System
Record 2017
Technology Transfer System is a new vision that was born
in 2017 within the Politecnico di Torino as a response
to the matured awareness of the complexity of the techno-
logy transfer processes and the importance of promoting
the results of research. These results are obtained in a con-
text that links the University with several players on the
outside, in a phase of deep changes that involve society,
companies and research.
Technology Transfer System comprises different inter-
dependent areas linked to the technology transfer process.
Innovation, knowledge transfer, transparency and
openness toward the territory are just a few of the keywords
that feature in this new vision. It is a complex system
that bases its value on the importance of a multidisciplinary

and sharing approach to generate a tangible impact on
society. It is an exchange of skills, a knowledge system to
support people, the territory and companies in a dynamic
and innovative way.

shown below. Where possible, the relative trend over time
is highlighted in relation to the decisions and strategies
that have been adopted. The result of the trends appears
in the graphs, elaborated with horizontal lines reported
year by year to indicate their dynamism.Disclosures
Over the last few years, there has been a marked increase in the disclosure presented at the TTO, a sign
of an ever-increasing pro-activeness of the same and of the university’s growing attention to technology
transfer activities.

In the last few years, the share of patents filed in co-ownership with other institutions has increased,
sign, on the one hand, of a greater opening of the Politecnico di Torino towards external institutions,
on the other, of an ever increasing demand from the external bodies to collaborate with the University
to exploit their skills.

Over the last few years, the trend in deposits has not followed that of inventions, a sign of the implementa-
tion of a selectivity policy related to the technologies to be patented, which has allowed patents to be
deposited exclusively for inventions with greater technical and commercial potential.

The cost trend shows that the Politecnico di Torino is increasingly focusing on the patent protection of its
inventions, especially through the deposit of foreign applications, which tend to be much more expensive
than the filing of national applications.

The spin-off founding process that has been structured by the Politecnico di Torino has become more
selective over the years. The moment of the foundation of a spin-off is thus determined only when
the skills of the team, technology and the value proposition are confirmed and ready to meet investors
and the market.

at a precise moment, they were represented with circular

The current IPR portfolio managed by the Politecnico is the result of the strategies that determine both
the filing of new patents, presenting greater possibilities of industrial application and the maintenance
of those already deposited.

Approximately half of the Politecnico di Torino patents were deposited, mainly as a priority, in Italy,
a quarter was deposited through international PCT and EPO procedures, and finally the last quarter
was deposited in specific countries, among which the deposit in the United States stands out. These num-
bers point out the strategy adopted by the TTO which envisages a priority deposit in Italy, followed,
if the patent proves to have technical and commercial potential, from a PCT extension, followed in turn
by extensions in the single states of greater commercial interest for the invention.

for granting patents are very long – from 4 to 5 years – this figure must take into account the fact that
