Aims This policy is to ensure the ongoing education of Campion School pupils under unusual circumstances. This policy covers closures that could happen at any time and the provision of ongoing education of pupils who cannot be in school but are able to continue with their education while the school remains fully open. • This remote learning policy for staff aims to: • Ensure consistency in the approach to remote learning for pupils who aren’t in school • Set out expectations for all members of the school community with regards to remote learning • Provide appropriate guidelines for data protection Preparing for Remote Learning We would expect that many of the steps below should already be in place with most staff within The Campion School. We would expect that there will be future benefits to putting these plans into place. The Campion School will be proactive in ensuring that: • Staff have access to Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Doddle and SAM Learning and ensure all classes are configured. • Pupils within classes have access to the relevant Moodle and Teams classes • Pupils in years 7 and 12 will receive an induction in how to use Moodle. Years 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 will continue to use the platforms as they did in the previous academic year. • Staff are familiar with the main functions of Moodle and Microsoft Teams • Staff have the ability to host a Teams Meetings and/or produce video demonstrations using Loom or uploaded to The Campion School private YouTube channel. • Parents and pupils are made aware in advance of the arrangements in place for the continuity of education, through student guides. 2
2. Roles and responsibilities Remote Learning at the Campion School is overseen by the Deputy Headteacher for Teaching and Learning, the Assistant Headteacher with responsibilities for Remote Learning and the Remote Learning Team with responsibilities for Moodle, Doddle, Microsoft Teams and SAM learning. This will be supported by the Pastoral Heads of Year, Subject Leaders, Teachers and Teaching Assistants All staff should ensure that they: • Have received appropriate training and can use the designated school platforms. • That their computer-based teaching resources are available outside of school • That they have access to key resources not available online at home e.g. key textbooks • Are using their school laptop and have ensured that necessary updates have been made so that they can access and use the designated school platforms. 2.1 Teachers If staff are unable to work for any reason during this time, for example due to sickness or caring for a dependent, they should report this using the normal absence procedure. When providing remote learning, teachers are responsible for: • Setting work for their classes that is equivalent to the length of their lesson • Setting work in advance of the lesson • Setting work that all students can access • Work must be uploaded to Moodle, but can sign post students to use alternative platforms • Setting assignments in line with The Campion School Assessment Policy. In context of remote learning, assignments can be uploaded to Moodle and staff must provide timely and helpful feedback. • Assessing student knowledge though low stake quizzes via Moodle and/or SAM learning • Providing a channel for direct contact with students via the messaging function on Moodle • Providing some teacher-student contact through either live lesson, using of Microsoft Teams, or pre- recorded video demonstrations. • Referring lack of student engagement to Subject Leader and Head of Year to ensure early intervention. 2.2 Teaching assistants If teaching assistants are unable to work for any reason during this time, for example due to sickness or caring for a dependent, they should report this using the normal absence procedure When assisting with remote learning, teaching assistants are responsible for: • Providing support using Microsoft Teams and/or Moodle • Maintain the learning support classes on Moodle. 2.3 Subject leads Alongside their teaching responsibilities, subject leads are responsible for: 3
• Ensure that their department provide a well-planned curriculum sequence that is appropriate for periods of distance learning, making use of high quality online and offline resources, and teaching videos. • Ensure that their department sets work so that pupils have meaningful and ambitious work each day that they would have a timetabled lesson. • Oversee the setting of assignments and monitor the quality of feedback. 2.4 Designated safeguarding lead For the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead, please refer to The Campion School Safeguarding and Child Protection policy, including COVID-19 Amendments. 2.5 IT staff IT staff are responsible for: • Fixing technical issues with designated learning platforms. • Helping staff and parents with any technical issues they’re experiencing, including the resetting of student passwords. • Reviewing the security of remote learning systems and flagging any data protection breaches to the data protection officer • Providing continuity with the IT Helpdesk service. 2.6 Pupils and parents Staff can expect pupils learning remotely to: • Be contactable during the school day – although it is considered they may not always be in front of a device the entire time and an understanding that devices may be shared amongst family members. • Complete work to the deadline set by teachers • Seek help if they need it, from teachers or teaching assistants using the Moodle messaging facility. • Alert teachers if they’re not able to complete work using the Moodle messaging facility. • Attend live taught lessons where they have been scheduled using Microsoft Teams and adhere to the school’s behaviour policy. Staff can expect parents with children learning remotely to: • Make the school aware if their child is sick or otherwise can’t complete work • Consult the Online Platform Guide to attempt to resolve any issues with accessing work. • Seek help from the school if they need it through Parent Portal. • Be respectful when making any complaints or concerns known to staff • Ensure that their son/daughter is present for any scheduled live taught lessons using Microsoft Teams. 2.8 Governing board The governing board is responsible for: • Monitoring the school’s approach to providing remote learning to ensure education remains as high quality as possible • Ensuring that staff are certain that remote learning systems are appropriately secure, for both data protection and safeguarding reasons 4
3. Who to contact If staff have any questions or concerns about remote learning, they should contact the following individuals: • Issues with setting appropriate work – Subject Leader • Issues with behaviour – Head of Year • Issues with General IT – IT Helpdesk • Issues with designated online Platforms – Remote Learning Team • Issues with their own workload or wellbeing – Subject Leader/Line Manager • Concerns about data protection – Data Protection Officer • Concerns about safeguarding –DSL and use My Concern. 4. Data protection • Please refer to The Campion School Data Protection Policy and privacy notices which will be adhered to for remote learning 5. Safeguarding • Please refer to The Campion School Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy, including COVID-19 Amendments 6. Remote Learning Good Practice and Recommendations • Moodle will be the main platform for work to be set for all key stages. • Work set on Moodle may refer students to an alternative platform if necessary. • Microsoft Teams will be the sole platform for all live taught lessons, and staff much follow the protocols outlined in the Remote and Blended Learning Audio and Visual Guide. • Staff should use their school laptop for live taught lessons. • Staff should use Loom, OBS, or videos uploaded onto The Campion School private YouTube channel for any other pre-recorded live lesson activities. 7. Monitoring arrangements This policy will be reviewed annually. At every review, it will be approved by the Headmaster and Governors. 8.
