John Blakeman Sr. came to Canada from England in 1913 and rented a butcher shop in 1914. John Blakeman Sr. was the only butcher west of Okotoks at the time, delivering fresh meat in the cooler weather, or corned beef in the summer, as there was no refrigeration. The building was burnt down in about 1917, and he operated out of the Black Diamond General store for a time. This current building was constructed by John Blakeman Sr. in 1928 to house his butcher shop and residence. During his time in Black Diamond, John served as Black Diamond’s first mayor. He operated his butcher shop here until his retirement in 1934 and then returned to England in 1935. After John’s retirement, the building was then converted to Tina Rust’s Beauty Shop, before being used as a residence for many years. Blakeman's Butcher Shop Following that, the building was converted back into a business, this time a liquor store, then later a café. The building is currently The Westwood café.

Danielle is perhaps best known as a singer/songwriter and has been working behind-the-scenes in the Alberta film industry. Danielle drew upon her film production experience and contacts in designing her store, creating a truly unique space that honours the natural beauty of the historic church building that Enlightened Herb Cannabis calls home. Creative elements such as a magical sculpture installation, an antique church pew seating area, and custom stained-glass windows make this store a true “destination location” for locals and tourists alike. The second-hand antique décor gives the space a warm, welcoming feel that perfectly complements the surrounding boutique shops and art galleries that Black Diamond is known for.
