Of the 80 students that sat their HSC in 2019, 19 students achieved a Band 6/E4 result in at least one of their subjects, BLAZER FITTING DAY representing 24% of the cohort. In fact, 49 Band 6/E4 results were achieved WHY STUDY THE BIBLE? across 20 different courses. These numbers demonstrate the knowledge and HANDS OF PRAISE professionalism of our staff across all faculties as well as the mindset of the students as they move through the rigours of the HSC. LIBRARY COLLEGE FEES While we are very proud of all our HSC students, many of whom achieved CORONAVIRUS UPDATE personal bests, a few achieved accomplishments that are worthy of note. Muir McLennan was acknowledged as a ‘HSC All Rounder’ for achieving a Band 6/E4 result in 10 or more units of his HSC. If you are new to the College, I commend the Arndell Learning Framework to you. It is located in your child’s student diary. CHAPLAINCY CHAT REV JEREMY CLARK GOD’S ABUNDANT BLESSING Psalm 68:9-10 You sent abundant rain, O God, to refresh the weary land. There your people finally settled, and with a bountiful harvest, O God, you provided for your needy people. Two weeks ago I wrote about how God had sent rain which has quenched our dry land. I had no idea that he would send so much. Year 7 orientation camp this year was a real challenge and I must admit to being encouraged seeing so many students embrace the wet conditions and even enjoy them! It has been an interesting time, so much rain that many of us struggled to get to school or work last fortnight. Yet, we can’t complain if we only remember the drought we had until recently. In fact, there are still parts of the state and country that desperately need rain. May God bless them as he has us. In Psalm 8 David reflects on how God sent rain on the land his people would inherit after being rescued through the desert. The contrast shows God’s mighty power to provide blessings to his people, even in the face of strong enemies. David continues to consider the God who blesses his people with salvation, rescued from death itself. So, as we continue to marvel how refreshing the rain is for our land, surely it only paints a picture of how lush and wonderful eternal life will be when there will be no more drought and plenty of water flowing in a river through the middle of a beautiful city (Revelation 22:1-2). I hope you might have this hope for your future too, it surely is wondrous. If you have any questions about the Christian faith or chaplaincy at the College, please contact the Chaplaincy team.
ARCHBISHOP'S PREFECT COMMISSIONING SERVICE MR ALEX KOCH The Secondary School Leaders joined over 600 fellow students who attended the Archbishop’s Prefect Commissioning Service on Thursday 13 February. This is an annual service for student leaders from all Anglican schools in the Diocese of Sydney. It was the final service conducted by Archbishop Glenn Davies, who is retiring later this year. The Archbishop showed from John 13 how true leadership is fundamentally about serving others rather than serving self, challenging students with the example of Jesus: Even Jesus, the great leader, teacher and saviour of the world, was willing to wash the feet of his disciples, a job normally reserved for slaves. After the service, the Archbishop ran a Q&A session, inviting students to ask him about his life, his leadership or his faith. Arndell students commented that they appreciated the down-to-earth way in which he answered their questions, particularly the insightful question from Deniel Havenga. It was an inspiring day for the students entrusted with significant leadership positions at Arndell. YEAR 7 ORIENTATION CAMP TRYPP MCLACHLAN & BIANCA TREBLE Thursday and Friday 6th-7th of February, Year 7 went on our Orientation Camp. Even though it was pouring rain, overall it was a good time to get to know everyone in the year a little better. The first thing that we did was go kayaking, it was really fun! Though, it would have been more fun if Mr Dennis-Smither didn’t tip our Kayak over. Later in the day, after we went kayaking, we went for a quick hike and luckily, we didn’t have to hike back in the rain – we were picked up. After the hike, we did the best thing on the whole trip, we had delicious nachos for dinner. Also, that night, we had a trivia night – run by our House Captains – where all the Houses competed but unfortunately, Johnson House won. The next day, we braved the wombat hole and crawled through the dark maze for a can of Coke which no one could find… We later found out that it wasn’t even real. It was really wet in the wombat hole, but some people were even crazy enough to go in twice. Because of the rain we weren’t able to do all of the activities on the camp but we still had loads of fun. On the last day of camp most of the kids went home. But some of the students stayed back with their dads for an extra night. We had a trivia night with our dads and had dinner. All of Year 7 had lots of fun on this camp and this is all thanks to the wonderful help of the Heads of House and some other really dedicated teachers. We had a great time and made loads of memories.
JUNIOR SCHOOL LEADERS INDUCTION MR BRETT MILLS On Friday 7 February, we had the privilege of being able to acknowledge, thank and induct our Junior School Leaders for 2020. Mrs Jacobs presented the Captains, Prefects and House Captains to our Headmaster, Dr Leechman. Each took an oath to honour College rules, serve the College community and be a good example to younger students and each other, then Dr Leechman and Rev Peterson the Head of Junior School presented each Leader with their gold badge. Proud parents, grandparents, friends, teachers and students witnessed a wonderful ceremony, listened to the School Chaplain, Rev Clark, reminding us from the Bible to be servant leaders and change agents for good. Many huge smiles and happy photos ended a special celebration time together. WHY STUDY THE BIBLE? MR DAVID JENKINS One of the questions I often get asked by students as a Biblical Studies Teacher is “Why do we have Biblical Studies lessons?”. Similarly, as a parent of a student at Arndell you may also wonder why Biblical Studies is a compulsory subject for all students at Arndell from Year 7 through to Year 12. As an Anglican College, Arndell believes that the Bible is God’s Word to humanity. Within the Bible we learn that we have rejected our creator God and sought to live life our own way. As a result of our rebellion against God, we stand guilty before him. But in his great love God sent his Son to die in our place so that we can be forgiven and have an eternal relationship with him. In response to the great love God has shown us, we want every student at Arndell to: 1. Understand the Christian faith as found in the Bible which centres on the person and work of Jesus. 2. Raise and discuss questions or objections they may have to the Christian faith. 3. Have the misconceptions about Christianity corrected so they have an accurate understanding of Christianity. 4. Think through their own beliefs in an intentional and critical manner. Therefore, at Arndell students in each grade study the Bible in increasing complexity as they move from understanding the basic message and meaning of the Bible in Year 7, through to examining the Christian teaching on ethical situations and how the Christian Worldview relates to other Worldviews in Year 12. We do this in the hope that at the end of their time at Arndell our students will be able to make an informed decision for themselves on God, the Bible and the offer of life and hope through Jesus’ death and resurrection. HANDS OF PRAISE MR BRETT MILLS 5 Green are thankful for an excellent start to the year! We have been looking at a range of Bible verses featuring praise of and for our creator God. Our favourite: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14 We then designed and completed a mixed media artwork that incorporated elements of pattern, vivid colour, creative hands and of course our verses of praise. They are proudly displayed in our classroom and on our digital Portfolios, SeeSaw. We hope you enjoy this small sample. Come and look at the rest!
