2018 BONDI ICEBERGS SWIMMING REPORT Ben Morrissey,Captain Lofty’s wisdom is passed onto members in a final speech, followed by a familiar rousing rendition of the club song.

Yalumba Male Championships It was two familiar faces touching first in this season 100-metre events in Dori and Joel. They both had to work hard to get the honours with newcomer Maddi Blomberg taking the early lead on the first lap, before Dori showed her power in the final quarter to take the Gold. Simon Nothling was very strong in the closing stages to just finish behind Joel, while David Schnabl had a gogle malfunction, but still managed to take the bronze. Awards Night Numbers may have been down, but the quality of Bergs was high at the annual Awards night to celebrate our representative swimmers on a great season. Both winners male and female swimmers of the year were deserving with each picking up an abundance of medals for the Club during the season, in particular Gold at the Aussie Titles. The top awards for the season went to the following committed Icebergs Male Swimmer of the Year – Ben Cush Female Swimmer of the Year – Dori Miller Iceberg of the Year – Dave Gabriel
Icebergs Season Point Score This year we had an interesting chain of events. The Handicapper Elisabeth Och and Assistant Handicapper Michael Malley, brought in a system of monitoring and adjusting swimmers’ times that by the end of the year had reduced the number of blows significantly. Such a change takes some time to implement and next year we should see some very close racing as a result. The under 50 years 40 metre Point Score Champion for 2018 was Adam Nezval. The rivalry in this category was intense with the lead changing quite a few times during the year. Towards the end Peter Riley looked to be the man to beat but in the final race on closing day, Adam came through with a win to take the honours on 46 points. Peter Riley was second on 45 points and Mathew Hall third on 44. In the over 50 years, John Irwin never looked like losing and finished on 56 points. He had an 8-point lead going into the final and was therefore unbeat- able. Might be something to do with a certain heart function and he may have had some assistance there. I think we will have to get the Handicapper to talk to John’s surgeon. Seriously, a great effort from a long-time member who was dangerously ill not so long ago. Di Urquhart was second with 49 and a three- way tie for third with Tony George, Gary Nicholls and Tony Wall all on 42. The 50 metre Point Score was another walk over. Paul Martin, one of our Lifeguards, carefully managed his swims over the last few rounds to finish on 46 points. He easily defeated the rest of the field with Gary Nicholls taking the win in the final race, to finish on 43 and Nicki Vinnicombe third on 39 points. “My tip for prospective winners, watch how your handicap changes during the year and adjust your strategy accordingly.” Alan Gow Point Score Secretary

2018 Southern Metropolitan Championships - Male & Female The Bondi icebergs put in an incredible Team effort on Sunday 8 July, with both the Male and Female teams topping the point score and dominating the newly introduced combined point score. The Bergs depth was evident in the Relays when the Club picked up eight Golds out of the twelve contested. Once again, Dori Miller was named Swimmer of the Meet. I was particular proud of our male squad who had many of their number one ranked swimmers unavail- able and to still finish ahead of the Polar Bears was a great ‘team’ effort. Inter-Club Relays The Bergs performed very well in the annual Inter-Club swims. First up was the Mo Edwards against the Wollongong Whales with the Bergs retaining the unique Shield. A short trip south to Cronulla Polar Bears the Bergs joined Bulli Sea Lions in the 3-way swim with the Bergs returning to Club with Joe Dillon Trophy. Another large contingent headed up south from Wollongong SLSC with the boys in maroon confident of retaining the Ted Tobin Memorial Shield, but this time minus their Olympians, the Bergs pair of Cush and Schnabl proved too strong. Amazingly the tradition 10+ Relay for the Noel Schubert Trophy finished in another dead heat. I look forward to seeing the inaugural swim with Stanwell Park featuring our Bergs ladies really growing over the coming seasons and the two clubs building great relationships.

Bondi Icecubes Report 2018 has been an amazing year for the Bondi Icecubes with a record number of new members and supporters on board. Each Sunday throughout winter our super members ranging in age from 6 - 17 have braved the Bondi ele- ments to swim 40 and 50 metre races. And, wow have they improved over the season. We love to see the little ones who start swimming with a Mum or Dad in the water reach a stage when they can dive into any lane, put their heads down and swim hard to the finish. It’s not about winning or losing it’s all about that feeling of achievement! It’s fantastic when the whole club is cheering on that last swimmer in the race just battling to reach the end. We can feel the love and support behind us and it is amazing! Thanks to everyone who takes the time to watch the races and cheer the kids - it’s great! As always the season would not be possible without the continued and valued support of our wonderful volunteers who turn up each week to run the front desk, man the barbecue, start them on the blocks or time them at the end of the swim. You are all fantastic! Thanks to the parents who bring the kids down each week to be part of our club and part of our wider Bondi com- munity. Special thanks to the ever present John Kirby for his long term support ably assisted by Christina Staley, Ingrid Struhe and Bernadette Harkin, our new helpers on the front desk. Thanks to Ian Dupree, Nicki Vinnicombe and Adam Nezval on the pool deck and our Barbecue team Tony Wall and Linda Helm for a great sausage sizzle. Thank you to Bobby Elliot and his judges and timekeepers who continually turn up to help us out. Without these amazing people our swim season just wouldn’t happen. A big thank you to Noel O’Dwyer who has been our President for the last 2 seasons taking over after the sad loss of our great friend David Hall (still missed by all!). Noel has been a super supporter of the Cubes for many years and will retire from the position at the end of this season. As will the M & M’s Michele Borkowski and Michaela Short who will also take a step back after more than 10 years and take on a consultancy role! A big thank you must also go to our sponsors – Malleys Lawyers, Phillips Foote Restaurant, 2Aspire Business Solutions, BB International, All Sign Solutions & Mastercut Meats. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. The Icecubes is a fantastic community club which we are proud to be part of. Thank you to all involved. Noel O’Dwyer, President – Bondi Icecubes Michele Borkowski and Michaela Short, (M & M’s) from the front desk.
A special mention must go to Ned Wieland for his amazing efforts this year in becoming the young- est male to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. Through his efforts he raised over $40,000 for charity RUOK? Day. SERC Visit 2018 This year marked the third visit to the Bergs by our sister club from San Francisco, the South End Rowing Club. The visitors really excelled on this trip bringing a team of 21 swimmers led by Angelina Calderon having her first experience as a tour organiser and our regular SERC visitor, Joe Butler who has attended all previous Bergs visits. The SERC visit is always timed to coincide with Opening Day and not just for the Day’s events but the weather in May is usually fine with warm water and this year was no exception with lovely days right throughout the swim program. We warmed up with a few Bay swims where our regular Bay Swimming crowd (The Mid Morning Puffer Crew) took the South Enders over and back in the days leading up to the weekend’s main events and each day our numbers increased as more visitors arrived. Kim Howard, an ex-President of the SERC, had her first significant ocean swim with the Bergs regulars going over and back without difficulty. Friday brought the Bronte to Bondi swim. Brent Jackson organised a strong contingent from Bondi Surf Club to act as water safety and with our own Michael Malley on paddleboard, the swimmers walked over from the Bergs and hit the water at Bronte at 10.00 am. Conditions were near perfect with little or no swell and a beautifully clear day. After posing for photos on the beach 32 swimmers headed out from Bronte, past Tamarama, around Mackenzie Point and into the Bergs via the Bogey. We followed up with Friday night drinks and nibbles in the Bergs Function Room as we all psyched ourselves up for the next day’s race across the Bay. The Across the Bay Race rules are simple, you swim flat out on the Starter’s gun from the Bergs Bogey to the North Bondi Boat ramp and back. The 2014 race was won by Ashley Horne of SERC and the closest to nominated time was Katie Price from the Bergs. Well, this year 48 swimmers entered the race scrutineered by Garry Hardaker. The champion for 2018 was Emily Buskirk from SERC in 24 minutes and the closest to nominated time was Kim Howard of the SERC. That means there are now four female winners names on the two trophies and three of them are South End swimmers. Please Bergs can we have a better showing in 2020 and let’s see if we can get a Bergs name and maybe a male one on those trophies. The presentations were made by Benn Dullard and Ben Morrisey at the pool deck BBQ manned by Steve Goddard and the BBQ boys. Bergs swimmers and our SERC visitors exchanged commemorative t-shirts and swapped stories on what was a great day. The SERC swimmers joined in the Opening Day fun on Sunday, participating in the Ice Ceremony and competing on handicap with the Bergs in the 40 and 50 metre races. The visit was a great success and we will look forward to entertaining the SERC when they next tour in 2020. If you would like to go on the Bergs tour in 2019, to swim Alcatraz with the South End Rowing Club and to enjoy some San Francisco hospitality, catch up with Alan Gow for details.
