the province’s young talent, was launched at the ASB Theatre. Inspirational messages were delivered by the Foundation’s chairman, Mark Davis, guest speaker and Olympian Sophie Pascoe, plus the first three recipients of grants from the new organisation - Olivia Sheat, Quinn Udy and Liv Bishop. Davis underlined the Foundation’s stated ambition of assisting young talented Marlburians, in any field, to achieve their personal goals and develop their leadership skills. They will provide funding, training and development courses, mentoring and support for the grantees. His message was reinforced by Inspire Foundation Canterbury chairman Paul Wright, who along with Bob Davidson, began the concept in Christchurch six years ago. Since then nearly 200 young people have been given grants, including Christchurch-based ballet dancer Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson, who has strong links with Marlborough. He spoke via video to the gathering, underlining the benefits he had gained from the Inspire support. Pascoe, this country’s most successful Paralympic athlete, delivered an emotional address. With her father in the audience for the first time, she outlined the ups and downs of her career, detailing the battles she and coach Roly Crichton have faced and overcome. She also spoke of the benefits When I first became involved [the Foundation] gave me confidence. I was in a room full of other grantees that weren’t just sporting recipients. There were people I was completely in awe of ... at the end of the day every grantee is an inspiration for others. ~ Sophie Pascoe,
she has gained as one of the earliest recipients of Inspire Foundation Canterbury grants. Later she was joined by long-term coach Crichton who added his unique view of their partnership. Pascoe said she was grateful for the early support she had been given by the Foundation and excited to see that it had been extended to Marlborough. “When I first became involved [the Foundation] gave me confidence. I was in a room full of other grantees that weren’t just sporting recipients. There were people I was completely in awe of ... at the end of the day every grantee is an inspiration for others. “For it now to be coming to Blenheim shows that [the region] is really passionate about helping people. And it’s not just about the money, there is more value in the relationships, that’s what the Foundation is about. They help in so many other ways.” The first three recipients of Marlborough grants have all enjoyed outstanding recent success in their chosen field. Sheat, 23, is one of the country’s most promising opera singers, being named as a Dame Malvina Major Scholar for 2017. Udy, who represented New Zealand at the world junior squash championships, will further his career as part of a United States college team, while cross country mountain biker Bishop raced for New Zealand in Europe and competed at the world champs. Davis said there had been a strong local response to the launch. “Everybody I talked to in the room on Thursday just thought ‘wow, that was cool’ ... especially when the young people told their stories. “What I liked about the Foundation when I first saw it was the fact that people can apply for and get a grant, but it didn’t have to be just once, they can get it every year if they keep achieving their goals. Making their dreams become a reality.” Davis also stressed the fact that, as the list of grantees lengthened, a network of support was established around each recipient. “Over time, It becomes a bit of a family.” The Inspire Foundation grants funds to young, eligible people who demonstrate talent, ability or potential in any academic, sporting, scientific, artistic, design, musical, technological, entrepreneurial, community or related field. Criteria for grant applicants are relatively simple. Applications must be from a young talented individual involved in an event, project, training programme, item or initiative; they must be aged between 15 and 23 years of age inclusive, at January 31 of the year in which the application is made; applicants must have been resident in the Marlborough region for three years prior to the application date and must be a New Zealand citizen or have had residency in this country for at least five years. The Foundation grants funds twice a year and successful applicants may apply for further grants each year. ~ Peter Jones - Marlborough Express
