MHVLS Club History The Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service Inc (MHVLS) was established in 1963 and the Club House was built in 1969 to provide a base for the Volunteer Life Guard Service. With a borrowed reel from Waipu Cove SLSC, a small group of volunteers started to patrol the Mangawhai beach every weekend over summer. Mangawhai Heads VLS was one of the first clubs to introduce the inshore rescue boat in 1975. Since then the IRB has become an essential piece of rescue equipment and MHVLS prides itself on having experienced drivers who regularly respond to rescues, and more often than not after-hour callouts to distressed vessels. MHVLS Club Today The Mangawhai Heads VLS has moved with the times since 1963. In 2012, the clubhouse underwent renovations to add value to the complex and provide modern facilities for its members. The club has an active lifeguard base of over 50 lifeguards who volunteer weekends and public holidays during the SLS season. Our membership continues to grow to meet the needs of the Mangawhai community. SERVICE * VIGILANCE * ENDURANCE
Welcome to All Lifeguards Surf Life Saving New Zealand Mission To prevent death and injury on New Zealand beaches Mangawhai Beach is a relatively safe beach however; its popularity still keeps patrolling members busy over the summer period. Last season, we patrolled 4095 voluntary hours, we performed 10 rescues, 48 first aids, 2 searches and nearly 3151 preventative actions including at least two boating incidents on the Mangawhai Bar. At its peak there are up to 1200 people on the beach and 200 enjoying the water. These numbers are steadily increasing as the population in Mangawhai grows. The most actively patrolled area is normally set up at the most popular part of Mangawhai Beach close to the Clubhouse, however the club still monitors its full length, as well as the harbour entrance and waters as far as the eye can see. Most rescue situations occur as a result of swimmers (of all ages) getting beyond their depth or being carried by strong currents. By becoming a Surf Lifeguard, you can take the opportunity to train your body, challenge your mind, develop and apply your leadership skills as well as join a fun team of dedicated clubbies on an awesome beach. Surf Lifeguard Award (Bronze Medallion) To become a qualified Surf Lifeguard, you must gain your Surf Lifeguard Award (Bronze Medallion). You must be 14 years or older and pass your Surf Lifeguard Award exam. Mangawhai Heads VLS and Surf Life Saving Northern Region provide training and examination programmes. The exam comprises of: 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes Run/swim/run in the surf Tube rescue test CPR test 50 Theory questions Practical tests on radio communication and first aid Bronze training is every Sunday from 29 November onwards. Each season active Surf Lifeguards must perform a refresher test. This includes a 400m swim, tube rescue, resuscitation test and first aid questions. This is to ensure that their fitness and knowledge is up to the required standard. SERVICE * VIGILANCE * ENDURANCE

The objective of Surf Sports is to improve the fitness and skill levels of lifeguards. Competition is available in the U16, U19 and open categories. Surf Sports in the senior part of the Club is different from the Junior Club in that there is a wider range of events for seniors and there are a number of team events. In Senior Surf Sports most people tend to concentrate on only a few events. All competitors in Surf Sports must complete a refresher (as must all Lifeguards) and complete a minimum number of patrolling hours each season. There are a number of Surf Sports Carnivals run throughout the season at Regional and National levels. For more information visit https://teamup.com/ksahzhqsix3x2xaqk8 If you are interested in training or competing contact admin@mangawhaisurfclub.org.nz The Jackman Waterman Classic The Jackman Waterman Classic, open to qualified lifeguards only, is a 12km open ocean paddle race that starts at Waipu Cove and ends at Mangawhai Heads. The event is held in honour of legendary waterman and long-time Muriwai Lifeguard and big wave surfer Dave Jackman. Dave Jackman made history by being the first surfer to ride Sydney’s infamous Queenscliff Bombora in 15-foot surf on a longboard in 1961. Born in Cornwall but raised on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Jackman relocated to NZ around 1963 and has been based in Muriwai ever since. He is an inductee to the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame. SERVICE * VIGILANCE * ENDURANCE
In 2009, the then Surf Lifesaving Northern Region Lifesaving manager Tony Baker and MHVLS Lifeguard Dean Storey decided to create an event that would honour Jackman’s prowess as an all- round waterman. Storey, who is a top board paddler and has competed in the Molokai Race in Hawaii several times, decided to link with neighbouring club Waipu Cove to create a long distance race between the two clubs. The event is one of the only long-distance open ocean races of its kind in NZ, something the Mangawhai Heads club is proud of. The event hosts both board paddling and canoe and is growing in popularity each year. The Jackman Waterman Classic will be held on Saturday 5 December 2021. Please contact admin@mangawhaisurfclub.org.nz for registration and payments details or by visiting https://www.mangawhaisurfclub.org.nz/jackman-waterman-classic Any queries contact Donald Baxter 021 347288 or email don@accolade.co.nz Annual Lifeguard Longboard Nationals The Annual Lifeguard Longboard Nationals is a long boarding surfing contest hosted by Mangawhai Heads VLS and has been running since 1992. Lifeguards from both NZ and overseas clubs make the annual pilgrimage to Mangawhai Heads to take part in this iconic event. To be eligible you must be a qualified lifeguard either past or present. The event is founded on the strong traditional ties Mangawhai Heads VLS has with surfing where old single fins and surfing without a leash is the norm. Divisions include Classic/Old Malibu, Masters, Open Men’s, Women’s and Juniors. Over the years, the event has seen some great conditions and some excellent rivalry, but more camaraderie and friendships. The event is always finished off with the classic Line-Up shot and a cold beverage on the deck at the clubhouse. The Longboard Competition will be held on Sunday, 18 April 2021. Welcome to Junior Surf Junior Surf Mission To encourage all children to have fun, participate safely and develop skills and confidence in the surf lifesaving spirit of fair play We wish to extend a warm welcome to prospective Junior Surf members and their families to Mangawhai Heads VLS. Our Junior Surf programme is designed to promote surf skills, fitness, surf sense, water safety and fun in a safe and friendly environment for future athletes, lifeguards, or simply kids who want to make new friends and have a good time. We are looking forward to another fun and busy season and hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Junior Surf Groups (Nippers) Junior Surf is divided into age groups (ages calculated as of 30 September 2020). Some groups are further divided into squads according to age or ability. We insist that parents/guardians remain at the beach during training. Your assistance with training sessions is usually required. Sprats: 4 years’ old This group caters for the youngest ages in Junior Surf, learning basic lifesaving skills through games and activities. The focus is purely on participation, water confidence and most importantly fun for all. Swimming ability required: None, but some water confidence helps. 100% direct parent/guardian participation is mandatory at this level. Uniform: Black togs, skullcap and hi visibility vest compulsory, rash shirt optional, wetsuit recommended. SERVICE * VIGILANCE * ENDURANCE
Tadpoles: 5 - 6 years’ old At Tadpole level, children will be learning basic lifesaving skills through games & activities. The focus is purely on participation, water confidence, and most importantly fun for all. Swimming ability required: None, but some water confidence helps. Uniform: Black togs, club skullcap and hi visibility vest compulsory, rash shirt optional, wetsuit recommended. A Group: 7 - 9 years’ old Children will start to learn the very basics of surf events. These will be broken down into activities and lifeguarding skills. There is a continued focus on water safety and confidence. Children can attain their 200m patch if they are ready for this. There is a continued focus on water safety & confidence. We will start implementing competition skills ready for moving to U10 and B group. Children must obtain their 200m patch to use any boards/equipment and to enter water above their waist. Uniform: Black togs, skullcap, hi visibility vest and swim goggles compulsory for training and competing; wetsuit recommended for training days. A Group: under 10 years’ old Children will receive a solid grounding in beach flags, beach sprints, relays, run-wade-run and boogie board race. They are also introduced to the techniques of surf lifesaving. Competent swimmers (those who earn the 200m patch) will be introduced to surf swimming, and board racing, diamond person and board rescue events. Swimming ability required: Children are expected to look at building their ability to swim at this age. The surf club does not teach members how to swim so a swim school is recommended. They will need to attain a 200m patch to be able to compete in water events (surf swimming, board race, and board rescue). Uniform: Black togs, skullcap, hi visibility vest and swim goggles compulsory for training and competing; wetsuit recommended for training days. B Group: 10 – 11 years’ old At B Group, the children will be introduced to competitions. B Group training builds on life saving skills learnt and introduces more demanding events such as tube rescue. Lifeguard training occurs on a regular basis. Swimming ability required: B Groupers at this level are expected to be able to attain their 200m patch at the start of the season. Uniform: Black togs, skullcap, hi visibility vest and swim goggles compulsory for training and competing, wetsuit recommended for training days. Safety Requirements 200m Safety Badge B and C Group junior members MUST attain their 200m badge before they can train or compete in water events, which go beyond waist depth. This is a mandatory safety requirement, which demonstrates that members are confident in the ocean and capable of returning to shore if they are separated from their equipment. A 200m badge is required in order to use any club equipment. Under 10’s can obtain their 200m badge. To gain a 200m badge, members must complete a 200m ocean swim including one-minute treading water in under 10 minutes total (i.e. the swim must be complete in under 9 minutes) using a competent freestyle stroke. Members who attain this level will be provided with a higher level of water event training. The club runs 200m patch trials on a regular basis over the season (weather dependant). The 200m badge requirement needs to be met each season. 5:1 ratio supervision As another STRICT mandatory safety requirement, we require a minimum supervision ratio (in any water activity, regardless of depth) of 1 adult in the water per 5 children. On rough days, we may increase this number. If we cannot reach the required ratio, the water events will be cancelled. Police checks As further protection for our junior and senior members and the organisation as a whole, SLS Northern Region now requires that a police check be carried out on all adults over 18 years’ old who are in direct contact with children. This is a check for “crimes against children and those of a vulnerable nature” ONLY. Any concerns are notified to the SLSNR CEO only and are treated with utmost confidentiality. Parents who are present for the primary purpose of care, supervision or water safety for their own child do not require Police vetting. Associate membership All people who wish to contribute or participate directly with the Nipper training sessions as a coach, team manager, or coaching assistant (including parent helpers) must be a member of MHVLS. As a financial member you are covered by SLSNR indemnity insurance in the event of accident or injury. Parents/Guardians/Caregivers Parents/guardians/caregivers play a huge role in Junior Surf. Mangawhai Heads VLS encourages everyone to take the opportunity to become active contributors to the Junior Surf program. Spectators It is always a pleasure to see families encouraging and supporting Junior Surf members as they train and compete. At all times, please ensure your behaviour and language are appropriate and that your encouragement is positive and in the spirit of fair play. Any concerns can be discussed with the coach or team manager. Most of all, remember to KEEP IT FUN! SERVICE * VIGILANCE * ENDURANCE
Parent helpers Your help during training and competitions is always required and appreciated by the coaches. It is also a great way to get to know everyone and feel part of the Club. This year we will be asking each family to nominate a parent helper and tell us which role you believe you can best help us in. These roles include: Set up / Pull down Water Safety Official BBQ Fundraising Coach, assistant coach, group manager, beach assistant, water assistant Equipment care & storage Clubroom, kitchen & bathroom tidy If you would like to help contact Vanessa Fulton 021 955562or email vanessafulton@gmail.com Junior Surf Coaches Coaches are always needed. There is no experience required; just a love of kids and helping them enjoy the water and beach environment. Without volunteers who give their time to Junior Surf each session, this programme would cease to exist. Club Support Sponsorship - $300 per year Our club relies heavily on sponsorships, donations, grants & fundraising. This enables us to have lifeguards on the beach keeping Mangawhai, and its many visitors, safe. Even though the club receives some funding it is not enough to cover all costs. This season we have introduced Club Support Sponsorship to help provide the much needed funds. A sponsorship day is held once a year where we acknowledge our wonderful sponsors and supporters. This is an opportunity for them to see first-hand a day in the life of a lifeguard at Mangawhai Heads. Benefits also include: - Club t-shirt and supporters sticker -invitation to the prize giving -acknowledgement on the Business Supporters/Sponsors board outside the club -inclusion in our annual report -acknowledgement on our website sponsors page If you would like to contribute, please email admin@mangawhaisurfclub.org.nz Mangawhai Heads VLS would like to acknowledge and thank the following Sponsors, Supporters and Funding Organisations Mangawhai Opportunity Factory (MCOST) Viranda (Mangawhai Central) Kaipara District Council Northland Regional Council Sport Northland Pub Charity RITA (NZ Racing Board) Kaiwaka Sports Association The Club Mangawhai Tara Iti Golf Club Bammas Surf Shop Mason Containers Limited Cube Signage & Design Strong Chartered Accountants Mangawhai Meat Shop Mangawhai Boating & Fishing Club Four Square Molesworth Go Gas Plumbing M.K.
