The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin—Marcy Rand leading the discussion
                Monday, September 21 at 2 p.m.
We’re all incredibly busy. We always seem to have a million and one things on our to-do list.
Choosing to feel happier and have a greater sense of well-being can take just a little effort.

months she spent test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research and lessons
from popular culture about how to be happier. We will read The Happiness Project and meet
to discuss it and share some of the lessons we have found beneficial. We are not alone in our

The Civil War: Revolt of the Planters with Mark Albertson
                       8 Mondays, September 14 - November 2, 10:30 a.m. - noon, $80

Known as the War Between the States or the War Between the North and
the South, the conflict which tore the Republic asunder less than a hundred
years after its founding is known popularly as . . . the Civil War.

In one way or another, the above descriptions are true. But there is another
which captures the political, economic and social aspects of the conflict in a
fashion decidedly more accurate; and that is, the Revolt of the Planters.
Such a description lends more to the Jeffersonian versus the Hamiltonian
agendas for the future of America. The former enlists the agrarian agenda, while the latter showcases the
desire to industrialize backed by a sound system of finance. And while the latter boasts of industrial
production, commerce and banking, the former caters to the landed interests; a contradiction waged by the
Southern Aristocracy versus burgeoning Northern Capitalism.

Art Lover’s Guide to New York with the Zuckermans
                                       Monday, November 2 at 1 p.m.

New York City is one of the world’s great meccas for Art. Several art movements began
here, many artists have chosen to make the City their home, and artists from all over the
world want to exhibit their art here in one of our great museums or numerous galleries.
In this presentation you will learn such things as: how did the Ashcan School gets its
name, why Diego Rivera’s masterpiece at Rockefeller Center got destroyed, who was the
first supermodel who posed nude for many sculptors, how art is displayed on Harlem
storefronts, why Salvador Dali had a tantrum over one of his creations, and many other
interesting things. If you always wanted to be an artist or just love art, you will enjoy
this presentation.

as sharing cards, tiles or other game pieces. There are ways to play these games online, in some cases online

Intimate Sketches of New York City
                               Monday, October 19 at 2 p.m.
Vernon Howe Bailey was one of the most successful and prolific illustrators of his time. He
is probably best known for his 381 “intimate sketches” of buildings and street scenes in
New York City which were published in The Sun in 1934 and 1935. The 1930’s were a time
of tremendous growth and change in NYC and, while “many architectural gems featured in
the series have since been destroyed,” they are preserved forever in Bailey’s sketches.

Tucker Murphy gave us copies of Bailey’s sketches which Mary Miller transferred to slides. Our Zoom
program will juxtapose 24 of those drawings against current and past photos of the same places.

New to Medicare? - Free REMOTE Medicare Counseling and More

Dick Neville is a Medicare counselor trained by CHOICES, the State of Connecticut program which recruits
and trains volunteers to provide Medicare education in their communities. If you are turning 65, he can
guide you through enrolling in Medicare and choosing a Medicare supplemental plan and Part D prescription
drug plan and/or considering a Medicare Advantage Plan. He can also help with other issues with or ques-
tions about Medicare. These sessions are free of charge to New Canaan residents and Town employees.

Medicare’s Part D Annual Enrollment Period
October 15 – December 7, by remote appointment only
Online registration for appointments starts October 1
This is your once-a-year chance to reevaluate and perhaps change your prescription drug plan for
2021. Your prescription needs may have changed and, as we have learned in the past, the prescription drug
companies take this opportunity to make significant changes to their rules, formularies and pricing. The plan
that was best for you this year might not be best for you next year. The only way to know is to use
Medicare’s Prescription Drug Plan Finder located at Medicare.gov on the internet. Our counselors will be
happy to run this program for you. Just call 203-594-3620 for further information.
Last year our Counselors met with 531 New Canaan residents: 185 changed drug plans (35%) saving a
total of $185,368.00!
