Dear applicant, Firstly welcome to St Augustine’s School and I am delighted that you are considering joining our staff team for September 2021. Our development over the last four years has been siginificant and has been centered around high expectations, allowing teachers and support staff the freedom to teach and enjoy their work and making sure our students are supported, nurtured and above all encouraged. It is difficult in some ways to encapsulate in words the full dynamism and vibrancy of our school. We are hugely proud of our students and privileged to serve them and the Scarborough community. We see it as our professional and moral duty to prepare them as individuals to play their part as active citizens – rounded and centred and aware of all they might contribute to the world. In practical terms, this commitment is manifested in the lessons we deliver, the extra- curricular opportunities we offer and in the wider opportunities we promote. Our school mantra is ‘Love and Serve through Christ’. As a small school we are able to really get to know our students and in many ways this is one of the reasons why we have had very little staff turnover in recent years. My staff tell me they like working here, feel supported and encouraged and value the open door approach we have with parents and the community. Teaching is one of the best jobs in the world and for any professional who is looking for either thei first or next school it is vital you find one that will support you. Myself and our SLT all teach because we enjoy it, and it allows us to to continue to develop in the classroom. I still get a buzz when a student learns something new. We are a founding school member within the newly formed St Margaret Clitheroe Catholic Academy Trust. This will provide opportunities for our staff to access training, support and development and retain our inclusive nature and Catholic ethos. We hope you can see that this is an excellent time to join St Augustine’s and if successful you will join a staff team of wonderful professionals who have ambition for our students and for themselves. We hope that you will take the time to come and see and experience for yourself the warm and welcoming family atmosphere which makes our vision a reality. In the meantime, I very much look forward to hearing from you. I appreciate the amount of time that goes into an application, so thank you in advance. Paul Griffin (Headteacher) St Augustine’s School
About us St Augustine’s is a vibrant, successful 11-16 school situated in the heart of Scarbrough. Over the years we have become the school of choice for our community. We are consistently oversubscribed and have strong partnerships with our local schools enabling us to be outward facing in our teaching and learning and innovative in offering a wide range of professional opportunities for our staff. As a Catholic School we place great value on the individuality of each child in our care. We want excellence in all aspects of learning, priding ourselves on our positive Catholic ethos, which supports and enhances the personal development and well- being of every individual. We aim to provide the very best learning opportunities where students are challenged, inspired and encouraged to reach their full potential. We believe that there is no limit to what a young person can achieve if they are given the right levels of encouragement and support. As a school we work in partnership with students, their parents/carers and the community to ensure that we make the most of these important times. Teaching posts rarely come up at our school, and we are looking for innovative, passionate and child centered professionals to join us. So why work at St Augustine’s? 1. Teaching and Learning At St Augustine’s we believe in life long learing; learning that is an enjoyable experience for all. Quality first teaching is at the core of everything we do. Every student is entitled to experience a variety of teaching and learning styles which enable them to achieve their full potential and be the best they can be. We aim, through successful teaching and learning underpinned by researching practice, to develop the whole child and to enable our students to become life long learners. Leaders consistently evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning within their departments and seek opportunities for regular developmental feedback and training, which creates the strong, supportive and vibrant culture at St Augustine’s.
2. Expectations There is a firm and fair approach to behaviour, underpinned by an ethos of positive relationships. Students and staff strive to be the best they can be. Teachers pass on a love of their subject and prioritise the planning and teaching of their lessons. School leaders walk the talk: they all teach, love their subjects, understand the importance of avoiding workload pressures and are highly visible around the school. We have invested in a comprehensive pastoral system in order to support the well-being of all. We also have a specialist well-being team who work with students and staff to create a nurturing environment in which no one gets left behind. St Augustine’s whole heartedly promotes the raising aspirations of young people and subscribe to our strap line of ‘Love and Serve through Christ’ 3. Partnerships and out of the box thinking We work closely with the Diocese of Middlesborough Teaching Alliance where we are a lead school along with supporting the Scarborough Teaching Alliance as a coastal partner. The North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area has brought new ideas and professional development opportunities across Whitby, Scarborough and Filey as we work together on the social mobility agenda.
What our staff say about our school Sarah Richards, Head of Geography I joined the school in 2014 and immediately felt welcomed into the St. Augustine’s family. What stands out most to a new-comer is how all staff work as a cohesive team to support the wider school ethos. There are a variety of extra-curricular activities to get involved with, and pupils really appreciate the additional opportunities offered to them. As Head of Geography I have been fully supported by SLT and Governors to develop fieldwork programmes including local trips in KS3, GCSE study tours to the Lake District and Liverpool and even an expedition to Uganda. Career progression is a key focus and all opportunities for subject, management and pastoral training are encouraged. St. Augustine’s is a small, friendly school where staff work hard to support and encourage pupils to achieve their best, which is why so many staff also choose this school for their children. Katie Selby, Teacher of English In September 2014, I joined the St. Augustine’s family as a N.Q.T in the English Department. I have always felt encouraged and supported to use my skills within the classroom as well as outside it. Alongside my colleagues, I have had the privilege to encourage and improve students’ academic ability together with their well-being. Also, I have had the opportunity to take part in professional development and to challenge myself into exploring new avenues. During my five years working here, I have found that staff, students and parents are generally friendly, warm and supportive of our school ethos, therefore making St. Augustine’s a very unique place to work. Dan Gadd, Teacher of Maths I started St Augustine’s in September 2017 and have thoroughly enjoyed becoming part of the school family. St Augustine’s is a very friendly school with a warm and supportive staff. The overall ethos of the school is what attracted me to the position in the first place and the love and care that everyone is shown is the major strength of the school. The students at St Augustine’s are polite, friendly and most of all keen to participate in lessons and also in activities beyond the classroom. As a mathematics teacher I am teaching a group of year 10’s at lunchtime who are keen to do the AQA Further Mathematics qualification.
