SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 05 Quarter Final- Downton 0-1 Lymington Town Farnborough North End 0-3 Bournemouth Moneyfields 0-2 VT FC Wimborne Town 3-0 Christchurch Semi Final- Bournemouth 1-0 Wimborne Town Wimborne Town 1-0 Bournemouth (Aggregate score 1-1. Bournemouth won 5-4 on penalties) Lymington Town 1-1 VT FC VT FC 3-3 Lymington Town (Aggregate score 4-4. Lymington Town won on away goals) Final [at Christchurch] Bournemouth 1 (Phillips) Lymington Town 1 (Marwood) aet (Lymington Town won 7-6 on penalties) Match Report The match started at a rapid pace with Lymington shooting wide in the opening seconds. Play quickly moved to the other end of the field and from a right wing cross by Gary Langrish, Leigh PHILLIPS was unmarked and rose like the proverbial salmon sending his glanced header into the corner of the net to put Bournemouth 1- 0 up in the 1st minute. This woke Lymington up and for the next 10 minutes they pushed for the equaliser. The nearest they came was when a ball was driven across the Bournemouth six yard box with several Lymington forwards just missing the final touch. There was plenty of passion and tackles went in. Dave Marden the Lymington number 5 was cautioned after 15 minutes for a trip, and just five minutes later Danny Veal also of Lymington was cautioned for throwing the ball away. Poppies had two efforts from headers that would have wrapped the game up but somehow the Lymington keeper was able to deny an effort on 24 minutes from man of the match Lamin Dibba. On the half hour Matt Willsher fumbled a goal bound header from Phillips away, unfortunately for Poppies Jack Swann was unable to convert the chance from close in- and the ball was cleared. Two minutes later Carlo Tate had a shot blocked on the Bournemouth line, by Ollie Cherrett, who denied another Lymington strike with a timely stop. Half time came with Poppies still leading. The second half started with both teams attacking. Swann shot over from six yards although from a difficult angle. Play went straight up the other end and in the 56th minute a Lymington cross from the right was glanced home off the head by Steve MARWOOD although it had the benefit of bouncing in off the post following a pinball scenario in the Poppies goalmouth when nobody could get their foot on the ball. Play was even until the final 10 minutes when Lymington found some energy and twice almost scored. Extra time came and Lymington substitute Simon Young was cautioned for a very late tackle as players got tired and could probably count himself lucky it was only a yellow card. Lymington got on top in the final period of extra time and twice Darren Crook was through on goal but put both efforts wide of the far post. Poppies were beginning to tire quite badly but managed to keep going but there was no winner when full time arrived and it was down to penalties. After the initial five penalties the tie was still level at three each, both keepers saving two kicks. Sudden death penalties came and it was not until the 20th penalty kick that a winner emerged. Willsher saving the 19th kick and Lymington Town’s Tate converted thereby meaning they had won the Sydenhams League Cup 7-6 on penalties. A crowd of 448 was recorded. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 05 Chelsea had a cup winning double, with the FA Cup and League Cup both heading to Stamford Bridge, but in the League Manchester United picked up the Premiership title, a 16th title win for the Old Trafford side. In the first FA Vase final at the new Wembley, Truro City beat our own AFC Totton 3-1, the story was covered last season in one of our Newsletters. Back in the news again in June this year, Madeleine McCann disappeared in Portugal. Celebrating a golden jubilee was the TV series Sky At Night which was hosted by Sir Patrick Moore (who died in Selsey in December 2012), World Cup winner Alan Ball sadly passed away in April 2007. Sheffield indie band Arctic Monkeys stormed the music scene with “Brianstorm” penned by Alex Turner in April 2007. The early stages of the season saw The Da Vinci Code taking the plaudits on the big screen. In local county FA competitions none of our then current members collected any trophies although Gosport did collect losers’ medals in the Russell-Cotes. Former members at the time Fleet Town, were then in the Isthmian League Division 1 South alongside the likes of Maidstone United and Dover Athletic and finished 5th of 22. Their promotion chase was ended at the Semi Final stage of the play offs with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tooting & Mitcham, but the next term they found themselves in the Southern League Division 1 South and West. A runners up slot being their award come season end followed by a return to the Isthmian again for 2008/09, but that is a different story. A John Grant brace for the Shots condemning our former members to defeat, Jermaine Hamilton with a late consolation. It was a long journey for both as the Final was at the Dean Court home of AFC Bournemouth. The north Hampshire side did lift some silverware though in the shape of the Russell-Cotes Cup, courtesy of a 2-0 over League Champions Gosport Borough, the first of three on the trot for the Calthorpe Park outfit. Elsewhere Dorchester Town beat Sherborne Town 2-1 in the Dorset Senior Cup and Corsham secured the Wiltshire version with a single goal victory over Melksham Town. PREMIER DIVISION The Wessex League’s “21st Birthday” and something of a watershed season with cosmetic changes at the start and wholesale changes at the end. The cosmetic changes were the re-naming of the Divisions with One, Two and Three replaced by Premier, One and Two. The greater changes will be covered in a couple of weeks when the review of all three divisions has been completed but this was the last season of the League having three divisions. The newly named Premier Division had twenty Clubs, two fewer than the previous season, with six Clubs “going out” and four “coming in”. Winchester City, Thatcham Town and Andover had been promoted to the Southern League, Portland United had returned to the Dorset Premier League and BAT and AFC Newbury dropped down a Division because of ground grading problems. The four newcomers were Brading Town, Downton, Horndean and Ringwood Town. Looking at the completed table and comparing same with today, AFC Totton, Poole Town, Wimborne Town and Moneyfields have all progressed up the pyramid, Brading have returned to Island Football whilst VT have morphed in to Sholing who have also moved up a step. The season ended in a tight finish between Gosport Borough and AFC Totton, who had finished fourth and fifth in the previous campaign, and we will return to that later. No Club topped the one hundred goal mark – Fareham Town in eighth place were the highest scorers, and mention of Horndean who only drew one of their thirty-eight games, an unusually low figure. During the course of the season both Fareham and Alton suffered a one-point deduction for misdemeanours that are not recalled so many years on. The League Cup Final was played at Christchurch between Lymington Town and Bournemouth and finished all square at one each with Lymington winning a protracted penalty shoot-out 7-6 to take the Trophy as we have covered elsewhere in this edition. Back to the League and the tight finish between Gosport Borough and AFC Totton for the Title. Possibly the weather had been bad earlier in the season and Totton’s Vase run would also have impacted on the fixtures, but going in to the final month, April, both sides still had seven League matches to play with the relative positions showing: - Saturday, 01 August 2020 Page 6 of 21
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 05 Gosport Borough 73 points GD 44 AFC Totton 71 points GD 47 In the first half of the month Gosport had two trips to the Island, winning two one at Cowes and sharing six goals at Brading, and defeated Fareham three nil at home. Totton in turn did the double over Ringwood – two one and two nil – beat Follands five one (Mike Gosney 3) but crucially lost two one at home to Moneyfields. Gosport Borough 80 points GD 48 AFC Totton 80 points GD 53 Gosport then went in to overdrive over the next three games, winning two one at Christchurch and scoring six without reply at Horndean and at home to Downton. Totton played only two games in the same period and won them both – one nil at Lymington and three one against Sholing at Testwood Park leaving the position as follows with both Clubs just having one game to play. Gosport Borough 89 points GD 61 AFC Totton 86 points GD 57 Whether it was a quirk of the fixtures or the Fixture Secretary’s handiwork is unknown but the last fixture involved them playing each other and Totton needing to win by five clear goals which probably was never on and they had to settle for a single goal victory and second place to add to their Wembley appearance. On the individual front Michael White played in every single game for Gosport and with their goals being largely shared around, Neil Scammell was top scorer with fourteen. Two players still gracing the League today featured strongly for Totton with Ross Bottomley an ever-present and Mike Gosney notching fourteen goals to add to the seventeen and eighteen scored by Fouad Hamodu and Mark Osman respectively. Gosport were promoted to the Southern League South and West where they finished in a respectable eleventh place in their first season. Part Two next week, will have Division One, Division Two and the FA Cup and FA Vase stories for the season. WHISTLING THROUGH WESSEX The Editor’s remarkable records recently provided me with a list of all the League Cup Finals since the League’s inception writes John Gorman along with the team line ups, goal scorers and referees, which will feature as a series in later editions. The latter seldom get noticed or mentioned – unless they do something wrong in somebody’s eyes- but it is interesting to note how many of our Cup Final referees subsequently progressed up the refereeing ladder. The first Final, in 1987, was a two-legged affair between Road Sea and Horndean – the only occasion on which the Final has been played over two legs – and the second leg, at Road Sea, was refereed by PAUL SCOBLE. Paul went on to referee in the Football League and has very much remained in Football as a Director of the Hampshire FA, Referees Assessor and over the last three years, back to where he started in a manner of speaking as Finance Director of the Sydenhams League. The other leg of the Final was refereed by Bob Purkiss who has since provided yeoman service to the Wessex League. On to 1991 and Thatcham against Wimborne with LAURENCE JONES in the middle. Laurence reached the Football League Line as the apex of his refereeing career but has probably excelled that since moving into the Administration side of the game. Executive posts with AFC Bournemouth, the Hampshire FA and the Leicester and Rutland FA preceded a move to the FA and a position at the very top table. The 1995 Final between Gosport and Fleet saw Portsmouth based ROB STYLES as the man with the whistle at the start of a journey that ended at the highest level. Premiership referee and on the FIFA list and the man in charge of the 2005 FA Cup Final at Cardiff between Arsenal and Manchester United which went to extra time and penalties and, memory suggests, saw Robert Pires sent off. BERNARD BAKER was in charge of the 1995 Final involving Thatcham and Lymington and he reached the Conference middle and the Football League line. Andover based, he had a Business not too far from New Street’s ground but is now retired and not involved in Football in any way. Saturday, 01 August 2020 Page 7 of 21
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 05 Three years on to 1998 and another referee who has enjoyed a successful career in the middle in KEITH STROUD who oversaw the Aerostructures/Bemerton Heath Final. Keith was on the line at the 2003 FA Cup Final and had a spell on the Premier League list. He is now designated as a Championship Referee – in simple terms the level between the Premiership and the Football League – and while a return to the Premier middle is unlikely, he receives a fair number of appointments for the Championship Matches that “look difficult” on paper. He also boasts considerable experience on the Football Administration front. In to the twenty first Century and 2001 with JAMES LININGTON appointed to the Final between Andover and Fleet Town. James was then, and still is, based on the Isle of Wight which adds greatly to his travelling time especially following midweek appointments in the North of the Country. James and his family have always been keen supporters of the Wessex League and he too, like Keith Stroud is a Championship Referee. Whether there is another step up to the Premiership is unknown but since the return of Football following the Lockdown, he has had a couple of Fourth Official appointments at Premiership fixtures and, in another similarity to Keith, also tends to be appointed to the “difficult looking” games in the Championship. Another three-year gap and the 2004 Final between Bemerton Heath and Winchester which was refereed by WENDY TOMS. Wendy was very much a pioneer and flag bearer for female referees and is no doubt delighted at the number that have since taken up the whistle, though the FA still shy away when it comes to the final promotion steps. Wendy refereed in the Conference, was on the line in the Premiership and for the 2000 League Cup Final at Wembley. She also enjoyed involvement in the EUFA Women’s Cup and Championship and the Olympic Games before injury ended her career. CHRIS POWELL had charge of the 2006 Final and will be known to many on the Wessex League circuit. Chris graduated to the Football League line with a plum appointment of the line at a Johnstone’s Paint Cup Final at Wembley until a road accident, in which he was the innocent party, sadly ended his refereeing career. Since then he has become mentor to many aspiring referees, coaches referees generally and is in regular attendance at Wessex League matches. Coming closer to the present the more recent Cup Final Officials have been faced with a choice. When initially promoted from the Wessex League they move in to the middle in the Isthmian and Southern Leagues and if wishing to progress from there have the choice of continuing up the refereeing ladder or choosing to be an Assistant at the higher level. So far Justin Amey (who took the Final in 2007), Dean Treleaven (2008), Chris Wade (2009), Ben Cobb (2012) and Dan Berry (2013) have chosen the latter route and appear regularly on the Football League line. Dean enjoyed an hour in the limelight at AFC Bournemouth a season or so ago when he was plucked from the crowd to take over as Fourth Official when the Match Referee was injured while Ben still maintains contact with the Wessex League as Assessors Secretary. One official, Gary Parsons (2010), has stuck to refereeing and was latterly officiating in the National Conference, one step away from the Football League, last season. He was in charge for the Bournemouth Senior Cup Final between Brockenhurst and Hamworthy United at Hurn Bridge, that saw a penalty victory for the Badgers earlier this year. Only recently diagnosed with Bowel Cancer, Gary has just started a course of chemotherapy, but is targeting a return to the League in an Observers role sometime soon. A timely reminder to people out there to get any concerns checked, and I am sure you will join me in wishing him well in his battle. The above only relates to those referees who have officiated in our Cup Final but it is only fair to mention others that have moved up through the ranks via the League – Roger East, Andy Davies, Dan Cook (on the FIFA Lines List) Louis Marks, Mike Desborough and Connor Farrell with apologies to any that have been omitted. The League has also encouraged female referees over the years with such as Lucy May – who has received FIFA appointments – and Paula Wyatt, recently promoted and also making her mark in Womens football. An incentive for the promising referees we have on the League now. The game quite simply would not exist without referees, it can be a thankless task and it is nice to see that the Wessex League has played a small part in helping so many in their careers. We thank them all. Saturday, 01 August 2020 Page 8 of 21

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 05 NOTES REGARDING THE FIXTURES- Because of the late start there are more midweeks than normal which means some of the midweek fixtures involve greater travelling distances than is usual. In addition, and a point which applies principally to Division One. If your team is shown as spare, do not stand your players down unless the League release your club from a fixture. This is particularly relevant early in the season when F.A. Cup and Vase games are arranged at relatively short notice. I am sure that you will join me in thanking Roger Allen for getting these lists out so promptly. As above, please note that these are subject to change at short notice, especially given the aforementioned Cup and Vase ties for the coming season. And a further reminder, it is confirmed that the end date for the season will be 15th May 2021. LEAGUE NEWS On the pitch at time of writing just over 870 players have been registered on the Whole Game System. A bit of a surprise in that eight of our members for the coming season have yet to record any players committing, whilst on the opposite side of the coin we have three clubs with more than 50 players currently registered with their club! Whilst the Transfer Market has already been active, and not considering those players, in global terms this means just over 28 players per team are currently registered. Clubs will have been advised that Bob Purkiss has taken on the role of Covid-19 Coordinator for the League, it is requested please that all matters relating to Covid-19 be addressed to Bob for the foreseeable future. His contact details are on the website. Clubs are reminded that before they can play again, a Covid-19 Risk Assessment must be completed, sent to the league and signed off by the aforementioned Covid-19 Officer. For those teams based in Hampshire or under affiliation to the Hampshire County FA, please be aware that they will not sanction any friendly or organise a referee until it has been done. We should presume that the same rules apply for those in Dorset and Wiltshire. Whilst on this topic, the League Management team does not have anyone qualified to approve Covid-19 Sanitiser products, consequently we cannot suggest suitable Covid-19 related sanitiser and/or hygiene products. With reference to pre-season, please contact us so we can draw up a list of your games and advise of clubs from elsewhere looking for similar. AGAIN, please don’t forget the home team also has to obtain sanction from their County FA before playing AND that we still must adhere to FA and Government guidelines as regards the Covid-19 situation. At time of writing this also includes the proviso that games arranged at Step 5 and Step 6 grounds are played “BEHIND CLOSED DOORS” . So, please remember currently due to current Government regulations, no spectators are permitted at venues at Step 6 and above hosting friendlies. To the best of my knowledge those marked with an asterisk [*] fall into that category. Other Clubs where spectators are allowed will be collating details for test and trace, and spectators groups should be of no more than 6 people safely adhering to social distancing. Based on messages seen and noted, the following are Pre-season fixtures that are listed in good faith, but please note the League have no control over the proposed schedules, which are all subject to change and confirmation by the clubs. Please check nearer the time if making a special journey. DATE HOSTS . SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 05 THE NIGHT IT WAS HAYLING GOALS A Tuesday evening in October 2011 and a Premier Division game between two sides who now compete at rather differing levels. This was my first visit to Hayling United, then playing at the College Ground, and remains the only time I have actually seen a game there. I was aware of their ground grading problems – which eventually led to their leaving the league - but on a dark evening the only things I recall was that the Stand was out of kilter with the pitch and the lights perhaps could have been brighter. There also appeared to be no form of refreshments available at all. The visitors were Winchester City, who were leading the table going in to the game whilst Hayling at the time occupied bottom place so a home win was probably not on the cards – and so it proved. The Winchester side on the evening included Ryan Gosney (who had a quiet ninety minutes). Mike Byrne, Chris Mason. Leigh Mills, Jamie White and from the Island Charlie Smeeton and Alex Przespolewski. The decent Matchday Programme included in the home line-up Jack Salter-Vaile, a classy midfielder who also played for AFC Portchester, and Sean Thurgood, a doughty defender who may have played for Winchester at one time, as names of note but neither actually played on the evening. The Programme also included a page headed “The Manager’s Viewpoint” which was blank! The game was, from memory, the best of half an hour late starting because one of the Assistants was taken ill and needed medical attention with a replacement having to be found, and though the Officials names are not shown in the Programme memory, again, suggest that it was refereed, and refereed efficiently by Lucy May. Proceedings on the pitch were very one sided – there was a large difference in class between the two sides – and Winchester scored almost at will over the ninety minutes with Jamie White claiming three of the nine goals. With the late kick off and the score line it did seem harsh for one Winchester Official to complain that insufficient stoppage time was played at the end of the second half! At the end of the season Winchester finished fourteen points clear of nearest rivals Bemerton Heath and scored 138 goals, sixteen of which came in two eight nil defeats of Brading Town, whilst the home side finished eighteenth out of twenty-two and twelve points clear of bottom spot. Hayling left the Wessex League at the end of the following season but have remained in, and become a mainstay of, the Hampshire Premier League. After a spell playing elsewhere, they have returned to the College and have ambitions to also return to the higher level in the playing sense. We wish them well. With the late start and the best part of a sixty-mile journey to follow one suspects it was Wednesday before home was reached. BANKES CHARITY CUP 2020-21 The draw has been made for this competition, the details for our members looks like this. There are two (Saturday Senior) groups, winner of each group to contest the Final. Group A sees Brockenhurst, Downton and Shaftesbury. Hamworthy United are drawn in Group B, where they are joined by Cranborne and Hamworthy Recreation Reserves. Please visit their website at www.bankescup.co.uk for details on this and more! Those involved need to ensure that their application has been confirmed with the League. The Bankes Charity Cup Football Competition, based in Dorset, dates back to 1889 and is open to clubs who are affiliated to the Dorset County FA or other County Associations. Last year the organisation celebrated their 130th Anniversary were delighted to announce that £1,400 had been donated to local charities from the 2018/2019 Season. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 05 EPILEPSY RESEARCH CHARITY GOAL CHALLENGE Thanks to Chris Dunn-Veale for providing the information and story behind this campaign. How did it start? It originally started back in the 2016-2017 season when I was raising money along with a friend of mine for the “Year of The Runs” Challenge and raising money for four charities Epilepsy Research, Cystic Fibrosis, Mind and Fibromyalgia UK. A local company was asked if they would kindly donate every time our player representative based at Salisbury FC scored a goal between 1st July 2016 and 30th July 2017. (The representative was Justin Bennett who raised £258 for the challenge) During that time I was asked to become an Ambassador for Epilepsy Research and I pledged to raise a minimum of £10,000 for them and so the start of Challenge 10000 began on 1st September 2017. As the goal challenge was very popular the season before we continued it into the 2017-18 season, and our rep this time was Stu Green, who raised £260 (and had a less time for the competition to run). Again, the same company backed the challenge and they now back the three Epilepsy Reps that we have taking part. However, it was at the beginning of the 2018-19 season that the challenge really became a fund-raising event, in its own right. During the past few seasons I have personally sponsored player’s kits and my disco company at Salisbury, Laverstock & Ford and Andover Town to name but a few. A comment made by my Dad, started the ball rolling. His comment was “Why don’t you see if your sponsored players would also be interested in doing this for you”. So that was what I did and contacted all the players that I had previous sponsored or was sponsoring for that season to see if they would take part. Happy to say that that season a total of 11 football clubs agreed to take part, with 16 different players covering 6 different leagues. Clubs that took part were: Laverstock & Ford, Bemerton Heath Harlequins, Corsham Town, Melksham Town, Bishop Manor Farm, Amesbury Town, Shaftesbury, Winchester City, AFC Totton, AFC Portchester and of course Salisbury. They scored a total of 211 goals and raised just over £1220. However, what was really great was that during the season other clubs had heard about it and wanted to take part. So last season, the guys had scored 372 goals (stopped at the beginning of the UK lockdown) and raised £2211 between them. However, there are still ten collection tins to be collected and open so the amount will be higher than that shown. But we had 23 Clubs (this included those named above plus Downton, Taunton Town, Westbury United, Shrewton United, Donhead United, Sholing, Poole Town, Warminster Town, Shaftesbury Colts, Yate Town, Fareham Town and Mangotsfield United), 29 players and covered 8 different leagues. 2020-21 Season - The Biggest Challenge Yet The Challenge for this season, is the biggest one yet, with our very first juvenile team, first Ladies team and first Futsal football teams taking part. We have 33 players, from 30 clubs, from 12 different leagues. I am also happy to say, that the Wessex Football League have the highest amount of clubs taking part this year with nine clubs from both the Premier and First Division Leagues, and will have 11 players taking part (two of whom are representing me and the charity itself). It works very simply really. All the players need to do is score or keep clean sheets if the representative is a goalkeeper. I arrange for different companies (who I invoice monthly along with copies of the official results sheets taken from the appropriate results page) to sponsor their selected player. The selected player / company is chosen at random – (done like the FA Cup draws). This makes it more of a competition, as we do not know if the players will be chosen by the Manager to play, get suspended- or just where none of the players have scored or kept a clean sheet (which has happened many times over the past couple of seasons). Goal Amount The amount per goal scored is £3.50. There are times when this can change, and so will become a “Double Money Goal” day (£7 per goal) or even a “Triple Money Goal” day (£10.50). Players get a bonus if they score a hat-trick, so we will pay £14 instead of £10.50 on a “Basic Goal” Day. (These will also get doubled or tripled, if on a special payment day). Special Payment Days “Double Money” Days include: * Cup Matches * Competitor Matches (this where two Clubs taken part in the challenge meet) * Publicity Days * Charity Collection Days “Triple Money” Days include: * Semi Final Cup Matches * Cup Final Matches * Competitor Matches (this where two Clubs taken part in the challenge meet) * Publicity Days * Charity Collection Days Saturday, 01 August 2020 Page 20 of 21
