4 What is Global Health Security? The Sydney Statement on Global Health Security states that “Global health security is a state of freedom from the scourge of infectious disease, irrespective of origin or source. It is achieved through the policies, programmes, and activities taken to prevent, detect, respond to, and recover from biological threats… These threats know no borders and have global consequences requiring more effective collective action.” Background The COVID-19 pandemic has unequivocally demonstrated the extraordinary negative impact of pandemic infectious disease on humanity and vividly illustrates the need for a whole-of- society approach to fighting COVID-19 while preventing the next deadly outbreak. The technology innovation ecosystem response to COVID-19 has been unparalleled, as a combination of mature companies, startups, entrepreneurs, and researchers exploring commercialization have leveraged technology to support the public health leaders and health security experts confronting COVID-19. Public private partnerships focused on COVID-19 have led to an unprecedented pace of health security innovation in vaccine development, diagnostics, therapeutics, and the many supportive technologies that enable efforts to prevent and respond to deadly infectious disease outbreaks. The TEXGHS @ SXSW2021 Demo Day will provide a forum to highlight global innovators and innovation ecosystem partners leading the fight against pandemics.
