TEMPLE AHAVAT SHALOM The Entel Benjamin Campus Endowed by Mary Lee, of blessed memory, and Eddie Deerfield September –October 2021 Elul/Cheshvan–5781 Issue No. 175 Palm Harbor, Florida Due to COVID-19 This edition is a VIRTUAL PUBLICATION ONLY In My View... Groundhog’s Day In 1993, long before the days you could watch a new movie on demand, Groundhog Day debuted in theatres. It starred Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliot. In the film, Murray portrays a cynical and egotistical television weatherman named Phil Conners, who is covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. But this is no ordinary February 2nd. Rather, Phil finds himself trapped in an endless time loop which forces him to relive February 2nd over and over again. It’s a comedy for sure, but it also shares a number of philosophical messages about self- reflection, taking stock of one’s actions and attitudes, and resolving to do better. Which is precisely what the High Holy Day season is all about. The only difference is the terminology that’s involved. This is sacred personal work called t’shuvah – returning or becoming our best self. When I think about the upcoming High Holy Day services and celebrating the New Year 5782, this is precisely the movie that comes to mind. In the last month or so, our Temple Reopening Committee met on a regular basis, weighing the pros and cons of how many people we should have in the sanctuary. At first, before the Delta variant became predominant, things were looking up. Then, week after week, we recalibrated and eventually landed exactly where we were last year. With just those individuals with service honors in attendance. This is why it feels like Groundhog’s Day. So I did what I needed to do to recalibrate. I changed my High Holy Day message for the Brotherhood’s Rosh Hashanah Gram. Now it reflects the reality of leading services while the majority of our congregational family is gathered in the comfort of their own homes. At first, I reacted a bit like Phil Conners – I was non-plussed that we would be celebrating the
In My View (cont.) New Year the exact same way. Then, of course, there was some frustration. Because I knew that many of you would be disappointed that we can’t gather together in person. Even though the overarching principle of the Reopening Committee, which includes physicians, health care professionals, lay leaders, and me is to ensure the health and safety of our entire congregational family. Now, as I write this article, I’ve come to terms with where we are. Reluctantly. Because if there’s one thing the pandemic has shown us, it’s that we can’t predict the future. I’m sure that each of us, in our own way, are struggling with the reality of living in this ongoing pandemic, in what seems like an endless feedback loop. But if Groundhog Day teaches us anything, it’s that giving up doesn’t work. Like Phil Conners the weatherman did in the film, we need to take the time to reflect on our priorities and see if any adjustments are necessary. With the goal of living our best life within the parameters we face on a daily basis. Life presents us with big changes and challenges. It’s up to us to manage the transitions between what was and what will be. At times, we may feel like we’re in the wilderness, like the Israelites did when they were wandering through the desert. But we must always look forward, hopefully with a sense of optimism. Our job is to keep an open mind and to continually invest in our personal growth. In this way, we’ll improve our lives and the lives of others, one step at a time. From my family to yours, I hope and pray that your New Year is sweet, meaningful, and full of good health. Shanah tovah, Rabbi Matthew Berger 2

President’s Remarks THOUGHTS FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK: You’ve heard it before – “Committees are the lifeblood of the synagogue.” Indeed, that’s certainly true at Temple Ahavat Shalom. I’d like to review some of the work our committees are doing. The Reopening Committee has been an important one for us. Our community thanks go to Dr. Steve Weiss (a pediatrician), Dr. David Bernstein (a geriatrician), Jorie Massarsky (a public health expert), Bill Ross (a pharmacist), Rabbi Matt (an ethicist as well as a spiritual leader), and yours truly (a retired attorney). They have Zoomed every few weeks for the past ten months or so to consider how we can balance coming together in person while still remaining safe, during the Coronavirus pandemic. This diverse group has shaken out every aspect of their work, to come up with constantly-changing plans to take advantage of scientific knowledge as it informs us. Recently, the group determined that it simply is not safe to bring large numbers of people together without risking a spread of the Delta variant, and as a result, High Holy Days services will all be virtual. As the medical science and the spread of disease continue to keep one step ahead of us, please know that this devoted group is as anxious as you are for us all to come together in person again, as soon as we can do so safely. Our Security Committee – now led by David Chazen – has brought a lot of safety devices and procedures into the temple, many of which are not normally visible. Over the past few years, Jeff Reisberg, Rick Katzeff and I have led this group at various times, and we thank everyone who has helped to strengthen the building. We have new cameras, new locks, safe rooms, a stronger perimeter and new procedures to make sure our staff and our congregation are less at-risk than ever. More will be coming. But as always, one of the keys to security is you. If you see a chink in our armor, please call David or me. The Finance Committee has kept our funding safe. When pandemic programs (such as the Paycheck Protection Plan) were announced in Washington, TAS was in line right away to secure loans to help us maintain our staff without dipping too deeply into reserve funds. The first of our two $160,000 PPP loans has been completely forgiven, and we are hopeful for the same result on the second one. Through careful planning, even with significant reductions in income during the pandemic, the generosity of those members who could afford to increase their commitments helped TAS to maintain a fairly strong financial base, despite the financial stress that others suffered. But that only happened with a lot of hard work by people like Jeff Reisberg, David Herron, and Nicole Skalka. For the first time in 18 years, the Social Action Committee is not being chaired by the now-retired Ellen Woll, whose devotion to the work of this group has been monumental. Bill Ross and Lauren Tripp Barlis stepped forward, and now co-chair this committee. The SAC will continue its work with various homeless shelters, providing special meals and holiday support, and is moving forward with its efforts to improve racial progress in North Pinellas through the United For Equity partnership with St. James AME Church in Clearwater. 6
President’s Remarks SAC is also sponsoring an exciting joint Shabbat service with Hatikvah Congregation in Kyiv, Ukraine. Due to time zone differences, we will meet at noon on October 1, 2021 in the sanctuary to share Shabbat services with them. Rabbi Matt and Rabbi Alex Dukhovny (who speaks English quite well) will jointly lead the service. Please plan to attend. (Of course, if we need to do so, we will ‘meet’ online, rather than in the sanctuary.) And I will be there about 11:30, to give some background about the rise of Progressive (Reform) Judaism in Ukraine. Under our new Bylaws, we now have a Governance and Nominating Committee, chaired by past president Rick Katzeff. This committee is charged with two separate functions: (a) developing future leadership, and systematically finding and vetting members to be elected to the Board of Directors; and (b) reviewing our Bylaws from time to time to see if changes are appropriate, given changes in the world around us. Currently, this group is considering several revisions to the new Bylaws that have been suggested by members. Even in pandemic mode, TAS and its committees offer all of us an opportunity to live our Judaism. Would you like to serve? Give me a ring at 513-314-7074, or drop me a line at edmarks1@outlook.com. 7

Sisterhood News We hope that you are all well and preparing for the High Holidays. Sisterhood is busy at work planning for a new year of programs and activities. Given the uncertain COVID situation, we are not sure whether we will be meeting in person or via Zoom. In early July we had an orientation meeting for our new and seasoned board members. Many ideas were presented and we hope to implement them in the coming months. Thank you to all who participated in our very successful Rosh Hashanah honey fundraiser. This has become an event that we look forward to each year. Although our monthly Chai Mitzvah classes have continued throughout the summer, we will skip the September meeting. The group will continue meeting virtually on the third Thursday of the month starting in October. Please RSVP to Loren Goldman at clmegold@gmail.com The Holidays in the Kitchen Committee has planned a virtual Challah Bake for September 1. We know all those who participate will have a wonderful raisin challah for the holidays. Do not miss the exciting program our Education Committee is planning via Zoom on October 14@ 7PM. Joy Katzen-Guthrie will present “Remarkable Refuge: The Jews of Shanghai”. Experience this enlightening audio-visual discussion of the extraordinary multicultural Jewish community of Shanghai—from its mid-19th century Sephardi beginnings—to the refuge it provided some 10,000 Jews of Russia and the Pale of Settlement in the early 20th century—to the approximately 20,000 European Jews who were harbored within its borders during the reign of Nazi terror—to the modern community of orthodox to progressive Jews thriving there today. Joy’s travels as a heritage tour director throughout China and her experiences with China's Jewish history and its people bring this discussion to life. You can register for this free program on tasshevents@gmail.com. Hopefully you have received our flyer asking you to join Sisterhood.
