Message from the CEO Dear All As many of you are aware, the aged care industry has and will continue to go through changes following completion of the Royal Commission into Aged care. The Royal Commission has issued many recommendations which government are reviewing, and it is expected that some will be legislated quick- ly , others will take time .and some may not be adopted at all. However, one of the recent changes is the commencement from the 1st April 2021 of the Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS) – Priority 1 incidents. This scheme places a compulsory requirement on aged care providers to report certain incidents which includes unreasonable use of force, unlawful or inappropriate sexual conduct, neglect, psychological or emotional abuse, unexpected death, stealing or financial coercion, inappropriate use of physical or chemical restraint and unexplained absence of a resident from the aged care facility. From October 2021 Pri- ority 2 incidents will also be required and I will advise further in future newsletters. I also would like to thank you all for your understanding and patience during our prolonged recruitment drive to employ Fitness & Lifestyle Co- ordinators. We are fortunate to have recruited Crystal and our search for another continues.. I am hoping that we can now have activities and outings that you will all enjoy, and we are also looking for suggestions as to where you would like to go on outings. These suggestions can be given directly to Crystal or you can complete a feedback form with your suggestions. You may also be aware that one of our carers Jess has transitioned into her new role of Dementia Support Worker within the facility. This is a full time role to support our dementia clients and improve the social interaction and activities offered to ensure residents are involved in activities that are fun and enjoyable. The Dementia Support Worker will also be a support and resource to staff and will be able to educate staff on commu- nication and engagement with residents with dementia. The role will also review residents presenting with challenging behaviours or risk taking behaviours and look at triggers for the behaviour and implement strategies to manage the identified behaviours. The Dementia Support Worker is currently completing a Diploma in Dementia which is being funded by Hocart Lodge Aged Centre Inc. We will be evaluating this role late June 2021 and I am certain that this new role will only improve and compliment the care and services provided to our residents and specifically those with dementia. Jess is still finding her feet in the role but is doing an excellent job and is looking forward to the challenges of this new role The organisation has also enrolled 13 staff to complete the Dementia Essentials course through Dementia Australia which will commence from the 26th May 2021. As you will be aware from previous newsletters, recruitment of staff has been challenging and whilst it has improved in recent months, we are still continuing to advertise for key staff including care staff. We are pleased to have had many new staff including RN’s, care staff, kitchen staff and cleaning staff join our team over the past one month and are also pleased to advise that we have recruited a further Cook. The new Cook is Milena and I am sure you will all meet her in the coming weeks. Milena will work opposite Gopal our other Cook and both will be supported by Bev Luke who is our Hospitality Supervisor. We continue to advertise for a Care Manager and hope this key position can be filled in the coming months, until then I will continue to take on the responsibilities of this role in addition to my duties and responsibilities as the Chief Executive Officer. A very big thank you to all our staff who have assisted the facility through the staffing challenges, we certainly could not achieve what we do without their assistance and commitment. Finally, sincere thanks to Harvey Rotary Club who kindly donated $600 towards purchases for our activities department, please contact Sheridan if you wish to know what equipment was purchased with this donation. I hope you enjoy the newsletter and we welcome any suggestions on how we can improve on the newsletter or the care and services we provide. Many thanks & Kind regards Ishbell

Important Message: Mandatory Flu Vaccinations for visitors to aged care facilities: A reminder that it is mandatory for all visitors to aged care facilities to have received their flu vaccination and to provide evidence of this to the facility. Please ensure you make arrangements to receive your 2021 vaccination and email confirmation to reception@hocartlodge.com.au. If you are unable to receive the flu vaccination due to health or religious reasons, we will require evidence of an exemption certificate from your GP. Aged care providers are required to take all reasonable steps to ensure that a person does not enter or remain on the premises if they do not meet the flu vaccination (and other) requirements. COVID 19 Vaccination: The majority of our residents have received both COVID 19 vaccinations. For those residents who have been admitted post the vac- cination program dates, if consenting to the COVID vaccinations we will liaise with GP surgeries to arrange this.
Important Message: Terry White Pharmacy, Eaton As you are aware, Hocart Lodge Aged Centre Inc. has recently change pharmacy agreements and our contracted supplier of medica- tions is now Terry White, Eaton effective from the 24 th May 2021. This change has occurred after careful consideration and a review of the services offered by Terry White pharmacy and there experi- ence in providing services to other aged care providers. In making our decision, we did contact the other aged care providers to obtain their feedback and experience in using Terry White, Eaton and it was very positive including the telephone support offered to nursing staff by Terry White and the prompt supply of medications. Another significant factor for this change is our transition in the coming months to using an electronic medication management software. This is something that we have wanted to implement over the past two years but are only now in the position to push forward with. Terry White staff are familiar with the software we have decided to use and their knowledge and support will be invaluable to our nursing staff during the transition. Please check the newsletter for the brief introduction to Terry White pharmacy, and I know their staff are excited about providing services to Hocart Lodge. Many thanks to our nursing staff who have been very patiently waiting for this software to be implemented. I understand that any change can be difficult but I would assure you that this change has been discussed over a number of months and with a great deal of thought and consideration, and I apologise if this has caused any confusion, distress or upset to our residents or family members. Our policies and procedures regarding medication management remain unchanged and it is simply that our agreement has ended with Harvey Pharmacy and our new agreement has commenced with Terry White, Eaton. Hesta Excellence in Aged Care award We are pleased to inform you that we have been nominated in the above category and will know shortly if we have progressed to the semi final stage. We will keep you updated and fingers crossed that we reach the finals stage!

Sheridan’s Adventures I cannot believe another 2 months has passed and it is time to write another installment for you all. I sadly have not had many adventures over the last couple of months, so I thought I would fill you in on what I have been up to in- stead. Easter happened since my last article. A lot of chocolate was consumed, and now I am trying to completely avoid it until next year. This is always a bad time of year where fitness goals go out the window for a 4-day chocolate feast, followed by a week of withdrawals and regret. I did get to set up my lovely Easter center- piece on the dining table at home, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have also spent a lot of time over the past months helping my best friends put their nursery together for the arrival of their first ba- by. We have done lots of DIY including paint- ing, skirting boards, more painting, styling, building furniture and more. It has been such a fun experience for me as I love anything DIY. It is the best feeling when you finish a project and can stand back to admire all your hard work. Most of my time however goes to Bradie. She is now just over 10 months old I cannot believe it. I will be sure to fill you all in on her 1st birthday next issue. We have been undertaking in 2x training courses for Bradie over the last 6 weeks which has meant my weekends are full of dog clas- ses and learning. Bradie and I are currently working on Obedience Level 2, and Beginners Agility with our chosen trainer. We have been working toward becoming a good team togeth- er with a clear understanding that I am the Al- pha. This is still a work in progress as she likes to think that she is still the boss at times.
Agility training has been so much fun and a great way to use up excess puppy energy. On our 1st class Bradie would not attempt the tun- nel, but now she likes to lay down and hide inside it. I’m not really sure if this was the pro- gress I had hoped for, but I guess time will tell. She has improved with her ramp walking since the wobbly unsure puppy from class 1. Now she will happily and calmy walk up the ramp and along the thin platform and down the oth- er side. I hope to be able to acquire some of these obstacles as she progresses to do more training in the back yard at home and maybe we can even come and show all our Hocart friends what we have learnt too. You are all probably wondering why you have not seen Bradie this last month. Well, her body decided it was time for her first heat cy- cle. This was not fun at all as I am sure you can imagine. She also was not much of a scary guard dog in this time as we had to put her in puppy nappies. Until now I honestly never thought I would be the person that has my dog in nappies, but I have to say they were great. Bradie had such a build up of en- ergy that after 3 weeks of being on heat our 1st proper walk was a very big, high energy, hour long one. She is so happy to now be back to normal and I’m sure she is very excit- ed to be coming in to see you all again very soon. I will endeavor to get out on some nice wintery adventures over the coming months, so I have some better content for you all next issue.
