Shale Oil Works POTENTIAL ART THEMES The two shale oil works in the village, Hopetoun (c.1872) and Niddry Castle (c.1903) were pioneering; they built housing including the Rows, and were the first to use electricity. Agriculture: Before the shale industry Winchburgh was primarily agriculture-focused. Being part of the Hopetoun Estate the farms were advanced. Mary Queen of Scots: After her escape from captivity in Loch Leven Castle, Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Niddry Castle on 2 May 1568, The Union Canal The last canal to be built in the UK, hundreds of Scottish and Irish navvies worked on building it with every spadeful shifted by human toil.
POTENTIAL ART THEMES Miners’ pastimes: Pigeon racing, keeping and racing greyhounds, Pitch and Toss, and bowling were all popular pastimes. Gardening & honey: John Reid, author of ‘The Scots Gard’ner’ (1683) was born at Niddry Castle. The walled garden he planted and beehives villagers kept made Winchburgh famous for honey. Gala Day: Still going today, Gala Days take place in mining villages and were a chance to dress up and focus on the children of the community. The Railway: The railway station opened in 1842, and there were some eventful incidents during the construction between the Irish and Scottish workers. The station closed in 1930.
Sport: POTENTIAL ART THEMES Winchburgh Albion Football Club produced several well known football players, and from the curling pond at Glendevon to the Niddry Castle Golf Club Winchburgh has a history as a place of sport: Transportation: Winchburgh had the first successful electric railway in Scotland during the time of the oil works. Soon it will once again have a station Industry: Dougal’s Brickworks was famed for its strong bricks. Local men, after a night out were known to sleep close to the warm kilns. Battle of Bannockburn: In 1314 the English army that had been defeated at the Battle of Bannockburn tried to get the Scottish into a fight at Winchburgh but Douglas stayed on their flank side. The chase continued all the way to Dunbar Castle.
Themes: POTENTIAL SITE 1 - Gala Day 2 - Shale Oil Works LEISURE SPACE 3= - Sport / Industry / Agriculture The site straddles both sides of the B9080 road to Linlithgow. We were attracted to it because it takes in both the existing park to the south and the new retail area to NEW RETAIL the north. With plans to have the shops open in December AREA 2015 this will be an opportunity for an artwork to bridge the new and existing parts of Winchburgh. The artworks would EXISTING be sited in both the retail area and the park, both places PARK where people will have time to enjoy the artworks. Artists impression of the proposed retail development on the north side of the B9080 road. View of the park that runs along the south side of the B9080 road.
Themes: POTENTIAL SITE 1= - Miner’s Pastimes 1= - Gardening & Honey COMMUNITY SPACE 3 - Gala Day There is funding available for the community to improve the land around the old post office and former Star & Garter pub. There are aspirations to turn this into a community garden. When these plans come to fruition this would be a good location for artwork, and could be integrated into the design of the garden. Former Star & Garter Pub Site Former Post Office Site
Themes: POTENTIAL SITE 1 - Mary Queen of Scots 2= - Shale Oil Works / HISTORICAL SITES Battle of Bannockburn / Industry / Gardening AULD CATHIE There are several historical sites in WInchburgh which we felt could benefit from having an artwork nearby. Auld Cathie and Niddry Castle can be seen today, but their history isn’t immediately apparent to the casual visitor. There is not much sign of Niddry Castle Oil Works (except the bing it created), so an artwork that draw’s people’s attention to Winchburgh’s shale oil past would seem logical. NIDDRY CASTLE In these three locations it might be that the artworks OIL WORKS need to be located slightly away from the actual remains due to their historical significance and ease of access. NIDDRY CASTLE
Themes: POTENTIAL SITE 1 - Union Canal 2= - Transportation UNION CANAL 2= - Industry The Union Canal flows through Winchburgh between Philpstoun and Broxburn. The towpath is a peaceful place to visit and can form part of a circular walk around the village. In some places the canal is in a cutting and there is not much sign of the village, in other places views of Winchburgh are possible. We were attracted to this site by the variety of spaces along the towpath and the opportunity to make people who are passing along the canal more aware of Winchburgh as they pass through. Artists impression of the proposed canal basin Photographs of the canal as it is today
GATEWAY Themes: NORTH POTENTIAL SITE 1= - Shale Oil Works 1= - Transportation GATEWAYS 1= - Industry We think it’s important to signal the points in and out of Winchburgh and welcome people as they enter. This is an GATEWAY opportunity to convey to visitors and new residents the history EAST of Winchburgh and its aspirations. Walking around the village and studying the masterplan has led us to locate a series of gateways. There is a north, east, south and west gateway, and an extra westerly gateway further into Winchburgh. The scale of the artworks at these gateways may vary GATEWAY depending on the speed of traffic and scale of nearby buildings SOUTH and landscape, however we would see them as being part of the same ‘family’. GATEWAY INNER-WEST
Themes: POTENTIAL SITE 1 - Industry 2 - Transportation CLAY PIT 3= - Miner’s Pastimes 3= - Sport The claypit was originally part of Dougal’s Brickworks of which nothing else remains. Residents we have met have lots of stories about the claypit and brickworks, and we felt that this was a promising site for an artwork. In the future the claypit will form part of a new park for Winchburgh making the site even more important to residents. Photograph of the claypit as it is today. A train can be seen on the other side of the claypit before it An artist’s impression of how the new park could look and its connection with the town centre enters the tunnel. development.
Themes: POTENTIAL SITE 1 - Agriculture 2 - Battle of Bannockburn GLENDEVON PARK & 3 - Gardening & Honey AULDCATHIE GARDENS There is a passage of land that can not be built on because it forms the route of the gas main pipe from the canal to south of Glendevon Farm. It is proposed to keep this land as open space, forming part of Glendevon Park & Auldcathie Gardens. We feel that this would be a good place to position artworks as it forms a new pedestrian route though Winchburgh and has plenty of space for stopping enroute. The current line of the gas main pipe, that will form part of Auldcathie Gardens The wide strip of open land in Glendevon Park beside the new homes
Themes: POTENTIAL SITE 1 - Railway 2 - Shale Oil Works FUTURE STATION 3= - Transportation 3= - Industry In 2018 trains will once again be stopping in Winchburgh. After years without a station this will be an important new service for the village and we feel that the station would be a great location for an artwork. In this position the artwork can welcome visitors, and returning residents, to Winchburgh. Aerial view of the location of the proposed station, north of the original station, and the land around it.
CHOSEN SITE FOR THE TRAILBLAZER ARTWORK
CHOSEN SITE FOR ART Future Housing THE LEISURE SPACE NORTH LOCATION Retail, amenity and The ‘Leisure Space’ is the community and the office area commissioning group’s preferred site for the trailblazer artwork. The site is made up of two locations; one north and one south of the road. THE LEISURE SPACE The site straddles both sides of the B9080 road to Linlithgow. We were attracted to it because it takes in both the existing park Parish to the south and the new retail, SOUTH LOCATION Church amenity and office area to the north. ‘Barratt’ Park With plans to have the shops open in December 2015 this will be an opportunity for an artwork to bridge the new and existing parts of Winchburgh. The artworks would be sited both north and south of the road, both places where people will have time Existing Housing to enjoy the artworks.

NORTH LOCATION: POTENTIAL POSITIONS RETAIL We met with Ian Logan (OPEN), Sandy Anderson (Michael Laird) and Robin Matthew (PPCA) and discussed a number of possible positions for the artwork in the RETAIL & north location. 1st FLOOR A OFFICE The options are: A - Bespoke benches B D C CONVENIENCE B - Brick elevation to main road STORE C - Large corner window onto A main road D - Paving area adjacent to benches B9080 ROAD The following pages outline more detail about the different options. Our recommendation is that option A, the bespoke benches is progressed as the trailblazer artwork.

NORTH LOCATION: POTENTIAL POSITIONS OPTION A - BENCHES It was felt that the benches posed the most potential for a number of reasons: - Budget had already been allocated for the OPEN designed bespoke benches and the design of these could change. - OPEN were positive about the idea of the benches becoming art commissions. - There is potential to locate benches as part of the same commission within the park.
NORTH LOCATION: POTENTIAL POSITIONS OPTION B - BRICK ELEVATION OF OFFICE
NORTH LOCATION: POTENTIAL POSITIONS OPTION B - BRICK Artwork could be created by engraving or embossing some of the bricks. These could be specially created as in the bike below Artwork could be applied on to the wall, either as 2d or 3d ELEVATION OF OFFICE or engraved on site as in the birds. pieces. It was felt that this location was somewhat challenging and would pose issues in terms of the ownership of the artwork and responsibilities for maintenance. We therefore think this option should be discounted at this stage.

NORTH LOCATION: POTENTIAL POSITIONS OPTION C - CORNER One idea could be to apply imagery or coloured films to the The window could be used as a display showing artwork and WINDOW OF OFFICE window to create a large scale artwork. illuminated at night. It was felt that this idea may need to be discounted due to it being positioned within the let space of the development and that the lifespan of the artwork may not be as great as the other examples.
NORTH LOCATION: POTENTIAL POSITIONS OPTION D - PAVING ADJACENT TO BENCHES
NORTH LOCATION: POTENTIAL POSITIONS Metal could be inlaid into the paving to create an artwork. OPTION D - PAVING Patterns, maps, drawings and images could all be translated Words could be engraved into the hard landscaping, transcribing ADJACENT TO BENCHES onto the ground in this way. poems, quotes and songs. There is currently no extra budget allocated to this area of hard landscaping, so the artwork would need to be funded solely by the art budget. Therefore it was felt that the resulting artwork may not have the impact hoped for.
