THE EUROPEAN GAMES The European Games are a multisport event for the elite athletes of Europe, which takes place every four years. The idea to organise European Games has been launched even before the creation of the Association, but then abandoned. It was resumed by the EOC, whose project was initiated at the 2007 General Assembly in Valencia (ESP), where it was agreed to conduct a feasibility study. After five years, during which the matter was analysed and discussed with other major stakeholders, at their 2012 General Assembly in Rome the majority of the European NOCs voted to go ahead with the European Games. Azerbaijan’s invitation to host in Baku the 2015 inaugural European Games was accepted. The sports programme for the Baku 2015 included 20 sports and welcomed some Krakow & Malopolska region 7’000 athletes. 2023 The 2nd European Games took place in Minsk from 21 to 30 June 2019. About 4,000 athletes participated at the multisport event. 3rd EUROPEAN GAMES Krakow and Malopolska region (POL) will host the 3rd edition in 2023. 75

THE EYOF The European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) is the top multisport event for young European athletes between the ages of 14 and 18. There are both a winter and summer edition, which take place in two-year cycles, in odd years. In 1990, on the initiative of their President Dr. Jacques Rogge, the EOC launched the event under the name “European Youth Olympic Days” (EYOD), now EYOF. Approximately 3,600 participants take part in the summer Festivals, and around 1,600 at the winter events. The EYOF have become one of the best gateway for young promising athletes to Olympic Games. Since they were launched with the summer edition in 1991 in Brussels (BEL), the EYOFs were staged successively in 1993 in Aosta (ITA) and in Valkenswaard (NED); 1995 in Andorra-la Vella (AND) and in Bath (GBR); 1997 in Sundsvall (SWE) and in Lisbon (POR); 1999 in Poprad Tatry (SVK), Esbjerg (DEN), 2001 in Vuokatti (FIN) and Murcia (ESP). In 2003 the EYOF were hosted in Bled (SLO) and Paris (FRA). Monthey (SUI) and Lignano Sabbiadoro (ITA) organised the 2005 editions. The 2007 edition took place in Jaca (ESP) and Belgrade (SRB), whilst those for 2009 were held in Slask-Beskidy (POL) and Tampere (FIN). In 2011 they were held in Liberec (CZE) and Trabzon (TUR). In 2013 Brasov (ROU) and Utrecht (NED). In 2015 Vorarlberg (AUT)/ Liechtenstein and Tbilisi (GEO). In 2017 Erzurum (TUR) and Györ (HUN). In 2019 Sarajevo & East Sarajevo (BIH) and Baku (AZE). The 2021 organisers will be: Vuokatti (FIN) for the winter event. To avoid a clash of dates with the rescheduled Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the summer edition in Banska Bystrica (SVK) will be held in 2022. The 2023 organizers will be: Friuli Venezia Giulia (ITA) winter. Maribor (SLO) summer. In 2025, Georgia will host the winter edition in Borjomi & Bakuriani while Brno (CZE) will hold the summer event. 79

THE GSSE The Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) are a multi sports event reserved for the athletes from the countries of the European continent with less than one million inhabitants. Upon initiative by the NOC of Malta, in 1985 the Association launched the first edition of GSSE which was organised in San Marino with the participation of teams from 8 countries: Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and San Marino. Since then, they have taken place regularly every two years, with growing success. In 2009, Montenegro became the 9th member country. The second cycle games were organised in Monaco (1987), then in Cyprus (1989), Andorra (1991), Malta (1993), Luxembourg (1995), Iceland (1997), Liechtenstein (1999), San Marino (2001), then again Malta (2003), Andorra (2005), Monte Carlo (2007), Cyprus (2009), Liechtenstein (2011), Luxembourg (2013), Iceland (2015), San Marino (2017) and Montenegro (2019). Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the next edition will be in Malta in 2023. 83
