The Bulletin F E B R U A RY 1 9 , 2 0 2 1 Sweet Home Monteverde (film – 57 minutes) Tuesday, February 23 7:00 p.m. on Channel 970 HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO FOR YOUR BELIEFS? In 1950, months after the U.S. entered the Korean War, four Quaker war-resisters from Fairhope, Alabama led some 40 people to emigrate to Costa Rica, a country that had just abolished its army. They settled in a remote cloud forest amid abundant birds and wildlife but with no roads or infrastructure to speak of. They named their community Monteverde (which means “green mountain”). This film chronicles the Quaker’s history of fighting for peace and social and climate justice, and documents how that legacy has been passed to succeeding generations, making the story of the Monteverde Quakers as inspiring and relevant today as ever. Jenny, Quakerism Committee Don’t Miss Out! The Bulletin board next to Penn Hall provides up-to-date information on what’s happening on Channel 970. VOTING BY MAIL IN 2021: DID YOU CHECK THE “ANNUAL” BOX? 1. If you DID check the “Annual Mail-in Request” box on last year’s (2020) application: The Bucks County Board of Elections will send you an application every year in February. In order to receive your ballots automatically for all elections in 2021, you must submit a new application. You can use the paper one they send you, or you can submit an application online (see #2 below). Please note: Although the deadline for submitting your application to vote in the 2021 municipal primary is Tuesday, May 11 at 5:00 p.m., given both the slow speed of postal deliveries and the processing backlog at the Board of Elections, submitting your application as early as possible will help you receive your ballot on time. 2. If you did NOT check the “Annual Mail-in Request” box on last year’s (2020) application, or if you did not vote by mail in 2020: You will NOT receive an application automatically. Do one of the following: --Apply online: Go to votespa.com and click “Option 1: Apply for a mail-in or absentee ballot online.” At the bottom of the page, click “I’m not a robot,” then “Begin your application” and follow the prompts. OR: --Use a paper application: Print one from votespa.com or get one from the League of Women Voters bulletin board, or ask the Board of Elections to send you one (see number below). 3. If you are NOT SURE whether you checked the “Annual Mail-in Request” box last year: Call the Bucks County Board of Elections (215-348-6154 or 215-348-6163) and ask whether you are on the “Annual” list. If not, see #2 above. 4. Filling out the application (box 3): Our “municipality” is Middletown. Our “Voting District” is Upper 5. We don’t have a “ward,” so leave that line blank. 5. Mailing address: If you cannot submit the application online, mail it to: Bucks County Board of Elections, 55 E. Court Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 Anne, League of Women Voters The NY Times Science—Virtual Discussion Group Thursday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. To join our meeting: Email Marcia. For those without computers, call Marcia to join by telephone. If you have a paper copy of Tuesday’s Science Section, you might like to retain it for reference during our Zoom meeting. Helen, Moderator REQUEST FOR TUESDAY’S NY TIMES SCIENCE SECTION If you are getting the New York Times delivered, we’d greatly appreciate your saving Tuesday’s Science Section for our virtual Zoom discussions. Please place the Science Section on the top shelf of the Library’s newspaper rack. 2/19/2021 3

Cancelled stamps are sold in bulk for young collectors to benefit Quaker missions such as RSWR, Friends World Committee for Consultation, Ramallah Play Center, Lugulu Hospital in Kenya, and the Quaker United Nations Office, among others. Since 2009, RSWR has raised over $11,000 from recycled stamps. There is one of Ken Burton’s beautiful wooden boxes on the table in Penn Lounge (by the phone). Please deposit cancelled stamps in the slot on the front of this box. (All postage stamps with edges intact are wanted except NO Christmas stamps OR Flag stamps—PLEASE CUT STAMPS FROM ENVELOPES.) The Quakerism Committee ships the stamps to Indianapolis where the stamps are sorted and sold. Welcome Carole, New Resident Carole is newly arrived at Pennswood, but is no stranger to the Newtown area. She grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska with a B.A. in Music Education. She first worked in elementary schools in Denver, Colorado but quickly decided she wanted to see the East Coast. She never left! On moving to New Jersey, Carole first worked at ETS (Educational Testing Services) then at IBM. Remember the IBM Selectric Magnetic Tape Typewriters in the 1970s? Carole was a marketing service representative and taught this new technology to hundreds of people. Before the era of personal computers, this technology made huge strides in reducing repetitive typing chores. Carole met her husband John while working at IBM, where he was a systems engineer in data processing. After marriage, they made their home in Lambertville, New Jersey for fifteen years, then in Newtown. They had three sons, all of whom are engineers, living in Florida, Texas, and Pittsburgh. Sadly, John died about two years ago; they had already decided on Pennswood for their new home, and she knew Pennswood was where she wanted to live. Carole has been a long-time Presbyterian church member; she has been an Elder and Sunday School teacher in the church and active in music and handbell choirs. She is fortunate that she can continue to attend her same church after her move. Music has long been part of Carole’s life, as an amateur vocalist in musicals and opera and directing musicals for children. She is looking forward to Pennswood’s offerings once live concerts re-commence. Carole and her family frequently travelled during summer holidays, but perhaps her greatest travel adventure happened after college graduation. She and two friends bought Eurail passes and spent the summer in England, Scandinavia, France, Germany and Italy. Those were days of “Europe on $5 a day,” and the new graduates could travel on a tiny budget. Carole is an active walker and has been exploring the trails around Pennswood despite the winter weather. Further activities at Pennswood to be determined! We enjoyed meeting Carole, and hope you will stop to say, “Welcome.” Biographies Committee 2/19/2021 5
