HUNT STORY KEVIN EVERARD LOUIS DUCKVILLE HUT FLY-IN LOUIS FERENS It was a cool and clear day when Kevin, Everard and I flew into Duckville Hut. The area was steep with dense native forest and few obvious slips. Once the helicopter had left and the gear was stashed in the hut, we were keen to set off and see what Te Uruwera had to offer. Day 1 & 2 was spent exploring the ridge lines and major streams, trying to get an idea of where the deer were spending time and travelling through. I found the high ground was often cold open bush with rustling crown fern and little cover from the elements. The main river seemed to be a frequented area in the mornings, the scattered piles of deer bones suggested rewarding and used hunting grounds. The main river would also often be home to changing winds that brought on difficult stalking. On the late morning of day 2 after following some fresh tracks from a side creek up into steep and eventually unclimbable terrain – a deer had spooked and shot away from above me; it seemed clear an early morning creek mission would be the best chance of finding my quarry. After some good yarns and drinks around the fireplace, my plan for next morning was hatched: a slow stalk up a nearby side creek as soon as there was enough visibility in the bush. The plan also conveniently fell on the morning after a new moon, suggesting minimal deer movement during the night. I began the day by slowly stalking up the creek and soon came across freshly turned leaves revealing rich dark soil in the pattern of game trail. Slowing down to the point where I 12 13
HUNT STORY A common sight when climbing would take in everything within eyesight and carefully place my ridgelines next step. After doing this for some time, a slight movement behind a fern presented an unsuspecting small deer. Hoping to secure the animal as certainly as possible I shot into its left shoulder and dropped it on the spot. I was hoping a Rusa hind would be revealed – a higher hill behind the ferns. It was a male red yearling, surely good eating but not what I was after. I butchered it, hung the meat in a tree and continued upstream. Roughly another 150 metres up the winding and dense creek I found fresh droppings and prints that suggested a much larger animal. While I had been moving quietly to this point, I slowed down yet again and followed the trail to a pile of fallen trees surrounded by stinging nettle. I knew I wouldn’t pass through HIDDEN IN PLAIN easily, so I stalked across the creek and progressed passed the SIGHT, THE RUSA logs. Taking in the area, I turned to my right - standing broadly IN THE CREEK with its nose held high, a 4-point Rusa stag stood quietly trying to catch my scent. At 15 metres distance, a shot was quickly placed to the stag’s chest. The stag’s stillness had in an instant, erupted into flight and disappeared through the fallen trees. After a tedious 20-minute wait, I was glad to find the stag laying still and lifeless in the creek bed – a well built and heavy Rusa with small antlers, perhaps last year’s spiker. It was a real rush to get my first stag and have another deer on the deck by 10am, particularly after making a real effort to put the hunter training theory to practice.
